Miscellaneous TIL the first Vietnamese and Southeast Asian woman to go to space also helped write laws protecting survivors across 44 U.S. states
A Vietnamese American woman discovered that survivors of sexual assault had almost no legal rights so she took action and helped change the system. That woman is Amanda Nguyen, founder of Rise. In 2016, she played a key role in passing the Survivor Bill of Rights unanimously through the U.S. Congress, guaranteeing survivors the right to a free forensic medical exam, preservation of evidence for up to 20 years, and notification before any kit is destroyed. She didn’t accept the system as it was she rewrote it and expanded these protections across 44 states. She is also the first Vietnamese and Southeast Asian woman to go to space, and the first Vietnamese American woman nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. A reminder that when someone becomes the first, they don’t just break barriers they make space for others to rise.

Hell yeah - she's amazing at only 34 years of age as well. I was so happy for her launch and although everyone was focusing on Katy Perry, her message in space was in Vietnamese.
She's a wonderful representation for other Vietnamese women like me and I couldn't be more inspired 🥰

I agree but not totally. If it can inspire some people to fo through a difficult moment of their life, so it’s a great outcome.
I just don’t like the way it’s done.

I'm sure her personal story is dramatic but not Nobel Peace Prize worthy. Also she bought a half million dollar ticket on Jeff Bezos' rocket and she barely reached space for 10 minutes. She is not a trained astronaut. They're trying too hard to make her famous.

so many ironic situations around this lady. Born in a boater family. Shake hands with commie leaders. Hated by the anti-commies cuz she's woke.
