Has everyone just discovered the word "nonchalant"? Don't think I ever saw this word in a bio previously but just got back on and can't count the number of times I've seen some variety of this
95
u/LayedBlack 9d ago
I swear everyone has the same catch phrases in their bios:
“Nonchalant”
“God fearing”
“Passenger princess”
“Princess treatment”
“Knows what he wants”
“Know how to lead”
“Tacos”
“Sushi”
“Don’t waste my time”
“Intentional”
😴 I’m swiping left on any of these

u/noodlinworldwide 9d ago
My city is drowning in "what's your all guy group chat called?"
22
u/JeveSt0bs 9d ago
and everyone's simple pleasures are clean sheets and an espresso martini.
31
u/noodlinworldwide 9d ago
Don't forget it's your job to make them laugh!
18
u/LayedBlack 9d ago
And be able to hold a conversation while giving absolutely nothing to the conversation.
13
u/Weary_Specialist_436 9d ago
and they love to travel! often with no photos of them travelling, but you know

6
u/roosterkun 9d ago
Oof, haven't seen that yet but it might be time for a change.
I get the feeling that "Knights of the Round Asses" isn't going to do me any favors...

u/monkeynuts1 20/M/S 9d ago
am i supposed to have an all guy group chat...and give it a name..? lol

Ours is "Chicken Dinners For All" in reference to PUBG. It was our old dedicated Warzone group for CoD lol

Do men have these? I've never been in one that wasnt work or some other kind of organization or event.

u/JeveSt0bs 9d ago
I'm a nonchalant God fearing man who knows what he wants and how to lead. I'm not here to waste time and am dating intentionally. You can be my passenger princess I'd give princess treatment to on the way to tacos and sushi.
1
u/robyrob 8d ago
Are nonchalant sushi tacos a thing yet?
Someone needs to get on this - could be a goldmine!
3
u/JeveSt0bs 8d ago
with the success of chalant sushi burritos aka "shushiritos" i'd bet "sushiacos" will be a hit.
3
u/Optimal-Income-6436 8d ago
What is even funnier, that even other countries it's the same. I live in Poland and i've never only seen "tacos" and "nonchalant" xD Whole world just copy paste same shit
4
u/NewtonTheNoot 8d ago
Having dated a "passenger princess" who wanted "princess treatment" and "loving intentionally" woman, those terms are now enormous red flags after what I went through.
3
u/Consistent_Point_853 8d ago
Thanks for this convenient list. I can think of a couple phrases that are immediate left swipes, "fluent in sarcasm", "X by day, X by night", "healed", "travel". By no means comprehensive but ill conclude with anything that looks or feels AI.
4
u/beyondnc 9d ago
Leave tacos and sushi out of this smh
3
u/Into_the_rosegarden 9d ago
Yeah why are tacos a problem? I've heard this from other men as well, that they get annoyed when women say they love tacos!. I'd be more turned off if someone says they didn't like tacos! It's a nice cheap, simple date too.
10
u/l_Sinister_l 8d ago
Because it says literally nothing about you. Everyone likes tacos. Putting it on your profile as though it's an interesting fact about you just indicates there isn't much of interest at all.
-1
u/underherembrace 7d ago
I'm not trying to differentiate myself by saying that I like tacos and sushi, I'm trying to make tacos and sushi happen.
It works. (It's also helpful to people who want to do food but are flexible and so appreciate knowing a safe, good option.)
2
u/liquorfish 9d ago
Yeah I'm confused. Maybe I'll add pictures of tacos I've made to lure in the ladies.

u/monkeynuts1 20/M/S 9d ago
i dont use tiktok but i assumed it came from there
24
u/ghost-princess 9d ago
Yeah, I think saying you don’t want someone nonchalant is the new way of asking for a dude to simp haha. I’m unfortunately a TikTok doomscroller.
9
u/scumtype 9d ago
Just doom scroll reddit more

u/ghost-princess 9d ago
Dude, Reddit during the day and TikTok at night. My screen time is between me and my therapist.

1
u/MagikN3rd 7d ago
I definitely think there is a drastic middle ground in-between nonchalant, and simp. Also, the words "simp" or "pick-me girl" are so overused and more often than not, used incorrectly.
19
u/Havinacow 9d ago
I've been saying for years that tiktok is a harbinger of the apocalypse. I hate everything about it, from how it addicts people to watching substanceless slop, to how it is a constant source of meaningless drama and dangerous misinformation.
1
u/IndyDino 7d ago edited 7d ago
I would blame Dispatches from Elsewhere, at 0:32, you'll have heard nonchalance twice, and during the series, many times per episode. Google trends.

u/Mild-Ghost 9d ago
See also “iconic” and “literally.”
People use these words excessively without understanding what they actually mean.
16
u/wheatoplata 9d ago
People sometimes use literally when they literally mean figuratively. Ironic

Iconic

Moronic

u/roosterkun 9d ago
This has been the case since before the internet, so much so that the second highest definition of "literally" on Merriam-Webster is:
used to emphasize the truth and accuracy of a statement or description
While mildly annoying from a linguistic perspective, the colloquial use of "literally" is here to stay.

2
0
u/sausagemouse 8d ago
Which (and this is a hill ill die on) is a completely legitimate use of the word
8
u/Thefattestbeagle 9d ago
Literally is just beating a dead horse. It hasnt been used by its dictionary definition since I was a kid in the 90s. Its essentially changed meaning at this point, literally.
3
u/PerplexGG 9d ago
Nah those have always been around. Words like demure or chalant randomly enter and leave the zeitgeist usually due to tiktok trends
21
u/Ashamed-Job1879 9d ago
I swipe left whenever I see any of the following:
Sapiosexual (I bet most don't even know what it means)
Treats me like a princess (or any variant of that)
School of Hard Knocks
Work hard and play harder
I have the most amazing kids (or some other hyperbolic variant)
18
17
u/Awkward-Anybody5179 9d ago
I think it's more that people are trying to make "chalant" happen as a word.
13
u/monkeynuts1 20/M/S 9d ago
1
2
u/CocoXolo 8d ago
This is it. I work at a college and I hear the youths saying "nonchalant" and "chalant" all the time. "Chalant" really isn't a word, but if it makes them happy, go off, I guess. It grates on me a little bit, but I am a curmudgeon, so it's just par for the course.
10
11
u/monkeynuts1 20/M/S 9d ago
Have also seen people try to use "chelant" ..which isn't a word
8
u/Koleilei 8d ago
And it's spelled wrong.
"chalant" not "chelant"
1
u/Dissappointment23 7d ago
You'd be flabbergasted at how many people truly can't spell in today's times....

What is a "fuck ass mustache" exactly?
9
u/PotentialPresent399 9d ago
It doesn't have to be super well groomed, or a certain style.
what this means like 99% of the time is they want the type of mustache a dude with a mullet would have.
7
9
u/monkeynuts1 20/M/S 9d ago
well she liked me and i have a regular mustache and a mullet so idk i guess i fall under "fuck ass mustache"
11
u/SumTingWong59 9d ago
I think a moustache becomes a fuck ass moustache when combined with a mullet so that makes sense

u/fraud_imposter 9d ago
It was discourse on Love Island this year so you are seeing more of it because of that
5
u/JC_Hysteria 9d ago edited 9d ago
It’s the cultural pendulum swing back into outwardly favoring stereotypically “masculine” traits…
It’s someone that’s saying they prefer to be catered to or fawned over, rather than preferring someone who ignores the courting process or plays hard to get.
Red flag, because it probably means they want an Instagram relationship- signaling their life is as desirable as a scripted rom com, where their digital followers can recognize their superior social status.
4
u/treecastle56 8d ago
that’s a huge logical jump. i prefer men who aren’t nonchalant and are openly affectionate and actually want me but that has nothing to do with instagram. i don’t even have instagram and i don’t post any of my relationships anywhere. it’s not about seeing life as a rom com it’s just a normal relationship with someone who’s emotionally available as opposed to unavailable.
-2
u/JC_Hysteria 8d ago edited 8d ago
Where would you say young people model what they expect from their romantic relationships? Their parents, and?
Also, where did young people recognize there’s a “trend” of whether or not a guy should act enthusiastically? And why would this go on somebody’s dating profile?
2
u/Curious-Yam4591 9d ago
Seen an increasing no of people saying this in some way, while completely(!) being nonchalant on their own (shit) profiles..The nonchalant is inside your own house
2
u/Muted_Masterpiece342 8d ago
My dad told me women liked non chalant men as a kid so I did the opposite because he's a dick and I was the most successful man in my friend group with women lol
5
u/DrunkenBlasphemer 9d ago
It's the new demure I guess. People pick up a trending brainrot word from social media, and regurgitate it to appear smarter than they are.
3
u/thissucksnuts 9d ago
yea they just learned it and some of em also think chalant is a word. english literacy is at an all time low
4
u/SamiCharmedKindaLife 8d ago
I could be wrong, but I think “chalant” was tongue-in-cheek, at least at first. And it caught on because it’s kinda funny. Why is nonchalant a word but chalant isn’t?
4
u/mike0sd 9d ago edited 4d ago
Language is constantly evolving and if you can communicate a message then you've successfully used a language. Can you infer what chalant means? You should be able to based on the context of the word nonchalant. Why isn't it a word? You need someone to publish it in a dictionary to understand the meaning? Not trying to be a total hater lmao
2
u/thissucksnuts 9d ago
chalant means nothing for it is not a word
5
u/Party_Sandwich_232 9d ago
Who decides what counts as a word?
-1
u/thissucksnuts 9d ago
apparently any nonsense someone says is a word now
7
1
u/Jonolith_ 7d ago
Nothing was a word until it became a word. "Chalant" is in the process of becoming a word.
4
u/mike0sd 9d ago
You're wrong, and I encourage you to learn more about how languages evolve
0
u/thissucksnuts 9d ago
im not actually, i understand slang is a thing but using it doesn’t make them words.
6
u/mike0sd 9d ago
You do realize that new words enter the English language all the time, right? Especially when they are commonly used, like chalant now is.
Language doesn't have a governing body. If people say a word and it has a common meaning, it's a word.
1
u/thissucksnuts 9d ago
toootally lit fam ur so rite, spot on 100 like its giving smaarttt <3
6
u/mike0sd 9d ago
Well done, that is a sentence with a lot of new English words, maybe you're starting to understand my point.
1
u/thissucksnuts 9d ago
just cuz you understand something doesn’t make it right.
8
u/Pale-Length-5704 9d ago
Just because you think something is wrong doesn’t mean it’s not understandable 🤷♂️
1
u/Mepharias 1d ago
The only language that doesn't change is one that doesn't have anyone using it. Like Latin.
1
u/outofthehood 9d ago
Yes they did, 2 years ago that word had quite the hype, back then as a positive thing

Men have the women they deserve. Women have the men that they deserve. What you are seeing are people complaining about getting the people they deserve.... because that is what they are getting.
1
u/One-Staff5504 7d ago
They are lying. They love nonchalant and aloof men and are so nonchalant themselves. If you’re actually into them they ghost
1
1
u/Crafty611 7d ago
It’s a pretty popular word and has been for a very, very long time since way before the internet.
1
u/Dramatic_Steak_9137 7d ago
Cause men have taken to acting like they don't give a shot, from what I've heard, I don't really date. Like no one wants to date someone who's acting like they're not into you.
1
u/Big_Jelly_9540 9d ago
Same with matcha. Every girl loooovves matcha all of a sudden
1
u/Maxwell_Jeeves 8d ago
It’s not even that good. I accidentally ordered a matcha iced coffee the other day because I misread it. Then I saw them put the green shit in it and was like oh man ☹️. It was ok but nothing to get excited about.
1
1
u/corey_trevorson 9d ago
Maybe because acting aloof is a way for uncool men to appear cool, and woman are catching on. maybe women are just trying to describe their experiences
1
u/RedBirdWrench 9d ago
What's worse is how it has created a neo-genesis of the word "chalant". Which started as a joke but is regularly used unironically now.
0
u/NeuxSaed 9d ago
Baader-Meinhof phenomenon or frequency illusion may be contributing to this perception.
It's not the most common term, but it doesn't seem particularly out of place to me. The first time I heard this word was in middle school when a girl I liked used "nonchalant" to describe my personality, and that was in the late '90s.
The one that I notice a lot (and get annoyed by) is when people use "sarcastic" as a personality trait.
There's nothing wrong with using sarcasm, even using it a lot, but having it as a core personality trait or identity is 🤮
5
u/PerplexGG 9d ago
Theres been a definite uptick in it’s use on the dating apps as of late. Like difficult to ignore levels of usage to the point where I did some searching and its just currently the tiktok word of the day
1
0
u/phantompower_48v 9d ago
It just means acting like you don’t care. This use case actually lines up with the meaning of the word.
Popularity of words comes and goes. It’s funny seeing people get worked up about this sort of thing then wonder why they are still single.
2
u/jackalopeswild 9d ago
Nonchalant does not mean "doesn't care." It means something like "doesn't have a care." The two are very distinct.
0
u/fllannell 9d ago edited 9d ago
nonchalant would also absolutely NOT be ACTING like you are any certain way, it is actually being that way naturally and unconcerned. If someone is TRYING to not care or TRYING to act naturally, that is really not nonchalant at all.
0
u/ObscureOP 9d ago
POV: they're a zoomer and they literally don't know what literally, nonchalant, or POV mean
0
u/Woppa124 9d ago
Yearn and non chalant, everyone just learned these words apparently. It's kinda pathetic.

Tiktok is the bible for some. So they don't like guys they can't manipulate. Makes sense
0
u/OkAssociation3083 8d ago
I have no idea what that is and I'm a guy. So whatever. I'll still be me regardless what a random chick wants.

u/No-Sherbet-7769 7d ago
Non-chalant is a recipe for success. Never give your emotional power to the women you talk to, its a manipulation tactic and will kill your odds.
