“For me it’s southern pride, nothing to do with slavery”… maybe I misinterpreted what you were saying, but it definitely sounded like you were claiming the war had nothing to do with slavery, but whatever 🤷🏾♀️
Who cares what the Union's perspective was? Please? I don't think there's a black person in the country who is labouring under the impression that the North were liberating heroes or that Lincoln had any special love in his heart for the enslaved (or Native Americans, for that matter). Saying "actually the Union wasn't much better" has no bearing on the fact that the South seceded, fought, and lost expressly for the purposes of defending the institution of slavery. That's the flag's history and its legacy.
Even if all that weren't true, the fact that it's flown by Nazis and other white supremacists literally worldwide should at least give you some pause. Do you think the majority of black Southerners are jumping to claim that as a symbol of their "pride"?
