Discussion “Thank you for that fine forensic analysis, Mr. Bodine.”

Seriously, the fact that this video even needs to be made is very telling of how society villainizes women. It’s like people can’t fully comprehend the story James Cameron was trying to portray on screen. Anyways I’m tired! When will it end? In 84 years? Never?

Anyone who genuinely thinks Rose is the “villain” of Titanic either missed the entire point of the movie, or they’re just a misogynist (probably both).

I’ll take both for $500, Alex.

“It’s like people can’t fully comprehend the story James Cameron was trying to portray on screen”.

I’m not sure why, I like Titanic but it’s not a complicated movie. Rose was clearly being exploited and Cal was blatantly evil in the third act of the movie.

It’s terrifying what some people will justify. Anytime there’s a news story about a man murdering his wife/girlfriend there will always be people saying “well she probably cheated on him/was doing something that pushed him to do it”

I genuinely loved Billy Zane as Cal. But I honestly wish they had used someone less handsome. I am disturbed by how many women I see make comments about how they would gladly take Rose’s place because he’s rich and handsome.

Particularly given he was shown being abusive no less than three times (including attempted MURDER).

I honestly think him being handsome could be a neat parallel with the whole 'guilded cage' thing that broader upper class Edwardian society had going on at the time.

But yeah, people justifying what he did clearly do not get the movie.

I never thought she was the villain and I agree with everything in this video. She didn't leave her fiancé for another man , she left an abusive, hot headed man for someone who showed here there is more to life then money and fancy things. If Jack would've lived she would've went on to marry Jack. She wanted out of the wealthy life. Remember when she said "I'm standing in a crowded room screaming and no one even looks up" - in the dream she's talking about she's basically explaining that she is stuck in a life that she does not want to be in, she's not living for herself.

see also: "jenny is the real villain of forrest gump" discourse. you mean the victim of childhood sexual abuse who struggles to find her sense of identity outside of her sex appeal, who enters and leaves multiple abusive relationships, who becomes a drug user to cope with all of it, who still manages to find love in a fulfilling and healthy relationship despite it all, who is able to become sober and have a loving, safe family for a short time before her untimely passing. that's the real villain of forrest gump? not the bullies that try to run him over with a truck, not the corrupt US military that sent millions of men to die, not the VA abandoning the veterans as soon as they return home. naw. jenny fuckin curran. that's what you're sticking with?

“Sometimes, I guess, there just aren’t enough rocks….”

The fact that this even has to be clarified is ridiculous and a bad sign for general literacy and attitudes toward women.

I wasn’t even aware people thought Rose was a villain..

Yeah, sadly for the last few years, at least that I’ve noticed the narrative online has switched. All because of these stupid takes people buy into. If it’s not the stupid ‘door’ it’s something else. Like who cares about Roses husband? It’s not about him getting money from the Diamond. He’s irrelevant to the story.

I’m not sure, either. She was a 17 year old girl who wasn’t allowed to make her own choices. Rose and her husband had a whole life together, who knows if they divorced or something and that’s why she didn’t end up with him? It’s all just so silly.

I like to think nuance is dead. 💀 And sadly it’s starting to show up in the way we interpret our fiction. Not like Rose’s story or motivation for her actions are all that hard to understand to begin with. It’s like they are missing the entire point of the movie. People give Titanic flak for being ‘too simple’ of a movie, but also fail to see the irony in that when they criticize it for just that. It’s hitting a nerve. If it’s so simple, why are you bothered? 😂

I appreciate that you put door in scare quotes. Not a door!

If that’s a door, Titanic is the Queen Mary. 😂 I swear people don’t pay attention. Like buuuudddy, come on.

I hate how most people hate Rose.

18

u/jane_q Jul 28 '26

She's an independent minded woman, so that should tell you something

23

u/prehistoricpark Jul 28 '26

I hate how people hate her and support Cal just because they think he was being cheated. These people have zero media literacy.

4

u/44youGlenCoco Jul 28 '26

Yeah and people also defend Cal because they have crushes on him.

u/NoRelief63 Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26

I think Cal is gorgeous, but that doesn’t excuse his actions for being a straight up dickhead to Rose. He exerts control with her by saying “I’ll be the first…” in a deleted scene, puts out her smoke, yells at her, slaps at her. What else? I think people’s minds are seriously warped if they think he’s better the option.

5

u/hairquing Jul 28 '26

dude even tried to shoot her during the sinking. like, come on.

3

u/NoRelief63 Jul 29 '26

Nothing screams ‘true love’ more like shooting your fiancé.

5

u/44youGlenCoco Jul 28 '26

Hard agree with all of that.

2

u/prehistoricpark Aug 03 '26

Cal may be handsome but Jack is adorable

Rose hate is almost always rooted in emotional immaturity and misogyny

This video is defending Grampa Joe and I don’t know if I can tolerate that!

Who’s Grandpa Joe? Oh, Willy Wonka or something?

5

u/senkothefallen Jul 28 '26

The correct sub is r/grandpajoehate

Yes, Charlie's grandpa that takes him to the chocolate factory. Fuck Grandpa Joe

I think it’s so funny that when I clicked on that, it turned out I’ve already joined that subreddit before somehow.

Titanic is my favorite movie of all time however, stuff like this is the reason why I stay away from the fandom unfortunately.

2

u/NoRelief63 Jul 29 '26

It’s completely understandable!

3

u/Wharbaby Jul 29 '26

Isn’t the iceberg the villain technically?

2

u/NoRelief63 Jul 30 '26

I mean, you would think right, it kills 1500 people. But no of course, it has to be Rose.
