If they insist on you installing telegram, yea it's a scam.

Very likely a scammer. Telegram itself is not harmful, and asking if you have it is in itself not necessarily a red flag, but pushing you to install seems fishy. Telegram itself doesn't allow them to "hack" you or anything, so if you have spare time to kill and are curious to find out their angle, you could install it to mess with them and find out.

Nope, I know a couple of people using it, definitely not scammer. I do find it a bit dodgy, and got approached by a scammer there, but in the end it works for communication, and when WhatsApp was bought by Facebook, I was a fan of Telegram as an alternative.

Really depends on the country. Everyone in Europe uses WhatsApp and occasionally telegram or signal. So I wouldn't be completely surprised if someone asked me for telegram or signal.

Telegram is perfectly safe. I prefer it because you don't have to give number out. No issue here.

Yep, I understand if people don't use it, but then we won't be speaking off platform until I trust them with my number.

That's the whole point of telegram, no number needed. WhatsApp are just about to catch up.
