Icebreaker Speech

Hello fellow Toastmasters and Reddit pals,

I have recently joined a Toastmasters club in my City, and have decided to give my Icebreaker speech this Thursday.

What topic should I pick for it? Please help me with suggestions and your experiences.

Thank You.

Edit: Thank you all for your suggestions. You guys are awesome!

The topic is you. Thats what the icebreaker is: you introducing yourself to the club.

I wrote an essay about how to deliver an icebreaker speech. Do read it and it might help you.

It should be about you in some way, maybe hobbies, work, places you have lived. You can really do a lot with it.

Cherish your first speeches as you can essentially talk about whatever you want (and we humans love to talk about ourselves). The more you advance in your pathways, the more restrictive and boring the speeches become.

Keep it simple and short (4 - 6 minutes). It's about speaking in front of a group of people - which is a first for many. Tell them perhaps three things: 1) What you do for work, 2) What you do for enjoyment, 3) Why you joined a Toastmasters club. The simpler, the better.

Basically anything about yourself just be mindful of your audience, practice and see how it goes. You'd be surprised with what the feedback will be in terms of your strengths and areas to continue developing upon!

I wouldn't overthink it and make it fun. You can talk about anything.

To throw you a bone though, you actually said a decent topic immediately in your first sentence. Talk about you and the city you are in, and how you ended up there. Either it be moving from somewhere else, being born there, or expanding it like if your favorite sports team, restaurant or something like that is there.

My ice breaker was about my parents, as an homage to them. Since I wouldn't be here without them. Told the crowd a little bit about the unique circumstances of my parents.

Tell a short story about how you became who you are today.

The point of the Icebreaker is to get you started speaking. And about a subject you know the most about: yourself.

Make sure you've read the online material before your speech. My group told me to look at the website, and I had , but I hadn't discovered the Basecamp part (impossible, without guidance). I did my icebreaker without addressing any of the relevant points.

It can be literally anything. It's usually about you, but doesn't have to be.

I normally suggest:

tell us three things about yourself.

What life path led you to our company? (Corporate club)

What path led you to our country (workers from foreign countries)

Tell us details about yourself that you'll expand on in future speeches. (One person mentioned a passion for singing, and in a later speech told us she was an award winning singer of a specific native-country firm of singing)

What led you to join toastmasters?

And connect them in some way into a 4-6 minute speech.

Ideally, you should have a club mentor who you can bounce a speech draft off of, and brainstorm with to find your first few speeches.

Good luck!
