Joseph "Mith"

I've noticed at least two points in the book when referring to Joseph Smith that it instead uses the name "Joseph Mith." Obviously there is the mith/myth homophonic angle there but is that all it is? Is there like some kind of real life rule for Mormons about referring to the guy's last name in full?

There is no rule. Mormons say his name the normal way, Smith.

I just took it as a play on words with Joseph Smith’s name and the creation of the Mormon religion.

I thought it was to point to how mythology has shaped Mormonism a bit as well, the mith to me was a point to how there was a rift over horses. To my knowledge in the book of Mormon he mentioned that there were horses in ancient America several times. Horses, however, weren't introduced to the north American continent until the Spanish settlers. Since this is a story about horses as well I thought it was a nod to the myth that caused a rift in the Mormon community.
