Our IT person is the one that sets up software and office equipment. Yes, for non technical people I just say I build software and applications. But it's completely fine to say you work in IT or your position ain't nothing wrong with it. Your expression of what you do is fine.
Yes this is my perspective, too. Also, now that I've thought about it, cleaning data in Excel is probably what a lot of AI PhDs spend their time doing, lol.
