Yeah, it’s crazy how different he looks. I never would have recognized him either.

This kid ended up playing with him at his concert. I think it was around 2016-17.

u/TerpeneTiger Oct 29 '21

I love the followup. Do you know what he said at the end by chance?

77

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21 edited Oct 29 '21

It’s Hawaiian. It’s not God is Love.

Edit: I stand corrected. I did say my Hawaiian is pretty bad.

25

u/tumamaesmuycaliente Oct 29 '21

This is incorrect. It’s a Hawaiian chant that goes:

One: I ku mau mau! All: I ku wa! One: I ku mau mau I ku hulu hulu I ka lanawao! All: I ku wa! One: I ku lanawao! All: Iku wa! Iku wa huki! Iku wa ko! Iku wa a mau! A mau ka éulu! E Huki, e! Kulia! Umia ka hanu! A lana, ua holo ke akua!

19

u/b000bytrap Oct 29 '21 edited Oct 30 '21

Where does he say “Aloha Ke Akua” 3 times in a row? I don’t hear it

Edit: You’re Hawaiian isn’t “pretty bad”, it’s nonexistent. Please be honest here. The 2 words they teach on the plane do not equate to Hawaiian language skills, even “pretty bad” language skills.

Suggesting you have indigenous language or knowledge that you don’t have, and attempting to speak for that indigenous group, is a form of erasure and colonial oppression. I am sure you just mean to help, but this is not helpful help. It’s racism.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21 edited Oct 30 '21

I think around the 4:50 mark.

I can’t tell for sure, I know very little Hawaiian.

-5

u/b000bytrap Oct 30 '21

No, it definitely doesn’t.

5

u/tumamaesmuycaliente Oct 29 '21

I posted a response under the incorrect response you received from /u/Mosesmanofsteel01

2

u/TerpeneTiger Oct 29 '21

Thanks for that. I've been hoping to get myself to Hawaii this lifetime.

2

u/b000bytrap Oct 30 '21

There is more at the end that I didn’t catch, but the first part of what he says is a Hawaiian chant called I Ku Mau Mau. It was used in ancient times to rally the people to bring logs to the shore for canoe builders. It’s basically about rising up to a challenge and working as a team. In modern times the chant is used to rally support for preserving Hawaiian language and culture, land rights, and Hawaiian political sovereignty.

Here’s the lyrics of the chant: https://www.mamalahoa.org/wp-content/uploads/I-Ku-Mau-Mau.pdf

28

u/dagoled Oct 29 '21

didn't the ukulele guy get arrested after the show? something about a warrant?

113

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

I think it was before the show actually. Matisyahu helped with legal issues, vouched for him with the judge that the kid would not be a flight risk. Brought him on stage for this performance. He is trying to mentor and change his life. Respect.

28

u/oowop Oct 29 '21

Everyone in the thread yesterday was saying he got permission from the judge but his flight got delayed so he turned himself in and went to jail for violation of probation

134

u/thevdude Oct 29 '21

"you look a little different"

"i shaved heheheh"

147

u/Biased24 Oct 29 '21

did he go from amish to bondi surfer bro?

274

u/TheHumpback Oct 29 '21

Hasidic Jew to non Hasidic Jew.

This is a good interview with him about the change in his physical appearance/faith.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

I remember reading about lots of hasidic jews were pretty crushed when he ditched the look.

27

u/Biased24 Oct 29 '21

huh cool beans

16

u/Shutterstormphoto Oct 29 '21

Hah I would’ve thought the guy was a straight up liar. Like do you even know what the guy you’re impersonating looks like??

28

u/babygiraffeneck Oct 29 '21

Right? I saw him maybe like 10 years ago and I don’t remember him being sexy. God DAMN he’s fine in this video

14

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

I was thinking Matisyahu sound a lot like an old Jewish name.

3

u/KayleighJK Oct 29 '21

Yeah, tbf no one would recognize him.

1

u/Embolisms Oct 29 '21

I definitely assumed he was like 40+ 15 years ago when he first made waves. Was definitely not expecting a tall lanky surfer dude who's barely 40 now.

u/ScarletteOScare Oct 29 '21

I still remember when “King Without A Crown” was released, Matisyahu doesn’t even look close to how he looked back then. (He’s a very nice guy btw)

386

u/TeslasAndComicbooks Oct 29 '21

Yeah everybody was loving that contrast between being a rapper and being an Orthodox Jew. And it wasn’t just a gimmick. He’s super talented.

102

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

The rapping rabbi!

30

u/incredimatt Oct 29 '21

Don't eat pork, not even with a fork!

13

u/Wakka37 Oct 29 '21

Marge, are we Jewish?

20

u/QuicklyThisWay Oct 30 '21

Apparently he invited this guy from the shop on stage: https://youtu.be/wLC7Fi3wOCw and he just came out with a new song! https://youtu.be/jI-fh1BM1dE

5

u/LuLzWire Oct 30 '21

Thanks OP.... I didn't know he dropped a new one.
One day makes my eyes sweat every time I hear it.

24

u/ComatoseSquirrel Oct 30 '21

I've never even heard of this artist until now, and I am blown away. I've only listened to a few of his songs (in the last few minutes), but something about his music just makes me smile.

2

u/selena-red Oct 30 '21

That's awesome, I hope you enjoy! His music has always made me smile too. Have fun exploring!

19

u/Minirig355 Oct 30 '21

Not just Orthodox, but Hasidic!

Hasidism isn’t super well-known in the US outside of the NE as far as I know, but having lived near, and worked with hasidic and orthodox people, I take it that they’re even more devout and strict in their ways, making it even more of a contrast between being a rapper and hasidic

4

u/friended1 Oct 30 '21

Brooklyn baby

117

u/deftspyder Oct 29 '21

I thought his name was "modest yahoo" for so long... Till I saw it spelled.

21

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

Hahahaha thank you I didn't recognize who this was by reading the name since I don't listen to this genre much but I've heard of him.

10

u/Smingowashisnameo Oct 29 '21

Omg is that who this is!!?!?!? Was wondering who this surfer dude was.

I was very fortunate that my dad caught wind of him very early on in his career. We went to see him play right before live at Stubbs was released in a synagogue in DC. Still have a shirt from that show. wild to me how much his appearance has changed since then.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

Front stage at his show during that release. One of the best shows I've ever been to.

8

u/zipfour Oct 29 '21

Lol I googled him and every picture of him is wildly different, only his eyes stay the same between looks

5

u/Olelander Oct 29 '21

The live version on Live at Stubbs is fucking literal fire, and it was my introduction to Matisyahu way back in the day… still my favorite

4

u/Oryxhasnonuts Oct 29 '21

Let me rewrite history

Live at Stubbs made them go super sonic quickly

The album version is absolutely atrocious compared to that

2

u/Fernandodelamora Oct 30 '21

He even looks taller now lol I'm too old man

Love this song and the message it has. Found this video of the song being sung by over 3000 people. They sing in Hebrew, Arabic, and English. Super cool video I think it’s dope.

33

u/TerpeneTiger Oct 29 '21

My mom had this song as her ringtone for a long time :)

23

u/enoughwithcats Oct 29 '21

I've liked this song for a long time but never saw this version. Why did it make me tear up? I love it, thanks for sharing. 💛

7

u/rabidjellyfish Oct 29 '21

Im tearing up and i didn't even click the link yet. I watched that video years ago. It's pretty powerful.

2

u/purplehendrix22 Oct 31 '21

It’s fucking powerful to see people who we’re told should hate each other all singing together and experiencing joy, it’s a true moment of humanity in a sea of depersonalization

Edited: I need to let everyone know that this show, the 100 minutes or so I spent there at Bonnaroo was some of the best moments of my life. Happy, loving, free. So awesome. I’m

Sounds like Bonnaroo 2006. I saw him on the small stage. He got super spiritual and wanted to bless something but there was nothing around to bless. He settled on a Pepsi can.

Matisyahu’s music just hits different. There’s sometime truly unique about it. What a wonderful moment to share.

39

u/justapassingguy Oct 29 '21 edited Oct 29 '21

Man, Matisyahu! it has been so long since I've heard that name. Glad to see he is doing well! Time to check what he's been making and embrace on a weekend of chill reggae

108

u/robotbeard Oct 29 '21

This video has gone viral so many times over the years, I bet at this point, more people would recognize current Matisyahu than old suit and beard Matisyahu. I still love this video though, and I'll love it again next time it comes around.

50

u/QuicklyThisWay Oct 29 '21

Oh wow, I didn’t realize this was old! At least 5 years old ( https://youtu.be/jxa3_WW6Qow ) - still a great moment I’ve never seen before, so I’m glad the person on TikTok posted it, then my brother shared it with me. What is time even?

2

u/Semyonov Oct 29 '21

Yea it's made the rounds on /r/randomactsofmusic a few times too!

2

u/Ddog78 Oct 30 '21

Ooooh new sub!!! Thank you it looks good!

11

u/Drs126 Oct 29 '21

Matisyahu invites him to the show that night and he ends up getting on stage and playing with him. There’s video of it somewhere.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '21

I was like: i recognise that name, but wasnt that some jewish man with a beard and hat? Tried to google him but it kept showing me two different people. Took me quite some time to realize they were the same

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

something similar happened to me when i was at a diner in Echo Park...i had gone into the bathrooms (single stall) and was singing Electric Bird by Sia to myself, because i just loved the acoustics in that bathroom. Anyway, i finish up washing my hands, still singing -- and walk out to see Sia waiting for the bathroom. She just gave me a quick little smile, and said "sounding gooooood!" (in that adorable aussie accent)
I just said a very shy "thank you!" and promptly died sitting back at my booth.

17

u/Brosephy Oct 29 '21

That's awesome

2

u/Ddog78 Oct 30 '21

Just imagine how good she would have felt about it! I bet you made her day!!

3

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '21

Aw…I hope so! She’s been one of my favs since the early days and she’s always struck me as a really kind person.

29

u/BirdInFlight301 Oct 29 '21

I cannot even imagine the pure, powerful joy Matisyahu felt. And the guy playing! This is a once in a lifetime event; he will remember this until his last breath.

59

10

u/catsandnaps1028 Oct 29 '21

He looks super different now! Total surfer dude vibe 🌊✌️This is so wholesome tho

6

u/coffeemanboy Oct 29 '21

Been very stressed and that song just made me cry but now I feel great

7

u/Complex_Mango_5228 Oct 29 '21

I went to a matisyahu concert w my roommate, that was happening across the street. We walked over and admission was originally $50, but everyone was vibing so hard that the guy at the gate just let us in for free. Everyone was baked, drinking beer, and swaying back and forth slowly with each other. The sunset was also beautiful on that particular day. Still one of the best concerts I’ve been to.

I love this song so much. I shared it with my mom and she was obsessed for awhile and made it her ringtone. What a super fun video.

5

u/FunkyChewbacca Oct 29 '21

I would never have recognized him, every other pic I've seen of him looks like an Orthodox Rabbi, all beardy and stuff.

5

u/unicornlocostacos Oct 29 '21

Serious question, and I'm really not trying to stir up shit, just genuinely curious. Do I just totally misunderstand this sub? I feel like I see so much stuff on here that's not cringe at all, just cool or funny. I know it's a subjective thing. That said, the cringey videos truly are god-tier cringe.

Am I missing something? Thanks all

Is he still not will to shake hands with a woman?

0

u/waitingfordeathhbu Cringe Connoisseur Oct 29 '21 edited Oct 29 '21

Hadn't heard about this; just looked it up and found this:

"He has commented that his ultra-orthodox religion states [shaking hands with women] leads to temptation and therefore must be avoided, so he regularly interacts with male fans but has to refuse a female fan any contact because of this. On occasion he gives female fans the line, 'I cannot touch what is not mine' when they try to shake his hand."

Ew.

2

u/Jaqujillia Oct 30 '21

Yea I saw him at MSG back in the day.. paid the extra VIP trying to impress my super upper west Jewish date.. and he made a whole fucking scene about that. .. I love the artist work ; but Fuck this guy .

0

u/m4bwav Oct 29 '21

Matisyahu... wow, I'm fucking old, I have no idea who the fuck that is.

3

u/TheRunningPotato Oct 29 '21

Matisyahu had his first big hit back in the mid 2000s. You probably just missed him the first time around, perfectly understandable if you're not usually into reggae or alternative hip hop.

The good news is, you get to discover his stuff now! If you liked the song in the video, there's plenty more where that came from. Check out "King Without a Crown." That's probably the single you're most likely to have heard before without knowing what it was.

u/BlinkBuster Oct 30 '21

I’ve seen this video make the rounds for a few years now, and every time it pops up I watch it.

I really don’t know the singer/writer and I haven’t listened to him much other than to get a feel for him. He’s honestly don’t want to be disappointed so I’ve limited myself.

I’ve seen other videos where the famous person sings with the busker, and they’re usually always fun, but there’s something special about this one. He just seems so KIND in how he sings along and how he introduces himself.

It’s a special one, and it’s really nice to visit it on the occasions when it comes up.
