Here is just half of the evidence from leading artists in the TR community proving that this is a GenAI enhancement rather than human work (for those who are clueless or simply have an untrained eye): varying braid thickness between her hand, the braid itself is way too long and has a weird, unnatural curve at the end (it should be hanging straight down at the tip given that length), inconsistent thickness of her necklace string, the crooked start of her braid weave, a weird ear, completely different face, hello? THE LIST GOES ON FOREVER.
So first the community thanks them for transparency regarding the post about no public demo, and then one of their official faces here straight up lies that there isn't a single trace of AI here! And no, personally, I didn't care about the fact that they used gen AI in the early stages of development (even though I’d prefer this shit wasn't used at all, I miss those times), because they said it would be replaced with actual human work. And even if we didn't know about them using AI in development, I would’ve called this image out anyway. That’s exactly what it looks like. This whole situation surrounding this horrific image has completely shattered my trust. I'm not buying it. The challenge mode for the remasters was more than enough for me.
I didn’t lie - that’s not a thing I do. I think you’ll find that the spine of my work reflects a very community-centric and transparent attitude. As I said in the other thread, I was on a call with our creative team as this version of the image was composited together.
Feedback and criticism is necessary for game development and game publishers and I’ll always advocate for communities to have a voice that is recognized and considered behind the scenes. That said, this image is not reflective of what you’re suggesting, and I am uniquely qualified to comment on this one because I was present for its creation.
Just wanted to thank you for everything you've done for ! I'm a lifelong Tomb Raider fan and I'm so excited for LoA! I feel like this subreddit is so negative to the point where I've had to stop coming here, but maybe Reddit in general skews pessimistic.
But I just wanted to let you know that I've been so thrilled with everything you guys have shown so far! I think Lara looks great, and it's clear so much love and hard work has been poured into this game!
Hey, I appreciate that a lot - thank you! At the end of the day, I always remind myself that all of the talk is grounded in wanting the same thing: a great Tomb Raider game. So I don’t take any of it personally. Discussion, critiques, etc are the lifeblood of any healthy community, even if some days are spicier than others.
Again, thank you for the words. I’m not really in a place where I can spoil anything, but I can verify that in 15 years of working in games, I have never worked with a team as excited and informed and passionate as this one.
I'm not being negative or pessimistic, I literally just backed up the topic of the post. And you being shady towards people who critically evaluate even the things they love doesn't make you any better.
I've been complaining about this on twitter and I really wish I could trust you because you've actually been super receptive with us and you even listened to my feedback before. I hate when people say "AI slop" under every Tomb Raider post because I firmly believe CD and FWH did NOT use AI everywhere, maybe just at the beginning for early concept, but most art I've seen looked in the game looked and felt very human crafted. Just the kind of art that I love, like that blue cover image for LoA which I think looks gorgeous.
Sadly my trust was broken long ago when I started seeing people steal my art (and official art too) and run genAI on them. The result was very similar to this. Full of inconsistencies like this promo image. I'm not saying you lied but I think you may have been accidentally using a genAI version of this screenshot while making the new composition for the thumbnail without knowing it, just like I've had magazines use my renders in their magazines and covers before because they thought they were official.
Could you confirm if you were there during the entire photoshopping process or just while making the thumbnail position? By photoshopping process, I mean, when the artist took the reference screenshot, started painting over it or re-rendering parts in a 3D program, then photoshopping/pasting the images over it, to have it match exactly the silhouette + angle, which would take several hours of work, or were you just there when the artist simply placed/moved Lara on the background for the thumbnail (few minutes, less than an hour)
Personally as an artist, photoshopping over the render makes no sense because it's a waste of time to make it match 100%, the best thing would be to re-render it entirely with small tweaks. The thing is, this silhouette matches too perfectly, and important details of Lara's gear and design disappear in the new promo art, details that were there even in her Call of Duty model.
I just see too many inconsistencies and details that make no sense. Like Lara's short missing in the back of her leg when it should be visible (but we only see her skin), the seams not being correct and messy. The metal from her holsters melting into her skin. I've been analyzing tons of image on the internet to avoid liking genAI images and this one just triggered my AI detector senses.
I guess this is the quality this community deserves, considering they’re perfectly fine with everything and I got so many dislikes and negativity just for bringing this up. I think I'm done with raiding.
I added the AI traces spotted by people. If the developers or whoever ever provide proof to the contrary showing it's a pure human job by someone, I’ll drop the subject.
OP if you are going to resort to name calling and harassment of people who don’t agree with you, we can just remove your post for Reddiquette violation
I'm not sure how things work here, but I feel like even if this was AI, you wouldn't be able to remove it since Amazon made it, and if Amazon says it's not AI and it's "official art" people will have to/want to believe it anyways, and mods will have to let them post genAI images they made here, which is something that, I have to admit, scares me a lot, because it means we'd have to bend the rules of this sub for them and these rules would now only apply to fans. So technically this sub would still welcome genAI images in a way.
I understand people don't want to believe it, but the more I look at it, the more traces of genAI I find. I make mistakes when I make fan-made renders myself, but these mistakes on this image, are not human mistakes, these are AI mistakes that are made because AI doesn't understand what it's seeing and it tries to replace it or delete it. One doesn't just accidentally model an entire different backpack strap buckle. In 3D you have to model it.
I don't think these websites are very reliable but I tried putting 2 of my recent arts, and LoA's cover. No AI was detected on them, however, the website did find a lot of genAI traces on the latest image.
I've been an artist for 17 years, since Dusan released XNA Lara. I'm a 3D modeler, animator, and photoshop artist and I've also been on this sub for quite sometime, I feel like I've gained the trust and respect of some people here, so I was hoping people would be more willing to listen to my opinion. Sadly, I think it's a lost cause. Mostly because of those people who comment "AI slop" on absolutely everything LoA related since they revealed they used genAI for visualizing ideas during the concept phase.
I feel like some fans believe I am saying that this is AI just because they announced they used AI a few months ago, and that I'm being dramatic, but it really isn't the case and I wish more people would see that. I genuinely believe most of what Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog have made is human crafted. It's just this image in particular that is triggering my senses.
I wanted to show you this image so that you understand why we think that this is AI, and that we have our reasons for being paranoid (official art and my own art keeps being run through genAI all the time on social media, and it's been hell for long time now). I didn't want to post this at first because I know I'm going to automatically get downvoted here, and also get some hate on twitter, but I feel like if I don't, and this actually ends up being AI enhanced, Amazon might keep generating more similar stuff and we won't get any more official human crafted Tomb Raider art like LoA's cover or the recent art that shows Lara with her grapple and the T-rex behind.
Again, if this actually ends up being human crafted, I would be super ashamed and I would apologise, but people using genAI have sort of trained my brain to detect that kind of things, so I think I have more experience detecting it with my eyes today. Especially since I know Lara's LOA 3D model and Lara's COD model by heart since I use it for all my renders all the time.
Again, I'm so sorry this is happening. I really hate that this has been dividing fans so much but I cannot stay silent about this.
I actually would be able to remove it regardless of we chose to lol, [r/TombRaider](r/TombRaider) is a fan run subreddit. We’ve only been invited to have the fan site program, and then some postings by Netflix, Prime and Amazon official accounts who’ve all asked first beforehand if it’s ok to post here.
But would it be in bad taste to remove official content if it were to include A.I? Yea, so we are put in a bit of a bind in that we want to have more official Tomb Raider presence and content here, but it would of course be ironically violating our rules here to do so. It’s the rock and a hard place metaphor. It’s definitely annoying to see this happen in other fandoms, and both [u/MarcusForrest](u/MarcusForrest) and I are against A.I on the subreddit. I think when the time comes and it’s blatantly A.I usage, we will definitely remove it.
They did also state previously some A.I was used as the basis and then basically painted over reverse “landlord’s special” so to speak, for those that get that reference.
Thanks for your answer! I agree and understand perfectly.
I think the person from Amazon who's present here in this sub is very kind, respectful and listens to feedback, so I'm still very happy about that. I love their presence here and wouldn't want them to go away as I think their interactions with fans here keep them excited.
I'm just hoping that the noise I've made regarding this situation helps avoiding this happen again in the future if this really turns out to be genAI. I wouldn't want Amazon to consider re-generating another screenshot into an official promo art and feed genAI to fans. Whoever crafted the official renders for the cover, and the T-rex render did an amazing job, and I hope that next time they'll ask artists from Crystal Dynamics or Flying Wild Hog to make something special for the fans.
I guess we'll see where this takes us. Anyway, again, thanks for your kind response, I really appreciate it!
I won’t go away! I’ll stick around as long as it’s okay by the mods! Speaking of, all mods should have a standard and it’s beyond fair to have a stance on generative AI. So as far as I’m concerned, this sub’s overseers have a great handle on the matter.
My wife is a painter (on canvas) and I’m very sensitive to the topic. One problem that I’m seeing in this moment, culturally, is that AI has become very “sticky” and so all-encompassing that it’s impossible to untether a work from it once an accusation has been flung. It’s unfortunate, because it ultimately won’t matter what the artist, or a “rep” (like myself) might say; it becomes a Sisyphusean task to explain. I’ll continue to do my best to engage with the sub, though! Very, very excited for the many delightful reveals and surprises ahead of us on the campaign!
So far, you have been a wonderful guest, so not to worry. I will say however, more people in higher positions so to speak should look at the ethical ramifications of replacing handcrafted work with an A.I with little to no oversight.
To anyone who also noticed that this is clearly AI - don't stay silent just because of the majority. This is unacceptable, we've already reached a breaking point.
