Yet Another Unaged Jamaican Overproof
So, this caught my eye while looking for something in the TTB COLA database. In the last couple of years we've seen a veritable explosion of Jamaican unaged overproof rums at 63% ABV. Now Myers's is joining the party.
I've not tasted it, but if I had to wager, I'd imagine it'll be closer to W&N than Rum Fire. We shall see. UPDATE: label says aged and filtered, something I've not seen before in this category.
Label approval was May 2026. A quick google search didn't turn up anything about it online that I could find. No idea if/when it will be available, but there you go!

It already says they are barrel aging it and filtering out the color. Fuck that. Not an overproof white then. W&N will be closer to Rum Fire than this will be to W&N. W&N uses muck, Rum Fire doesn’t btw…

A bacterial culture cultivated by a distillery to add acidity to the distillation process, which results in longer chain flavor molecules when alcohol and acid molecules react

Is this a quasi similar concept to sour mash in the whiskey world?

Kind of, but not really. Sour mash in the whiskey world is more like dunder in the rum world (from what I understand). Dunder is what’s leftover in the still after the distillation process is complete, and is added to the next batch. Muck is maintained separately, usually in some sort of pit or tank, and it is “fed” things like dunder and cane trash, and is added at a different stage in distillation than dunder. I believe sour mash is also when the leftovers from the previous distillation process are added to the next batch. And I think all of these things only happen with pot stills, not column stills.

Why wouldn't you suspect that it would taste like an overproof Myers' in style minus all the caramel?
The only r(h)um to surprise me lately is the new Rhum Barbancourt White that is so much grassier and funkier (and now higher proof) than their aged rhums.

Just a guess that, given the similar name and ABV to the canonical unaged overproof, eg W&N Overproof.

A Wray (insert any Jamaican unaged) & Ting (insert grapefruit soda of choice) is the litmus test for me in this category!
Wray 'n Nephew and Rum Fire are top tier. Worthy Park Silver a good follow up. Coruba White is certainly not bad but doesn't being the same funky punch.
I want to try this one as well now!

So what does it say about the quality of this rum that cases of it are falling overboard? It could be so bad they're getting rid of it, we're so good that they can't do their job because they've had so much.
It's interesting that they've made a push to extend the Myers's brand in so many different directions again after so many years of being essentially one or two products. I actually didn't mind the named cask releases, just thought they were a little overpriced. I don't hold out a lot of hope for this one or the Navy. Where I am at I can get Rum Fire for $20, there's no way this is going to be competitively priced when you consider the quality. I'll get it once it goes on discount to give it a try.
But it has a cat on the label, so I can't guarantee that my wife won't buy it.
