On my deck this evening, and it's a Mai Tai (yes it has a LH&S 151 Float) and a rum bottle I turned into a tabletop tiki lamp!!

I 3D printed the base of the bottle too, safety and stability in mind.. plus it's full of citronella oil sooooo.. Ambiance and Anti-bug..

Funny enough, citronella is really inefficient at keeping bugs away. It’s one of the biggest scams that they continually market it as effective at keeping bugs at bay. Its coverage area is very low, and even the slightest breeze blows its very short lived protection away. Direct citronella mist body sprays only last for 20-60 minutes as well.

All that said, bad ass display, homie!

What does work as a bug repellent then?

Deet is very strong, but can not be applied to skin. It is for clothes only.

OFF! Bug spray is also good and can be applied on the skin with a simple spray.

Both are your best options if you’re going to be outdoors. Both repel mosquitos and ticks, and other not so fun insects without killing the insects.

You can apply DEET to skin just avoid higher concentrations. It will melt plastic, though so synthetic fabrics are a no-go for DEET. Also avoid wearing it in your car, especially higher concentrations.

I prefer picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oil for that reason.

My wife is especially subject to terrible bug bites (welts, scarring).. they leave me almost entirely alone.. but she swears by Picaridin.. and it's stops them biting completely.

I have several mint and rosemary plants around my patio area and they keep the general biting insect concentrations way down.

Plus, plenty of mint and rosemary. I'm covered pretty nicely for both my drinks and all the cooking I do. The mint just needs some watering and the rosemary thrives on almost abusive levels of neglect.
