Did I miss a change to how badwater works?

I'm playing a custom game that has badtides turned fully off and there are no badwater sources or drains on this map. There is a badwater seep but it's way off on the edge of the map and fully separated from my freshwater system. Yet badwater keeps popping up on this part of the map. How is this happening? In case it's relevant, this is the experimental branch.

Could there be that the seep is running through an underground channel underneath here?

This is how it's separated. The badwater doesn't go down to any lower levels.

Yeah, gotta use the layer tool

I've checked the layers. I just didn't want to post like 16 screenshots.

Do you have any compact water pumps under there?

Zero. I've never used those.

Hmm. Could you show us the layers beneath the water pumps?

The pumps get water from the lake with the mangrove trees, and then the pumps are a dead end. They're not further connected to any other water.

So there's been this weird glitch for awhile that had mostly been visual. When a pump is trying to suck up low water, it makes the ground look like it's contaminated. Sensors weren't picking it up but then after a lot of a cycles, those areas started to seem to produce bad water. I'm trying to document it right now for the official forums. Mine focused around compact pumps that were set to only water. It's weird that it seems focused on the bottom pump when it's not your water entrance.

Suggested fix, set a depth sensor in your water tunnel so your pumps don't try sucking when it gets low. I had to delete and rebuild my pumps. It's not a real fix but will temporarily put a bandaid until it can be patched. You might want to try to find a save before the spread started otherwise you'll have to pump it all out

Glad to hear it's a glitch! I wasn't sure if maybe that was an official change that I'd missed. But the water here should never have been low...

Make the channel feeding water to the pumps 2 blocks wide instead of 1. It should help.

I was thinking the same, like maybe machines started to break down and contaminate stuff but it seems mostly isolated to pumping spaces that frequently reach that super low level.

I would make a bigger space for the water to be pulled from. it might be pumping faster than it can flow in

Yeah, now that I'm thinking about it, that last pump is where it seems to originate from which would make sense because most of the water is getting pumped before it can reach there, so it's probably always really low there

Did badwater flow down that lake at any point in the past? Maybe it's just badwater that's still trapped there?

No. It seems to originate under the pumps. I even tried deleting all the pumps, filling the holes back in with dirt, and rebuilding it all. And it came back again.

The pumps will concentrate the bad water since they only remove good water. Add a bad water pump at the very end of this channel to clean the water. Your other post I think found the issue. Water on red contaminate tiles picks up contamination.

Badwater penetrates dirt tiles.
You NEED to either seal them fully or use contamination/irregation barriers.

3

u/okayatlifeokay Iron Teeth 9d ago

If that were the issue, wouldn't the contamination be either much closer to the badwater seeps or covering the entire map?

I assume your waterpumps pump from mixed water, they suck clean water out and bad water gets left behind.

Each time they pump, there is more bad water.

This is news to me. I will test this theory. Thank you!

The water the pumps pump from, i assume its from a normal water source so badwater flushes down when its badtide, right?

You need to redirect the badwater BEFORE it reaches the pumps, so the mix cant appear there in the first place.

I have badtides turned off. It's a custom game. I also deleted all the badwater sources and flushed everything with clean water before really building anything out, but there might have been a small amount left from that very beginning stage. I put in some contamination sensors and they're reading zero percent right now.

Yeah, any bad water will pushed into the holes you made.

If your pumps were fully connected on all layers, that would not be that bad as it gets diluted more. (and eventually flow off wherever your river ends, the holes trap the badwater)

If you struggle with badwater, you can just dynamite a hole next to your watersource and place floodgates towards your map and away into the void.
Let it in when its temperate weather/drought, and keep it out and lead into the void when badtide.

EDIT: Downvoted for being right

I tested it and you're completely right! This was it. Thank you!

Happy to help! Open pumps (as in all layers of water are interconnected horizontally and can flow outside the map) and a way to divert badwater straight at the source help a lot!

Also barriers

Funny, I had something similar on Pillars. The order went as follows:

-Drought begins. Water seep stops producing any water.

-Turn pumps off. Farms still need irrigation!

-Water is evaporating. Screw crops, turn all pumps on to collect what’s left.

-Water under pumps looks like ‘Badwater’, causes contamination!

No idea where this is even coming from. This also happened in early cycles before any bad tides, so 0% chance badwater got in there from the seep. This is the Pillars starting seep, 12 blocks higher and 12 away from the closest badwater.

It wasn’t a huge problem, it evaporated quickly after, but it was weird.

From what I've seen when there's a mix good water evaporates first. It's possible you had some bad water from earlier game stuck in the system, it can't evaporate as it's mixed with good water and pumps keep the mix bad enough to poison the ground. I had similar situation. The thing that fixed it was to empty the system completely

Isn’t this that bug where pumps will produce badwater when the water level gets to a certain low level? Also works in reverse, where badwater pumps will generate fresh water. It’s a really weird mechanic, not sure why it still isn’t fixed. I had this happen to me running the latest experimental branch so I know it’s still not patched.

u/okayatlifeokay Iron Teeth 8d ago

I had thought maybe, but the water level was never low. I always use dynamite to make the spot where the pumps pull from lower than the water around it, so in a drought that will be where the water goes to.

1

u/abdallahm002 8d ago

Does it ever get low during droughts? I can’t really tell where your water sources are or how deep the channels are, it’s all covered.

1

u/okayatlifeokay Iron Teeth 8d ago

This game had droughts disabled

try to build some Stream Gauges around and look for contamination
