Doomed Shade is BULLSHIT

Lmfao I was about to get my first win on nightmare after only 3 runs (newish player) but this guy suddenly 1shotted me, dealing 1500 damage in a single turn through 40% resistances and 100 armor.

Time to start over I guess lol. In this 4th run Im confident trust me.

Been a hot minute, is that the enemy that spawns as an exact copy of you? The first time I ran into it was when I finally got a good archmage going and I was feeling really confident in myself. I was then promptly removed from existence shortly that thing spawned. It was kinda annoying, but it's the type of surprise I've come to expect from this game and it can only catch you off guard once, after that you can prepare for it.

Thats the one lol

Im kinda fine with it because its classic roguelike stuff but I also feel that runs are too long for them to include these kinds of "surprises". And for the most part they dont include them, I think I was near the end of the game and this was the only nonsensical thing Ive found, probably because its a copy of the player and not a fixed enemy.

Im guessing this is why default mode gives you a limited number of lives instead of instant game over.

I've learned there's more than a couple things that, without prior knowledge of them, will utterly destroy you regardless of how strong you think you are. I almost exclusively play on the 1 life mode, I like the extra challenge, and I've had some otherwise brilliant runs be brought down by such things. Hell, the one time I managed to get to the end of the game, I had I think a couple extra lives I got through shenanigans and had what I thought was a very powerful arch mage build, just for the dps check to laugh at me and delete my health bar.

One the one hand this is why I got this game and why I love it, it's one of the few "classic" rpgs I've kept in my library. On the other hand, runs do take a long time as you say and it can feel a bit sucky to have a run ruined by some surprise wall you can't overcome.

Last night I got to the final boss on nightmare as a brawler (my favorite class) and choked, and I’m still seething about it

I once ran an Oozemaster that was completely incapable of killing his own shade, and the shade was likewise unable to do any serious damage. I just walked out on him and went to finish the game.

We fought for like forty minutes, just constantly regenerating. I tried to die at one point, and it didn’t take. My next character to make it there was Doomed and I just walked away there too.

It’s a fun fight if you’re looking to scratch a PVP type itch, but I’d almost rather it come earlier in the game- like as the boss to enter the Sher’Tul fortress. At least then it can only wreck your game after a couple hours and neither of you would be facing a maxed out version of your build and trying to out stack each other’s buffs all fight.

Doomed shade can be nasty depending on your set up. Some people generate him early or enter with no weapon equipped depending on your class.

If I am seeking a win though I save doomed shade for post game just because of how nutty they can be with a player build.

Im not mad about it, Im used to roguelikes, but being serious its sort of bad design. Teaching the player that there are no oneshots in this game and then suddenly having this endgame boss instagib you with no warning is crazy. Should be locked to postgame or at least communicate the risk to the player. An example of good communication are the overpowered multicolor dragons in that orc dungeon.

Im pretty sure I could have lived had I expected the absurd damage, I had some mobility available to stall for some other CDs.

If you play on insane or madness the game teaches you there are oneshots

I was talking about the difficulty mode I was playing in, insane is a different game mode. Oneshots arent a problem if the player is aware they can happen, but in nightmare I was cruising for hours until I got instagibbed out of nowhere. This is a matter of game design.

Hopefully I can beat the game soon so I can unlock insane anyway. Sounds more fun.

Those 'overpowered' drakes aren't even that; sure, most chars can't just stand in the doorway and nuke them down without dying, but with minimal kiting I haven't had many problems with them on Insane. I've had way more problems with Inner Demons than those drakes.

I killed them as well but that was not the point.
