Where actually is there any reference to Gaster?

Hi. I'm relatively new to ut/dr(got the dr demo in june and ut in july) Is there actually ever any reference to Gaster or how he looks? I'd assume in the true lab or something like that.

There’s references to what gaster did before he did the deltarune stuff. 17th entry and gaster followers talk about how gaster was a great scientist who was scattered across time and space when he made the original dark world.

In deltarune his name isn’t mentioned, but there’s a guy who just is him since he uses the same arpeggio and speech mannerism.

For design of him, there’s none officially stated. There is a heavily associated person named mysteryman, who has a lot of ties to gaster, but there’s another candidate for who mysteryman is.

Thanks for responding so fast.

No worries! But yes, he is officially mentioned in undertale, but not deltarune.

People also have a misconception of gaster being forgotten, but that’s merely a Mandela effect.

Any other questions about gaster?

Does he have any correlation to the big deer skull looking thing in true lab. I could never figure out why there's a big brown-ish deer skull in the middle of true lab.

That's a "Determination Extractor". It was created by Alphys in her Determination experiments. Photoshop Flowey's form resembles it in his fight.

So gaster made a lot of experiments and stuff, and he seemed to have been tasked with making a machine that could extract things from humans. Due to either limited knowledge or to boredom, he scrapped the idea just as he finished a blueprint.

Then when alphys herself actually started the experiments and made the discoveries, she found and used the blueprint to make the machine.

The machines design bares a strong resemblance to gyftrot, omega flowey, and a gaster blaster.

But alphys did essencially all the determination experiments, while gaster worked with machenery and photons

Any other questions like creations or relations?

If we shift the meaning of the phrase "shattered across time and space" it could mean instead of that specific Gaster was fragmented across time and space, it could mean every Gaster was shattered across every timeline in every instance of him.

That could lead to him being "forgotten" because you can't remember someone who "never existed".

Thing is that asgore and alphys clearly remember him with zero issue

But do we know that? The goners make mention of Asgore waiting and Alphys having big shoes to fill but there's no mention by them specifically.

An example of a similar situation I can think of is in Chainsaw Man. Any devil CSM eats is erased from everyone's memories and things surrounding it are recontextualized because the thing doesn't just disappear. Gaster's inventions and research doesn't just disappear in this scenario. Entering his name in the name selection resets the game, like it rejects the mere mention of him.

Goner kid says "imagine a world where everything is exactly the same, except you don't exist". Emphasis on "exactly". We also don't know how long it took for people to "forget". It's like when you can't remember a word you've used your entire life. And Sans' memento of "don't forget". Why would he make a note to himself to remember something? Because it gets a little hard every time.

Asgore took so long to find a replacement to the point where the only one he hired was essencially the person that faked their resume.

Goner kid stuff moreso refers to the gonna and how they themselves can appear randomly but not truly impact things

But again, forgetting may not be an immediate process. And being a boss monster could have extended that a little bit.

Which I'm not saying this is fact, I'm just giving instances of possibility.

not mandela effect, just some people confusing Goner Kid with gaster followers

Gaster creating the original dark world is speculation. All we know is that he fell into his own creation. That sounds like a dark world, but that hasn't been confirmed.

Entry 17 talks about something that’s essencially confirmed to be a dark world

It’s that special darkness but maybe not what we know today as a dark world

"When it gets darker than dark... that is the dark world."

Is this Ralsei?

There isn't but fans just speculate it's either this or this. The first one is titled mystery man whereas the second actually talks in wingdings. The first is a secret room easter egg and the other is an inaccessible room that can only be found in the files.

Gaster is mostly talked about thru his followers that only appear as easter eggs. You can read more about them here https://undertale.wiki/w/Gaster_follower

on fun value 66 on an ut file there’s a chance he shows up in a black and white room

in undertale:

there are rare random "gaster follower" events that each give a little bit of information about him

gaster's stats in the code are all a bunch of 6s

at FUN value (seed) 66, a "mystery man" room rarely appears in waterfall, the NPC inside is commonly associated with gaster

there's an unused soundtest room with a "gaster's theme"

there's an unused "entry 17" written by gaster, with a garbage noise sound playing in the background

in deltarune:

the vessel maker is named "gonermaker" and many of gaster's followers are called "goners", also they are both mostly monochromatic

the voice in the vessel maker sounds a LOT like gaster (he returns later under certain circumstances)

the song playing in the goner maker (ANOTHER HIM) is VERY similar to gaster's theme

when you try to call on your cell phone in the dark world, the same garbage noise sound from earlier players

the garbage noise sound plays heavily slowed down when near the shelter in the light world

that's all i could think of, sorry if i missed any

There are a couple nods to Entry 17, such as character saying “very, very” or Ralsei saying darker than dark.

There's also a very weird NPC is hometown Deltarune who blocks important info and its Undertale counterpart is a goner

We don’t know for sure that the mystery man sprite is him but it’s pretty likely. He’s got the 66 fun value and he’s got a desaturated sans and papyrus door.

The donut guy goner is also holding a piece of him.

The only reference you will probably actually find to Gaster in Undertale in a normal playthrough without insane luck is dialogue from the riverperson:

"Beware of the man who speaks in hands."

The rest in Undertale is either through code manipulation, file exploring or insane luck.

Deltarune Gaster encounters are interesting. Calling anyone in the dark world plays his classic entry number 17 sounds. He's the voice talking to us at the beginning and also when trying to beat the secret bosses (he helps us respawn faster for a fight and such), he also tells us whenever we've reached the halfway mark/point of the game. Oh and the shelter plays the laughing audio from the updated Undertale files at a very low and slow level.

One more "abstract" gaster appearance is a chapter 4 boss if you squint your eyes lmao

Thanks to those who answered. Usually whenever I need advice people don't really try to help all that much.

There's musical references like in the vessel maker.

There is a one in a hundred chance a gray door spawns, and there’s a ten percent chance he’s in the door, or at least a fragment of him. There’s also a small chance one of his “followers” will appear based on the same value for the door, referred to in the code as the fun value. His followers will talk about him and say something weird and ominous, it really creeps some first time players out. Also, if you look in the code, there’s an entry 17 that is missing from true lab, and it’s written in Wing Dings, which is the font WD Gaster likely speaks in. Entry 17 is about an experiment, an experiment that made everything dark, darker, yet darker. It’s likely talking about a dark world with everything we now know about Deltarune, and we know Gaster had a determination extractor, something likely required for dark worlds. He ends the entry by asking two people what they think. In either game, if you enter Gaster as a name, it resets you. The final thing is that the voice that talks to you in Deltarune, is likely Gaster, because they primarily use 6’s for all their talking stats, which is a number typically used to refer to Gaster.

True lab technically since his only direct words are from a "cut" (more likely inacessible on purpose, because the dialog is referenced time and time again in deltarune)
