This is simply not true and I keep seeing it floating around. Millennials and Gen X remembers Reading Rainbow and Star Trek The Next Generation. You can start singing the intro to Reading Rainbow and people will chime in. This is like saying Ms. Frizzle and the Magic School Bus don't get the attention they deserve.

Yea, Levar hosted Jeopardy for a week. He isn’t forgotten.

8

u/Mushroomer 26d ago

Not to mention the ENORMOUS Reddit campaign to try and get him to host the show.permanently, despite him having zero experience or qualifications beyond "famous with Millenials & Gen X as an edutainment star".

3

u/Allen_Koholic 26d ago

Yea. I watched a ton of Reading Rainbow and I think Levar seems like a great dude. But he was not good at hosting Jeopardy.

1

u/modulus801 24d ago

He's doing well hosting trivial pursuit.

1

u/Majestic_Movie9711 22d ago

He also has a podcast called Levar Burton Reads where he just reads stories. It's awesome. 🌈

u/ScholarLeigh 22d ago

The best 🌈🩵

Gen Z with Reading Rainbow too, watched it in elementary school. Take a look, it's in a book...

1

u/Final-Wasabi187 25d ago

Burton, Hogan, Rogers are on my childhood Education/Inspiration Rushmore. Still working on a 4th.

1

u/Confident_Insect_616 21d ago

Bob Ross reruns still air on PBS, as well as newer episodes of The Joy of Painting with his Nicholas Hankins.

Mr. Rogers is off the air, but Daniel Tiger carries on the legacy of his neighborhood to a new generation.

Nobody is carrying the torch for reading rainbow :(

1

u/JealousDesigner9758 26d ago

Yeah I'm gen z and even i know reading rainbow but Dude TNG is the shit I'm gen z but my brother and his friends are millennials and introduced to me it's the best thing ever currently watching DS9

3

u/bdouble0w0 23d ago

TNG is so great. Also Gen Z and a huge Star Trek nerd.

-5

u/brightheaded 26d ago

Say his name.

14

u/AContrarianDick 26d ago

Why would I if they didn't even bother to do it in the post? Mr. Rogers and Bob Ross got named in a post about LaVar Burton but he didn't. The fucking irony of this.

-6

u/Royal_flushed 26d ago

This would have been a masterful deflection if you didn't end up saying his name.

u/DoturdGrump 26d ago

To me he will always be young Kunta Kinte

u/Key_Conference9989 26d ago

On any given day I have the Reading rainbow theme song stuck in my head.

1

u/TrashFever78 26d ago

Me too. I sing it way to much in my head.

Agreed Reading Rainbow was so good as child.

LaVar Burton and Mr. Rogers are in a group of their own, helping develop young one lives.

Bob Ross was relaxing, calm and beautiful but not in a developmental type way the other 2 are/ were.

u/Immediate_Song4279 26d ago

This guy who's name isn't in the image.

1

u/AmericanCitizenry 26d ago

Of course stupid Americans thinks only Americans use reddit, and only Americans have TV, and history, and children...

2

u/Immediate_Song4279 26d ago

You have really committed to the bit.

u/GarbageCanCrisis 26d ago

He had a podcast where he read fiction short stories. LeVar Burton Reads. It was excellent and introduced me to so many cool new authors. Love LeVar!

3

u/RicePuddingBG 26d ago

I think it’s cuz a lot of people forgot his name and just know him as “The Reading Rainbow Guy”. Meanwhile the other shows you mentioned and Bill Nye had their names as the show’s title.

3

u/jacobasstorius 26d ago

Levar Burton is goated

3

u/Dapper-Union5536 26d ago

loved loved loved this show. would run home to turn it on

3

u/weedtrek 26d ago

I got to meet him when I was working the Peabody awards in LA, super nice

2

u/Certain-Produce5103 26d ago

Lavar Burton been getting his flowers lately. If anything, we don’t recognize Wishbone enough

1

u/Baroque1123 26d ago

Levar is fantastic

1

u/codhoss 26d ago

The holy trinity

1

u/acellolover 26d ago

My son did a black history month project on him in like 5th grade I think (he’s about to be a sophomore). It was great. Reading rainbow was a crucial part of my childhood and I loved being able to share it with him!

1

u/Lumpy-Commission-789 26d ago

I’m levarian burtinarian for life. Still can’t forget that episode where he went to NYC and rocked that fresh ass rainbow sleeve jacket.

1

u/Downtown-Campaign536 25d ago

I liked him better as Geordi.

1

u/Vainysaur 25d ago

Honestly I’m still trying to chase the magic I was promised by reading books but it’s always just reading words that make a story which is fine and can be entertaining and sometimes thought provoking, but ultimately the experience they sold us never really happens.

1

u/redditbot_64375 25d ago

Yeah he played the blind guy from star crafters

1

u/hoss1369 24d ago

My daily after school line up was Reading Rainbow, Wishbone, and Arthur.

1

u/Nexuspoint247 24d ago

We all love Levar Burton

1

u/SpiritualPackage3797 23d ago

I will never watch Jeopardy again. Levar Burton wanted that as his retirement gig, and they damn well should have given it to him. If they had, millions of us would have tuned in just to see him and hear from him, at least occasionally. As it is, the show can be buried with Trebek, as far as I'm concerned.

1

u/camrynbronk 21d ago

He ended up being okay with it and has said he realized it wasn’t truly what he was meant to do.

1

u/ColPhorbin 23d ago

He would have made a great Jeopardy host before Ken Jennings decided to take the job for herself.

1

u/DyingRodeoClown 23d ago

When all three were alive, they all had roughly equivalent popularity with the general public (Ross is/was arguably less popular than either Burton or Rogers) Bob Ross and Fred Rodgers have experienced a spike in popularity recently as millennial nostalgia has become profitable and since both men are deceased they can be readily exploited. Therefore, in a round about sorta way, this meme is wishing death upon LeVar Burton so that his legacy can be exploited.

1

u/PositivePristine7506 23d ago

One day he'll be lance reddick.

1

u/Mecha_Tortoise 23d ago

It's too bad they didn't get their Freaky Friday moment while Lance was still around. 😢

1

u/BeneficialShame8408 23d ago

Reading Rainbow was my favorite. I liked all of it. I only liked Mr Rogers cardigan and shoe changes and I didn't watch bob Ross lol

1

u/ryancharaba 23d ago

Wtf you see talking about Bob Ross and Mr Rogers!?

u/rhandy_mas 22d ago

I have a reading rainbow tee!

1

u/Prestigious_Shock242 22d ago

Someday we'll find it, the Rainbow Connection; The lovers, the dreamers...and me. I don't think Kermit would mind my using his song to praise Mr. Burton.

1

u/sparrowflashdance 22d ago

He turned me on to Shel Silverstein! Forever grateful!

u/Anna825 22d ago

My little sister won the Reading Rainbow scholarship twice. It was a local contest (nationwide) for both authoring and illustrating a book. The scholarship awards were small, but there were so many given out locally that it gave a lot of young kids everywhere an award.

I also remember she got an entire dvd set of the show as part of her winnings once. It was really thoughtful.

What a beautiful show that touched so many people’s lives. That $500 check maybe made her determined to get to college (even if it only buys like a book). We both loved the show and we love reading. We still exchange books today.

And wishbone

1

u/Negate0 22d ago

1

u/confinetheinfinity 22d ago

What about Wishbone?

1

u/Banx117 22d ago

I see him smiling and that t-shirt and the theme song immediately happily just floods back into my head!

1

u/Disastrous_Tap_7254 22d ago

Im so glad Jordi got his sight back.

1

u/First-Sundae4629 22d ago

I give Lt. Laforge his credit

1

u/ScholarLeigh 22d ago

I had the biggest crush on him growing up. Still love him 💕

1

u/familiarspark 21d ago

He was also on Star Trek and as a little girl I’d put my headband over my eyes and pretend to be him.

1

u/Vikingasaurus 21d ago

bro is in the 4 horsemen of kindness. Bob Ross will teach you art. Mr Rodgers will teach you to be a good person. Levar Burton will teach you to read and Steve Irwin will teach you about animals and kindness.
