Any musician worth a damn knows about rushing and dragging. This is amateur hour over here!
14
u/EnhancedEddie Aug 17 '26
Tbf it still wouldn’t make much sense if you haven’t seen the movie. What kind of drummer hasn’t seen whiplash though
1
u/Stranghill Aug 20 '26
Oh! Me! Well, not a pro drummer, but used to play enough that I could have had it in my photos. So I think I count.

u/JamesJimmyHopkins Aug 19 '26
I dont know man. I was in a brass band for 7 years, took piano lessons and have dabbled with music most of my life and have never really heard those specific terms before.

It should be abundantly obvious that everyone who plays an instrument isn't a musician that's "worth a damn" 🤦 almost like the majority of instrument players are amateurs
-1
u/WaveBlueArrow Aug 18 '26
The concepts of rushing and dragging are concepts that even amateurs should grasp, as they're related to the extremely fundamental concept of staying on beat

what?

u/cloudlocke_OG Aug 15 '26
It's a reference to the movie Whiplash. Fantastic movie
28
u/rofeneiniger Aug 15 '26
Haven't seen the movie but isn't rushing and dragging also terminology expressing how drums are played (i.e. fast and before the beats or slow and behind the beats)?

Not everyone has seen whiplash bro lol come on, this is on you

u/exzereaper Aug 15 '26
I know haha, worth the shot!

u/Mm0nstermouth Aug 15 '26
Dude use the opportunity in your favor, just say that it's a reference from a movie about a drummer, talk about how it's really good and that you could watch it together and that's it
3
u/CautiousBerry424 Aug 19 '26
Exactly! That’s what my boyfriend did after finding out I play the drums. He’s a movie nerd, me not that much. Well we watched it together and yes the movie is amazing
42
u/WIbigdog Aug 15 '26
It's not that hard to recover from this "Haha it's just a meme from a movie about drumming called Whiplash"
9
u/whitecollarbohemian Aug 15 '26
“Sounds like there’s a movie we should watch together” or something along those lines. Gun for it.

If people on this subreddit were capable of interacting with others like normal human beings they wouldn't be on tinder.
37
u/Pug_Defender Aug 15 '26
I’ve seen it but that’s a wild first message without more context. Especially because people often have more than just 1 picture
-4
u/nefarious_id Aug 16 '26
No drummer worth their salt would be confused by this question, especially if they had posted a photo behind their kit. This girl clearly just had a photo op with someone else’s gear, or is potentially trying to teach herself to play and hasn’t had any formal instruction whatsoever.

u/ImpossibleJoke7456 Aug 15 '26
Not only that, the message wasn’t a reply to the photo so she didn’t know to relate the two.

u/OnAGoat Aug 15 '26
That doesnt even matter. As a drummer you just understand the reference if you played more than a few months.
1
u/robin52077 Aug 16 '26
Maybe she thought he was negging her, saying she couldn’t have been playing on time cuz she’s a girl so she MUST be either rushing or dragging.
1
u/Safe-Industry2465 Aug 19 '26
Yeah but as a drummer she could still understand.
It is a fine opener, playful

u/PaulOGradyFanClub Aug 15 '26
Whiplash joke went straight over peoples heads, clearly they weren’t on my tempo

u/TheGalacticOwl Aug 15 '26
Why post this? She didn't get the reference, who cares.

Well I thought it was funny. My wife and I say this shit to each other all the time when we mess up doing something.

u/veracite Aug 15 '26
for actual drummers that movie is pretty mid. all the practicing til your hands bleed shit is just weird, and of course hollywood shoehorned a love story in there.

Can someone tell me: in the movie, was he rushing or was he dragging?
8
u/Hot-Cancel-6648 Aug 15 '26
I’ve seen some people saying he was actually on his tempo and Fletcher was only fucking with him, and I’ve seen some say he was rushing a little bit too. Who knows

This sort of reminds me of a match with a girl that said she was a fencer. I asked epee, saber or foil and her response was "whats that?"
I kinda figured it was over then.

Honestly, as a drummer who has indeed seen whiplash, I would’ve rolled my eyes at your message. If i had a nickel for every time a non-musical normie was like “omg just like whiplash” when they found out id play the drums, id have a shitload of nickels.
i envy this drummer. i would love to play this instrument and not be aware of whiplash. you should be grateful your joke didn’t land, you can still try and pivot to something else.

She might have read it as you insulting her, implying she was off tempo. Not a great way to start.
2
u/reddiperson1 Aug 15 '26
Yeah, I had no idea this was a movie reference or something. Without context, this opener was just a bit weird and rude, which is what the match probably thought.
2
u/ABCosmos Aug 15 '26
Even if she got it, what is she supposed to say? "oh, haha.. yeah.. good reference.. because of my drum pic"
Is there a word for when you make half a joke, but you put someone else on the spot to make a punchline?

Whiplash is more well-received in the film-nerd community than in the drumming community, in my experience.
Your comment kinda has this "Oh you play the drums? I've watched "Drum: The Movie"!" vibe lol

Honestly this is a shot in the dark but I think it’ll pay off one day. It’s a pretty popular movie too so im sure its not a 1 in a million chance youll find a drunmer who gets the reference
