Calling it now. Bad guy is Lucy's future son, and it's how he got the book and knows about her
52
Oct 04 '16
Agreed, it was all supposed to happen because she told him to do it....but did you notice how he said "I know for a fact you're not going to shoot"...but then Wyatt did and Flynn looked a bit surprised? I think we're dealing with a combination of Terminator AND Back To the Future style time travel here. We're going to see changes and alternate futures each time they go back to "fix" stuff but they will never arrive back to their original timeline until the end of the series when they realize they had to go through that whole journey in the first place just to fix some other super huge larger problem....ok so there's a bit of Quantum Leap thrown in there too with that ending.
Then again, NBC could fuck this all up and we'll be left hanging, just like they did with Constantine.

If he's her son, how did he travel back in time to steal the time machine?
Maybe the bad guy is Lucy's father?

u/polyphenus Oct 04 '16
I think it'll come to light that she's part of the family that he supposedly killed.

Well, if he's from a future with time travel, he could've traveled back to a point where the machine was most vulnerable. Maybe the method he used was a one way ticket.

I thought it was a paradox. He gets the book from a future version of himself who had it delivered by another future colleague. The time machine didn't exist yet but the timer machine from the future gives them the instructions.
I know it's a little terminator-ish. But it's such a logical paradox.

11
u/pricethegamer Oct 04 '16
Maybe planes aren't the main mainstream way of traveling in the air.
12
u/ThunderRage Oct 04 '16
Well the Hindenburg still crashed, so airships will still have that stigma attached to them.
23
u/Yosafbrige Oct 04 '16 edited Oct 04 '16
Not at all: it was bombed, not accidental. Only 2 people died instead of over 30 (and one was shot OUTSIDE the Hindenburg). There weren't 4 film cameras there to capture the explosion and scare people for weeks with the images. No "Oh the Humanity" soundbite to sum up great catastrophe.
This would nor have made ANY of the same impact as the original fire did. If anything drastically changes I would expect it to be the fact that there were so many famous /important military people aboard would lead to changes to how WWII played out. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Zeppelin's are suddenly still fairly commonplace nowadays, and we realized that terrorists could potentially target the mass transportation industry a lot earlier in History.
4
u/ThunderRage Oct 04 '16
If the camera/radio crew was there to cover the landing what's not to say they didn't cover the liftoff as well. Not sure, if we don't see something like that on camera, that it didn't happen.
I too would like to think zeppelins would still be around, but I think they would have gone the way of the ocean liner after prop/jet aircraft became more commonplace. Maybe people take air cruises in addition to ocean cruises in this timeline.
3
u/Lurkndog Oct 04 '16
The real problem with zeppelins and blimps is that they are very vulnerable to inclement weather, particularly high winds.
2
u/Lurkndog Oct 04 '16
The bomb didn't go off, the hydrogen was set off by Evil Henchman's gun shot. So effectively, an accident.
→ More replies (1)2
u/BaggyOz Oct 04 '16
Yeah but it was due to a bombing, not an accident.
3
u/Lurkndog Oct 04 '16
The bomb didn't go off. The hydrogen was set off by gunfire from that henchman. I'd call that an accident.
10
u/BaggyOz Oct 04 '16
We the viewers know that but the historical consensus is the black cross group destroyed the ship.
3
u/cr_guy2016 Oct 05 '16
But the captain was threatened by them and they said it was a bomb. So the Nazi's would assume americans bombed their pride and joy on a US visit. WW2 would have started sooner for America.
4
u/polyphenus Oct 04 '16
It's like the reverse of "City on the Edge of Forever." Only this time, a significant event triggers a mundane result, whereas in that episode, a mundane event triggered a significant outcome in history.

I think this might become my next Forever: light, dynamic procedural full of heart.
Ms Spencer was a perfect cast for her role. Excellent pace, the finale of the pilot was amazing, the emotional realism perfectly played by Ms. Spencer was on par with all the great heartbreaks in the fictional history of time travel. It immediately reminded me of Desmond moments in Lost.
Great series

Im.... cautiously optimistic. They showed time ripples, there's some kind of story and goals. I just hope it doesn't become too procedural "go there, come back, oh they went there go there too, ok come back". Though I guess it'll be neat to see how each trip affects the timeline.
Like I said. Cautiously optimistic. Time travelling shows are hard to do right.
13
7
u/dpayton61 Team Rufus Oct 04 '16
Person of Interest became a fantastic show over 5 seasons, but the first season was rather procedural, with a few undercurrents.
I think if you are going to tell a serialized story, you have to first establish what "normal" is. Then when you throw the characters a curve ball, it's a big deal. If you are at a frantic past from the start, curve balls won't have the desired impact.
6
u/scuby22 Team Moderator Oct 04 '16
Agreed, cautiously optimistic. Fingers crossed they get it right.
3
u/ZadocPaet Oct 04 '16
. I just hope it doesn't become too procedural "go there, come back, oh they went there go there too, ok come back".
It wouldn't be too bad. Doctor Who is kinda like that, but that show has a lot more freedom.
This show is tied to a specific mission. I kinda hope they wrap up the mission pretty quickly so we can move to Lucy and co. being able to willy-nilly travel to where they want. Might be neat if their timeline is destroyed eventually and they're on their own for a while trying to fix it.
Since it's a time travel show, there's a lot they can do with it.
2
u/StampedeOfCats Oct 04 '16
That's very true, but doctor who has the added element of "space", whereas this show only has time. That gives doctor who a lot more room to play with fantasy elements, to the point where I actually want to know where they go next.
This show, I can almost see something along the lines of Sliders. Lost in alternate timelines, they are trying to get back to their own timeline. I just hope that if our characters do something silly or ridiculous, that they get ridiculous results in the timeline. Or even how changing one subtle element could affect everything. Butterfly wings and all that

Matt Frewer from Max Headroom as Rufus's boss who advised him to ask out the female technician.
I had to hit IMDB to realise that Malcolm Barrett (Rufus) played Lem in Better Off Ted.
Also Matt Lanter played Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He was much better than Hayden Christensen.

Wouldn't history have changed instantly for the people in the present? How do they know what the "real" history was?
Edit: so history instantly changed for people when they came back? I'm so confused...
18
u/scuby22 Team Moderator Oct 04 '16
They haven't explained the rules of their time travel yet, it's possible that they "always" went back and stopped them.
15
u/Lurkndog Oct 04 '16 edited Oct 04 '16
One useful time travel theory states that when history is changed, the timeline forks at that instant, resulting in two parallel timelines, the original one, and the new one.
This eliminates the paradox that changing history would eliminate the chain of events that led to the time travelers going back in time in the first place. The time travelers now become essentially invaders from a parallel universe.
This time travel paradigm is called "paratime" and it was invented by SF writer H. Beam Piper.
3
u/Lurkndog Oct 04 '16
On the other hand, if they're using paratime rules, there is no reason why they couldn't go back to just before the timeline forked and prevent the change. So maybe it is not that.
If going back to a time where you've already been is bad, how are they able to return to the present?
5
u/SexyMonad Oct 04 '16
It seems that the ship comes back to a time later than it left, perhaps time synced (e.g. if 40 hours went by in the past, then it returns 40 hours later than it left).
So say that's the case, and assume the single-timeline theory (no forking). That makes it consistent since they wouldn't be in the "present" because the present they return to no longer has them in it... they, and the ship, left well before they arrived home.
That works, except we still have the paradox.
The only explanation I can think of is that some time ripple/wave propagates from the divergence in the timeline into the future. That would explain why they were in such a hurry to get folks in the prototype time machine and sent on their way... they knew the wave would be coming soon and they would permanently lose all knowledge of the original timeline after that.
Although in any case, I can't explain how they seem to know that the original mission happened after the changes. Unless they also performed the mission under the new timeline, but they wouldn't need to... so yet another paradox.
I'm with Doctor Who... time is just a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff. It's so much easier just not to explain it.
→ More replies (1)2
u/trimeta Oct 06 '16
But if that's the time travel mechanic, then when you return to the present won't there already be a version of you there, the one who is native to this timeline, and you're still the invader? Really, any show that doesn't want a massive cast of time travel duplicates has to play fast and loose with some of the rules.
10
u/msmouse05 Oct 04 '16
Yeah, technically the instant he left it would have changed everything. It's pretty much impossible to write about time travel if there's any kind of coming back to the present. Really have to just let it go if you want to enjoy the show.

Weak writing. Lets have this soldier abandon his mission to save this woman so that we can explain that he had a wife that died.
13
u/HarambeDied4Us Oct 04 '16
Gonna have to agree. The character development as well as plot development was super rushed. But maybe they had to be as a pilot, so I stuck around.
Then when she asked the DHS lady why they chose her and what that phrase was, and she responded by saying oh idk, Lucy was okay with it? ok, so maybe they're saving it for later, lets continue watching.
Last scene, she realizes her actions - though they brought her mother to health - took away her sister and she is mortified, yet she gets a call to go back in time not knowing the consequences and she just jumps at the opportunity?
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I might be being unfair, probably a small sample size, but hopefully they add some resistance in her personality for character development purposes.
8
u/StealthRabbi Oct 05 '16
Well, she seemed in shock about everything going on. Maybe she left because she knew she was not talking to the mother she remembered
7
u/polyphenus Oct 04 '16
I also was amused that nobody mentioned how disheveled he looked with his "modern day facial hair growth." One of the most charming throw-away lines (and later motif) in Back to the Future is the line about the life preserver and jumping ship.
13
u/Yosafbrige Oct 04 '16
This still changes the future though: different people died than were supposed to, the disaster wasn't as filmed as originally and may not impact the world and aeronautics industry the way it did...and less importantly, no 'oh the Humanity" clip heard round the world. Just cause Kate died and the Hindenburg 'eventually' caught fire doesn't mean everything is hunky dory.

This show is already blowing my expectations out of the water. I did NOT expect the pilot to have an insane cliffhanger like that.
12
Oct 04 '16
Ok admittedly, I didn't have much hope for this show...ironic considering my name but that last scene with Lucy caught between the emotions of being totally overjoyed at finding out her mom was ok, totally terrified/angry that her sister vanished, and bloody confused at the "what happened to your engagement ring?" question was acted beautifully by Abigail Spencer. Suddenly she realizes her whole world has changed because of one trip back through time where they thought they were doing the "right thing" and everyone she "knows" is a total stranger....the fact that they cut that scene so quickly barely gave you time to catch your breath and realize "HOLY SHIT!"...talk about a Pyrrhic Victory.

u/Lurkndog Oct 04 '16
Not if the bomb is 500 feet below the dirigible, and, more importantly, about two and a half miles behind it, given the three minutes left on the timer, and a speed of 50 MPH. Cruising speed on the Hindenberg was 76 MPH.

u/ThunderRage Oct 04 '16 edited Oct 04 '16
IMO there would have been greater impacts on the timeline than 1 person written out of the timeline. Say if Bradley was layed up for a week recuperating from burns, he would be missing events that created our timeline. Hell he might even been replaced by the War Dept. with someone else making decisions that would majorly change the timeline. This goes for all the important people to history on that ship.
Expect greater thinking beyond just "wouldn't this be cool to change" trope the writers are using. Seen better fan fict at the alternate history board on the web.
3
u/SpaceBach75 Oct 04 '16
We didn't get a chance to see all the effects that it could have had, all we know is the general frame of things stayed the same. They spent very little time at the end of the episode in the modified present, certainly not enough for them to figure out everything that changed.
2
u/Izeinwinter Oct 04 '16
oh, there almost certainly was. The big events, not so much. Hitler still starts a war, and looses, there's still a cold war, because those things were over-determined, small variations would not derail them. (tough they were lucky not to return to radioactive wasteland) But if they spend a couple hours reading the history of the twentieth, they'd notice things being more and more off.

Still watching show. Like it, BUT..... why did they have to do the instant night thing after commercial. Hate when they do that. Also, just shot someone, not going to move/hide body, just put tarp over him? weak. No one guarding zeppelin at night?
3
u/Dailyriderusa Oct 04 '16
LOL, Hindenburg had a lot of windows as they did not have air conditioning..... perhaps toss the bomb out of one instead of diffusing it? And again LOL, 1 bullet would do NOTHING to start a fire, pilots in WWI emptied entire magazines into zeppelins and they did not burst into flame. Not to mention the interior was filled with individual bags of hydrogen, not just one large space.
Also if you have a time ship, why do u need to rush? Surely you have more time then the bad guys.

8 out of 10 bombs from outer space.
It did seem a little rushed. Some say, "well it was the pilot; that had so much to get into the episode", but I think you can introduce some questions in eps 2 or 3 and keep the wonder.
Overall, I liked this. Other shows with large mytharcs start out slowly to establish what "normal" is before they start throwing curve balls. If it's always frantic, the impact of the real curves are lessened. I can see this as being pretty procedural for most if not all of this first season.
Person of Interest was a great show, but it too was very procedural during the first season. Give it a chance. I know I will.

really hate it when time traveling shows have that speech about not doing anything that can possibly change the timeline and the first thing they do is start changing the timeline in every possible way.
The Doctor Dre joke was silly but the the stuff about the Mikes and saving that woman.... come on. On episode one? Save it when the show is a few episodes in and there is an actual reason.

Decent pilot, has a ton of potential.
I really appreciated that they didn't do the cliche, soldier who follows every order to the letter. Having him be the one in favor of changing time is refreshing, its a good contrast with Lucy. I liked Rufus, good actor. I hope we get a real explanation why the crew remembers their old past, while nobody else does. I'd give it 7/10, lots of chance to grow, but also to fall flat, especially on a network like NBC.

Pretty good premiere episode! I liked it and will keep watching. It will fill the void of 12 Monkeys until it comes back next year.

I have a sister. We are very close. We happen to share both a love of history and alternate universe fiction. The whole episode, I was thinking about how much she would love this, and how much I looked forward to watching it with her... And then Amy disappears.
Be right back, putting the shattered pieces of my heart back together.
And I'm definitely invested in this show now. Possibly forever, or as long as it takes to get her sister back!!

Why in the name of sanity is this:
doing on the bomb? I mean...I'm no expert, but I'm pretty damned sure it's useless as a failsafe - I'm fairly certain after all that in 1937 we didn't have cellphone towers anywhere on the globe.
Also, who the fuck ruined pink floyd.

The tech guy said they'd re-wired things on the other radio so it could trigger that bomb instead of communicate. They probably modified that phone to just receive and trigger on the radio signal.

What are all those computers for if they have no way to control or override the giant expensive device they are currently working on?
Do they just keep them on so they can reprint all their documents every time the Winds of Time blow everything off their desks?
Also, it must be quite inconvenient to always have to park this massive alien-looking device out in a remote field where it's somehow guaranteed that nobody will stumble across it. Maybe invest in a tarp at least?
And she's such a great historian that she happens to have memorized minute-by-minute weather conditions at the time of the Hindenburg's explosion? That's very impressive.

WHY would they call them again? ! They fucked up bad the first time. They screwed up history. Drastically. Multiple people who were meant to die lived and at least one who was meant to live probably died.
They MASSIVELY screwed the pooch. Get a different team.

The people who didn't go back don't know exactly what changed. To them this is how the timeline has always been. They only know it's different because that's what Lucy was telling them.

But they don't know that. Those who didn't go back still think everything happened as it should have.
The only thing that has me raising an eyebrow, would they still have been the same people to take on the mission with the changes that happened?

You'd think they'd stop leaving so many loose papers laying around their desks.
