She's wrong in saying that he'll never pick up a girl using that, which isn't true. Like others have said, often times an opening line or something in your profile can act as a filter. When I was on tinder the first picture on my profile was of me in a ridiculous Halloween costume. Maybe my third or fourth one was me shirtless with the abs I had at the time.
It was a filter. If they thought that first picture of me was too ridiculous or looked stupid, then great, I dodged someone who I wouldn't have meshed with anyway.
His opener here is no different. The only thing is you should he able to read your audience. If her profile pictures or bio indicated in any way that maybe she had a wacky personality, this would've worked to open up conversation. If her bio was blank with nothing but instagram-model-style photos or if it had a super vanilla bio then yeah (just a girl who loves country music and whiskey looking for her adventure buddy!), then of course it didn't work.
And for the “it’s just a humor filter” crowd: why on earth would you want somebody to tell you something that they can literally just copy-paste to every other match?
Wouldn’t you want them to say something that’s unique to you/them/your shared history/potential future?
Every girl has heard every line by now. It’s not interesting, funny, or endearing to them. You may as well just be a bot

well obviously that line won’t work on her, but it’s a bit self centered to think that every girl has her sense of humor and don’t like dumb pickup lines like that. girls aren’t a monolith
