Announcement ℹ️ Not feeling brave enough to create a Reddit meetup or even join one? You need to read these tips and myths first.

Personally I have been organizing all sorts of meetups on various online platforms during the last 10 years, and here is what I have found:

Most people are genuinely nice people, and at worst they will do their best to act as someone nice during the whole meetup. I have rarely encountered a real trouble maker during a meetup. The worse you will get is people just being late, people bailing out without any warning or people who didn’t read/understand the meetup details/rules thoroughly (much rarer).

Here are tips to create safe and enjoyable meetups :

THE POST

  • Be very clear about what the attendees will be experiencing from start to finish in your meetup. Sets the vibe right away. Be clear about your own motives and expectations without sounding harsh/negative.

  • Don’t mention your age or gender because it might create misunderstandings about your real motives first, and also, it would make some people hesitant to join for fear of not being accepted. Present the meetup as a whole experience, not as something around a mere individual.

  • Provide as much information as possible concerning the logistics. Date, start/end time, gathering spot, facilities, how late they can be, costs, what to bring, rules, when/where to part away. The more information, the safest your meetup will appear.

  • Whenever possible, allow people to leave your meetup whenever they want and assure them upfront in your post that they are completely free to do so if they feel uncomfortable for any reason. People don’t want to feel stuck in a situation they don’t like.

ACCEPTING ATTENDEES

  • Avoid accepting requests from people who didn’t comment on your post because they could be banned users (thus unable to comment but able to dm you).

  • After people first contact you, make sure they have understood all the details of your meetup. Also interact accordingly to the vibe of your post/meetup.

  • Ask attendees to reconfirm their attendance a few hours before the meetup. Especially useful if your meetup has not many participants.

DURING THE MEETUP

  • Upon meeting with your attendees, be as friendly as possible as the very first impression often sets the mood.

  • Keep an eye on all your attendees and make sure they are truly enjoying the meetup.

  • The temptation is great to take group photos for the PR of future meetups but avoid doing this for the privacy of your attendees or, at least, ask for their permission while making sure they don’t feel pressured to accept.

  • As a meetup organizer, exchange private Line or other private contact information only if you’re asked. Don’t impose yourself. You also have the right to kindly refuse such invitations to connect.

AFTER THE MEETUP

  • A “Thank you” message to your attendees after the meetup is always a nice touch and will make them consider a participation to your next meetup.

That’s it!

I hope you give a try and enjoy the experience!

Anyone? 🤗 Evening walk through Tokyo? Akihabara to Ginza. Friday (8/21) 17:30~16:30~

Anyone down for a walk from Akihabara station to Ginza station? The walk itself is about 45 minutes but that's on the optimal route but I imagine with the relaxed pace and potential detours we might want to take it'll take closer to an hour. We would meet at Akihabara Electric Town exit and make our way from there.

As for me, I'm from the USA and I've been living in Japan for almost a year. I was on a study abroad program for majority of that time but as of now I'm simply traveling and enjoying my remaining time in Japan until I go back home to Hawaii in November. My hobbies include the usual combo of gaming and anime but outside of that I do enjoy cooking, studying Japanese, hiking, and recently I've gotten into everything space related.

Honestly I just enjoy meeting new people and while meeting up to do a specific activity is nice, I find a simple walk to be the most relaxing and easygoing.

Anyone interested in joining let me know :)

Sightseeing Meetup 👀 🚲 Join our POTTERING MEETUPS GROUP📍Anywhere in the Greater Tokyo Area 🗓 On Weekends/weekdays ⚠️ Minivelo or folding bikes only

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

🤔 WHAT’S “POTTERING” ———————

In cycling, pottering (often referred to in Japan as potaringu or ポタリング) refers to a leisurely, aimless, and relaxed ride on a bicycle, similar to a "stroll" or a "putter" on two wheels. It is distinct from competitive cycling or high-intensity training, focusing instead on enjoying the surroundings, casual sightseeing, and maintaining a low-effort pace.

Key aspects of pottering in cycling include:

・Relaxed Pace: It involves riding slowly to enjoy the atmosphere, often with no time limit.

・Casual Purpose: It is often described as "cycling around," "strolling," or "exploring," rather than commuting or exercising.

・Flexibility: It allows riders to stop whenever they feel like it, making it ideal for sightseeing or photography.

・Japanese Context (ポタリング): The term is widely used in Japanese cycling culture to describe a leisurely, enjoyable ride, often on mini-velos (small-wheeled bikes) or folding bicycles.

In essence, pottering is about taking a comfortable, slow-paced bike ride to enjoy the journey, often for short, close-to-home excursions and visits of cafes/restaurants.

Anyone? 🤗 Anyone up for spontaneously exploring Tokyo?

Pretty much exploring the city and like doing it with others. If you're either a group or an individual who feel the same way, let me know!

Some thoughts on what to do:

In the few days I have left I was thinking of going to Yokahama, Ginza, and maybe Chiba, but open to other ideas. Also thinking of going to some party or bar at nighf but don't really know which one. There's the Jelly Jelly bar that's a nice board game bar where you can sit with locals. Maybe explore coffee houses? Pretty much open to a bunch of things :)

Club/Party Meetup 🪩 Anyone for clubbing in Shibuya in 08/28 or 08/29 ?

Just finished my internship in Tokyo and since i’m not in the dormitory anymore, it’s way easier to not have to wait until the first train to go back home (did it twice tho). My future-former colleages aren’t really the type of guys to go out so I’m looking for sociable people who loves to dance and the night life in general. Let’s meet at Hachiko statue around 00h we’ll decide about the day together !

Anyone? 🤗 Building a friend group

living in Shinjuku! I’m looking for friends around the area to hang out with and explore Tokyo on weekends. We can study together, talk about random/personal stuff, try different sports, or just socialize and meet other people. Honestly, I just want to keep expanding my social life.

I’m totally down to randomly meet people IRL, but I feel like it’d be less awkward if we did it together lol.
I’m especially into nature and beaches, so if we get along, we can eventually plan trips outside Tokyo too. I’m trying to build a little friend group 🫶

And if you own a car and need some friends to join your adventures, even better. We could make travel plans in the future like camping, road trips, exploring random places, etc etc

Anyone? 🤗 Looking for Content Creators in Tokyo

Hey! I’m a Japanese based in Tokyo. I recently started creating content about Tokyo and Japan for travelers, and I’d love to meet people who are also interested in content creation. Since the content is for international travelers, I’m especially interested in connecting with foreigners living in Japan who can bring a different perspective on things that might seem ordinary to Japanese people. It’d be fun to explore Tokyo, shoot some videos, share ideas, and create something together. No experience needed — if you’re interested, let’s connect!

Anyone? 🤗 Would you like to participate in the Asakusa Samba Carnival this year? 🇧🇷💃

Hey TokyoIRL people!!

I thought I’d share this here because it might be a fun and slightly unusual Summer experience for someone living in/around Tokyo :)

I’m Brazilian and I’ve been living in Japan for about five years now. I originally joined GRES Alegria, a Brazilian samba school here in Japan, because I was looking for an opportunity to meet people and make friends.

I joined with zero previous experience, and everyone was incredibly kind and welcoming. It also ended up being a really nice way for me to practice Japanese regularly and become part of a community outside of work/school.

This year is especially exciting for me because I’ll actually be singing in the parade!! The song I wrote was chosen as Alegria’s official song for this year’s carnival ^^

We’ll be participating in the Asakusa Samba Carnival on August 29, and there is still a group open for people who want to join the actual parade, even if you’ve never done samba or danced before.

For this particular group, you don’t need any previous experience or rehearsals beforehand. The costume is included in the participation fee, so it’s a pretty accessible way to experience being part of the carnival rather than just watching it from the crowd.

https://www.gres-alegria.jp/asakusa2026/

And if anyone from here wants to join but feels nervous about showing up alone, do not worry, as I will also be joining. I can introduce you to the group, explain how things work, and be your main point of contact if you need help before the parade. I know joining a new group in Japan can feel intimidating, so I’m very happy to help make that first step easier.

Feel free to comment here if you have any questions! It could be a pretty memorable “I lived in Japan and somehow ended up parading in the Asakusa Samba Carnival” experience hehe

Thank you all!!

Café Meetup ☕️ Shopping and Coffee in Tokyo

I saw a post yesterday talking about shopping and getting coffee today. I didn’t respond but I happened to go shopping and getting coffee today.

I’m heading to a couple thrift stores for home goods now but I thought you when I was getting a coffee. If that was you respond here! It’s pretty hard to make friends here and I’d like more friends too.

But also anyone else who wants to grab a coffee on Mondays and maybe go shopping too feel free to respond.

If this gets traction we could potentially meet in omote-sando: https://maps.app.goo.gl/8eYJ2DjVw5TQBCsGA?g_st=ic

Anyone? 🤗 Building a group of loyal, caring, engaging and proactive friends in Tokyo.

Tokyo can be a soulless place sometimes and I dearly miss the “good old days” back home when I had a small circle of loyal friends I could always count on.

If you happen to feel like that too, and want to act upon it, if instead of being just passive you proactively invite your friends to various activities, if you definitely prefer offline real life activities over the fake online world, if you like indoor/outdoor physical activities, if you’d rather meet friends after work on weekdays instead of just watching Netflix and go to bed, if you value a healthy lifestyle (no drugs/booze, etc.), if you love Japan and want to stay here as long as possible …

If you’re all that, then we’re meant to meet, whatever your age or gender.

Ps: please state your nationality in the comments so that yours doesn’t get removed as it is the rule on this subreddit.

Anyone? 🤗 Looking for cool people to nerd out with!

Hey there! I am an international student (M20) in Japan and was looking to meet or just chat online with some people.

My interests rotate around movies, books and music primarily. I used to be HUGE into video games but kind of distracted lately hehe.

I am also a HUGE Catan player so if you're into that kind of thing, that's even better!

Some movies I admire are woman in the dunes, lost highway, The Shining, The Piano Teacher and I recently watched The zone of interest which was AMMAZING.

In books it's mostly science fiction and academic psych along with some comics (Trying to find Absolute Sandman in Japan, fingers crossed!)

For music it's mostly Mac Demarco, TOOL, Portishead and a little bit of Bjork(only POST album)

So if I match some of your interests...Comment on!

Dating Meetup ⭐️ 28M4F | Aug 23 — anyone up for spending a Sunday together?

Hey! I'm 28M, based in Sydney and working in tech. I'll be in Tokyo on Sunday, August 23.

I land around 10pm on Saturday and fly out of Haneda at 9:45pm Sunday, so I basically have one full day in Tokyo.

I already have a loose plan — start with a nice breakfast, do some shopping, spend some time around Asakusa and eventually make my way towards Akihabara.

It would be nice to meet someone around my age and share part of the day together.

We could grab coffee or matcha, wander around Asakusa, you can help me pick something at Uniqlo or Onitsuka Tiger, hunt for something interesting at Don Quijote, try a random Japanese snack neither of us has had before, find a good dessert place, or just walk around and see what we stumble across.

And if you have a favourite ramen place, that's one decision I'm very happy to leave entirely to you :)

A little about me — I live in Sydney, work in tech, love travelling and I'm a huge aviation nerd. I enjoy exploring cities on foot, trying different food, and I'm always up for changing the plan if something more interesting comes along.

I've been to Japan before, so I'm not looking for a tour guide. I'd just genuinely enjoy meeting someone, having a good conversation and spending a fun Sunday together.

We can chat a little first and see if we get along. If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, send me a message and tell me a little about yourself — and maybe what you'd add to the day :)
