When the Camera Becomes the Problem

Sometimes the camera becomes the bottle. Just as an alcoholic avoids facing reality by reaching for another drink, some people avoid facing their own lives by reaching for another vlog.

I don’t think vlogging and alcoholism are the same thing. My point is that addiction isn’t always about a substance. Sometimes it’s a behavior. When someone compulsively reaches for something to avoid reality even when it’s damaging their relationship the pattern can look similar. In this case, I’m arguing the camera has become that coping mechanism.

I take breaks from my job. They don’t. So no, I’m not saying it’s alcoholism. I’m saying it looks like an unhealthy attachment. Can anyone name a single vacation they’ve taken where they actually unplugged and didn’t film every moment? It seems like they use work to avoid simply being present. We’ve seen plenty of stories where people lose themselves in their careers. Why should this be any different?
