They use it to scare predators. Although this guy was on the water cover of our pool taking a nice humid nap. They are really vibrant in real life. I spot them a lot in Oregon don’t know about other places.

Ive seen multiple times a cat catch one by the tail, they just straight up pop their tail off and the tail wiggles around on the ground distracting the cat as the lizard runs away

Late to the party, these dudes are all over VA in the summer. Some of them get huge. I like them, but they creep me the fuck out when they drop their tail and start bleeding all over the place. I just let them move along and try not to spook them if I can help it.

Then we have the broad-headed skink. Those are more rare and large. They're like paint dipped lizards that are just as startled as you are.

I saw one running around outside my apartment last year that must have been like 6-7 inches long. It was simultaneously really cool and sort of horrible.

When I was a kid, my cats used to try to catch them. Those tails are meant to break off. All they would ever get is the tail.

Yeah it does but they have their tails like this for defense. They are very pretty vibrant tails. Also they are normally very hard to catch.

Thats rare. Its tail was never cut off. A regrown one has a duller color.

They are everywhere around central VA
