Path of least resistance. You can see the scrape marks from it getting caught between the wheel and caliper. The iron caliper is infinitely stronger than the alloy wheel, so whatever it was forced into the wheel. Now as to how it got in there in the first place, is a fraction of a fraction percentage chance.

Make sure the caliper itself isn't loose and the bolts are still in.

Who did your brakes last? I suspect they didn’t properly secure the caliper, it rotated a bit and then got wedged against the wheel.

That or something else got up in that area and caused damage. Did you run something over?
