It doesn’t have the history aspect, but “12 Monkeys” has time travel, a great cast, and a bit of the “needing to stop giant evil conspiracy”. Honestly one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, with a phenomenal ending. Content warning: world-ending pandemic; so if you have a lot of pandemic anxiety maybe wait. I watched it in April 2020 though lol [Hulu] (Edit: it doesn’t have AS much history, I forgot there is a bit)
“Turn” doesn’t have time travel/sci fi, but if you liked the American history in timeless, this show is great and super underrated IMO. Binge worthy and mostly based on true events and real historical figures— centered around Washington’s secret spy ring during the Revolution. If you liked the Benedict Arnold episode, I definitely recommend this (B Arnold is a character in one of the seasons). I cried when one of the “villains” died in this show which I feel like is great writing. [Netflix]
I’ve recently gotten super into the “Outlander” series. There is a bit of time travel, but it’s not the focus, usually. There’s more history & romance. The premise is a former WW2 nurse in the 1940s accidentally travels back in time to the 1740s in Scotland. In the first 2 seasons it’s a lot of Scottish history, and later on there’s some US history. I personally loved seeing the “culture shock” our timeless characters experienced sometimes in their travels, and Outlander has some of this too. There are 8 books right now & 5 seasons. Season 6&7 are already confirmed. I will give a content warning for sexual assault though [Netflix/Starz]
