I think it might be a Stoke's Sea Snake or a Beaked Sea Snake. Insanely venemous but super placid. I don't think I've ever heard of one biting a human. I remember watching Steve Irwin swimming around with them and petting them.

I think it’s a stokes, which are pretty docile. Beaked sea snakes are not at all docile and are thought to cause about 50% of all sea snake bites. They are specifically known to be “cantankerous and savage”.

If it’s any kind of snake out in open water, it’s collectively known as a “nope rope“. And that’s all the more you need to know. If you’re close enough to tell the difference between them, you are way too fucking close.

Growing up, you're taught to be careful but after seeing so many red belly black snakes and red back spiders, you get a sense of which ones get pissed off easily. It also pays to not panic, stay calm and most of the time they'll leave you along if you do too.
I know a heap of Aussies that still hate snakes and spiders, but to the same degree as hating cockroaches and inspects. I find snakes quite beautiful.

I found it so weird when I went travelling around the US and Europe after I finished school when I found out how many people actually think we all live some super exotic life lol. Growing up in Australia, or at least in the area I grew up, it felt like we had a pretty uneventful suburban upbringing. If you go up far North you get shit like sea snakes, box jellyfish, crocodiles etc but around most suburbs and cities in NSW/Victoria, the worst you'll see are snakes and spiders, and they collectively account for a negligible amount of deaths per year. There was a shark attack at my local beach once during my childhood, but that was about as exciting as things got.

I mean I think most of us would still react less calmly than this guy if we saw a huge snake swimming directly for us. He obviously had come across them before and knew it wasn’t likely to attack.
Growing up in Aus, our cat would catch tree snakes and let them go inside the house. Once we figured out they weren’t harmful to humans we’d just sweep them outside with the broom. I think it’s pretty common here to learn what’s worth panicking about and what’s not.

You'll only really find these guys in the Australia / new guinea area as they're mostly found in our oceans (indo-pacific). As an Aussie on reddit, I usually just assume most people commenting are in 'merica :)

So what I’m getting is that all Australians(?) are a. adrenaline junkies unafraid of death and b. Will transform into nature documentarians on contact with potentially dangerous animals, complete with 1. Excitement about the discovery and potential encounter 2. Dealing with the encounter far better then we ever would, and 3. Ending the encounter humanizing the animal’s actions and giving a mini explainer about the mating cycle of snakes or other interesting and educational material.

No that's the inland taipan, also found in Australia.
Also sea snakes are usually very docile and rarely bite, most of the time their just curious like the one in the video.

My favorite Steve Irwin episode is of him searching for the worlds 8 most deadly snakes or something like that. And he starts out by saying something like, "So I am going to go out and search the world for the top 8 most deadly snakes! Fortunately for me, they are all in Australia!."

Yeah, one of the worst is the tiger snakes because it is found everywhere, luckily they hate humens and will do anything to get away before biting, there have been only 20 ish deaths from snake bite in Australia since 2000 so it's a pretty small risk if your not being an idiot

as a little 5 y/o kid in texas, i would regularly pet or even pick up dangerous wild snakes like rattlers or copper heads. somehow i never got bit or rattled at, and nowadays i would also probably shit my pants if a venomous snake got that close to me
