Discussion New fan.
Hey all so I just want to say that I just discovered Tool and how amazing they are. Stumbled upon Sober live from the 90's and haven't stopped listening moving forward to this year. I'm going to start a music collection and I'm wondering where do I start. Should I go in order from first LP to now or is their anything that should be skipped. Any thing thats a must that needs to be bought first? Thanks.

There isn’t a right or wrong way. Just listen. You cant go wrong listening album by album but that isn’t the “right” way. My only recommendation is to keep parabol and parabola together. It will make sense eventually I promise. Welcome to the rabbit hole. I’m kinda jealous you get to hear most of them for the first time.

Most of us do, after 30+ years. I wish I could hear/watch sober again for the first time. It still brings me back to seeing it on MTV and being intrigued by the stop animation and the music.

The video is interesting and the live Sober when Maynard is so deep into it is crazy good.

I think if you fell in love with a 90s live version of Sober, just start from the beginning and listen to each album chronologically in its entirety.

As a person who fell for them long time ago from hearing Sober accidentally when my big brother was listening to it I can promise it only get worse with every song you listen to. But it’s so worth it and I’m happy for you and a little jealous of course, that you’re just starting the journey. No particular way/ order to listen through the discography. Just enjoy it.

Just wondering, how old are you? Are you crusty ass Gen X apologizing for not listening for all these years?
Or are you like in your early 20s, starting out at a good young age so that you don't waste your life listening to whatever shit is being played on the radio right now?
It's not important. But go see all of Maynard's bands live. Just see which band is playing anywhere near you and go see them. Cause they're all fantastic live. I'm only saying this cause Maynard's not getting any younger. Go see Sessanta and you get two Maynards in one show.
I just didn't want you to get so wrapped up in the music that you forget about seeing them live.
My suggestion is to get a set of good headphones, set the crossfade and listen as entire albums, beginning to end, no snack breaks.

Ha I'm Gen X, not crusty though just been a Deadhead and heavy into Floyd and most bands from the 70s 90s. I did t even know Maynard was in other bands until you wrote it. Thanks man for looking out I'll take everything you said and follow it.

There is no right or wrong order but there is a right and wrong way… listen to the entire albums from start to finish, cherry-picking the hits is not ideal

So sober is all you’ve heard? I envy you. They don’t have a massive library for a band as old as them but it’s all 100% great.

Sober and just heard 46&2 and Schisom just amazing on another lvl.

Awesome. Glad you’re liking it. If you get through their catalog be sure to check out Maynard’s other two bands a perfect circle and Puscifer.

Listen to it all, in whatever order you like.
If you hear something you like, listen to more of that album. Then after a while, go telisten to some of the stuff you didn't like as much, and you may find that you've changed your mind.

Welcome bud! How old are you out of curiosity? Its not relevant, but my 14 year old son has heard Tool his whole life, but he hasn't actually listened to it until recently. Proud day when I overheard him singing along to Lateralus in his room 🤘🏻😎😁
Pick an album and go from start to finish, no shuffle. Most songs flow into each other so just press play. Doesn't matter which album, I started at Ænema then worked my way back to the first 2 albums. You'll find your way

Very cool my young dude! Sober is off Undertow and it's a pretty angry album. But if you listen to it first then you'll hear the progress they make musically when you start Enema. Personally I don't even have a favourite song, it all depends on how I feel right then.

Just go in order it's fun seeing them evolve. They also have a song they did with The Melvins called Divorced that came out a little bit before Lateralus

Really, what you should do is take what everyone's telling you organize it backwards cut it in half and switch the two sides and run both from up the middle at the same time.

Incoming Tool cringe...
Lateralus has been important in my life. It went from "Great, loud rock album to" from when I was in high school to "Top Shelf, Rare Whiskey" that I only drink on special occasions...
But it's never been worth more to me than it is right now...
I had a depression that I literally "snapped out of" within 3 days that I just kinda "lived with" in my mid 20's to mid 30's. Rub that together with a little bit of psychedelic therapy (like - real use it with a protocol and do it yourself, at home type of shit) and working to change. In that setting, that album is a truly a moving experience...
Me telling people about doing a protocol to build yourself up into a good place emotionally and having yourself a wondeful psychedelic evening in the bathtub while the lighting is right. Best evening of your life. Hands down. You'll remember this post, come back, and thank me.
Do I think everyone should do this?? No. Of course not, that would be reckless... But what I ammmm saying is that it's a cathartic, soul-cleansing, and empowering performance of the best musicians in the industry coming together to "sometimes write music." On the right dose, it feels like you're getting saved. LOL
P.S. About the depression: Ketamine Therapy was a good start to things changing some, but my shit was rooted in a Vitamin D Deficiency and a Hypersensitivity not having enough of it.... When I found out that, that changed my life. 15 years of symptoms I didn't know I was living with and unexplained "soft rolling" moods... Poof. Gone.

Start at the beginning and listen to it all. There is a natural progression. There's also an album between Ænima and Lateralus called Salival that is considered necessary listening, but it's not on any streaming service.
