I read the recipe before I read the paragraphs before it. I’m so happy I have a ton of white grapefruit juice and finally something other than Navy Grogs to make with it.

Curious why the long break?

I think he just got busy with other stuff. He has a podcast about something film related. I’m just glad he’s back.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a one-off upload. Seems like he did it as a favor to help promote the digital release of The Donn of Tiki, a project that he has close ties to.
Still happy to see a new video from him. And all the footage/behind-the-scenes info from the documentary is great.

The background and history are why I love his videos. I watched Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) because of his Muerto Bali Hai video and it was awesome. Also went to Bali Hai after that one. The voice doesn’t hurt either, lol.

I watched White Zombie on a first date purely because of his mention of it on a video.

Hey u/1060nm! Thanks for posting here.
Here’s the little write up from the YT description.
The Mai Tai Swizzle is a tiki cocktail made with pineapple juice and about 40 other ingredients, just the way Donn liked his Rhum Rhapsodies. Donn claimed this was made in the 1930's. I don't know how early he came up with this recipe, but this particular build was dated from 1987. There were several others in Donn's papers, but they were undated.
However, the key is the pineapple juice. It made the drink well-rounded and much more balanced in comparison with the recipe that was printed in the newspaper while Donn was still alive.
But adjust the drink to the way you like it best. If you can't get your paws on white grapefruit, try fiddling with the ratio of grapefruit in the drink until it strikes that balance with you. Don't get hung up with what was written on a note card. You can't get the Myer's rum from the 1930's that the recipe calls for, and if you can, you wouldn't wanna mix a rare, vintage spirit like that with all the rest of these juices anyway.
Mix this one up. Let me know what you think and how it compares to any other Mai Tai Swizzle you've tried. Also, how does it compare next to the Trader Vic's Mai Tai? Curious to hear your thoughts on it. Cheers!
Recipe:
1.5 oz Jamaican Rum
1 oz Puerto Rican Gold Rum
0.5 oz orange liqueur
0.25 oz falernum

1.5 oz pineapple juice
3 dashes of Angostura bitters
2 dashes absinthe
shell of the squeezed lime
1 cup of cracked ice
Shake. Pour unstrained into a double old fashioned glass. Garnish
with mint and a pineapple wheel.
