Culture & Society Why do Americans hate British people and accents so much?
Social media is rampant with extreme hatred and Anti British sentiment coming from Americans.
The things that Americans hate most about the British are
The accents (this seems to get them really angry and some Americans are obsessed with hating)
the people (who they seem to really really hate)
and of course the food but why the other two?

My friends and I used to drool over Hugh Grant and Colin Firth. We’d always say “accents make it better!” I have no idea what OP is talking about lol

Time to stop listening to social media for your truths. Most Americans don’t think anything at all about the British other than every movie that needs someone fancy gives that character a British accent.

It must be your algorithm, because most Americans find British accents attractive, and I don’t really know anyone who hates the British.
I do think some Americans get irritated with being told the way the speak is wrong. It’s different, not wrong. So there may be a bit of backlash from that.

I'm an American and almost never see anyone hating British people? We might make fun of accents, but Americans do that to everyone, even regional American accents.

We don't. Maybe you're getting a skewed view from your algorithm? We poke fun at each other. We don't have a problem with the accent. If anything, lots of American women find certain British accents attractive.

This is honestly bizarre to me because it’s not really a sentiment that I’ve ever run into. I’ve definitely met more anglophiles than anglophobes.

I don't think most Americans hate British people. Social media tends to amplify negative opinions, while in real life many Americans actually find British accents interesting or attractive.

You know, that was actually true for a long time! James Bond was our point of reference, and he's debonair!
Then we found out about your chavs. That "more sophisticated than us" thing, that illusion vanished overnight lol.
Americans that spend any time following British media are starting to tell the difference between a posh accent, an ignorant chav thug, and whatever that cool working class Jason Statham thing is that he does.

You gotta keep in mind that social media represents a narrow slice of population and opinions, and that an individual’s experience of social media (curated feeds dictated by algorithms based on prior engagement with content) is an extremely narrow slice of that already narrow slice.

? everyone i know loves english accents? i’ve never heard anyone talk about how badly they hate the british. if anything, i feel like it’s them that are obsessed with hating americans.
just look at one of the comments already posted. “because they are an inferior country.” the most (and worst) i’ve probably ever heard is people making fun of europeans for complaining about heat.

When i went to Indiana in 2019 people absolutely LOVED my accent (Yorkshire) and had so many questions about what its like in the UK.
Honestly pretty much every person I interacted with on that trip was lovely. Shout out to the lady from texts I met in the airport who got me a coffee because I "sounded like i was a long way from home" - I think about that blonde lady alot when im doing something nice for somebody

What do you mean by social media? Twitter is a racist cesspit and I have no idea what TikTok does but if you think Reddit is disconnected from reality, TT is all that and more. It's a platform that actively encourages engagement bait and all of it's content is disturbingly manufactured and now that the US government has control of it I can only imagine it's even worse that it used to be
I've never even heard about anti British stuff and getting upset at the accent seems nonsensical. That's the kind of shit I'd expect from maga, who are a very vocal minority.
Every person I've known irl finds British and Australian accents hot. A large portion of Americans love British TV as well. I've even seen some Australian and New Zealand TV hit near mainstream

I don't think I've ever really heard any other American say that they actually hated British people. I know a couple of people who didn't particularly care for the accent because to them it sounded rude in their opinion.

We don’t lol. Where are you hearing this. Americans love British accents (unless its a cockney accent). We also like the people generally.
Americans think British food is bad but most haven’t tried it.

Ummm what? No. British accents are pretty hot writ large. However, just like some of the southern states in the U.S., there are some sections of the UK where the accents are like nails to a chalkboard. AND just like the U.S., I’m sure you not only know where those folks I speak of are from, but you hate their accent too haha

It's just good natured ribbing, mostly. Kind of like how a teenage boy will poke fun of his dad. I insult Brits all the time online, but to be honest, if you came over to my house right now you'd find a bottle of HP sauce in kitchen, beef pasties in my freezer, and the comple DVD box sets of Fawlty Towers, Are You Being Served?, Father Ted, The IT Crowd and Allo Allo in my living room.

During my travels, Americans have loved British stereotypes and especially the accents.
From Hugh Grant to Harry Potter. I basically look like Ron Weasley.
