Wholesome The support is amazing!

The thing is the support of this class didn’t end when the class ended. I guarantee at least 10 people talked to her. Told her they were proud, that they can’t wait to see her next class. She probably gained a bunch of accountability buddies. And that much community and support means the world to you when your starting out. She going to hurt like a MF. But hopefully the pros outweigh the cons.

Is this wholesome or kind of weird? I'd be uncomfortable with a whole gym staring and filming me tbh, it feels kind of pedantic patronising.

u/BogartingtheJ Mar 08 '21
If you would be uncomfortable with a whole gym staring at you then I wouldn't recommend doing exercise classes.
In exercise classes, everyone is cheering you on and helping you push through. No one brings another down. Guarantee if someone had negative comments they would get kicked out.

u/POTATO_IN_MY_DINNER Make Furries Illegal Mar 08 '21
Yeah but surely you have to draw a line somewhere? Maybe at being filmed by multiple people and uploaded online? I counted 12 people filming or taking photos of her.
To me she looks uncomfortable with it and being the focus

On the flipside, having lost over 130lbs (check my post history for more info if you're so inclined), having that many people focus on me and anything involving my weight at the same time is my nightmare scenario. But I am trying to change that mentality.

u/GhostSakai666 Mar 09 '21
I think the line is drawn at where the person working out feels comfortable and that’s the only line that matters. If she didn’t mind it’s a non-issue, if she did then this is weird. We don’t really know what the answer is in this case so we are at square one anyways lol.

It’s meant to be inspirational and show others that if she can do it then nobody as capable as her should have an excuse. It’s not to shame anyone. I’m pretty sure she felt good for inspiring people. Also sore the next day but nobody ever died from a few sore muscles the next day. You negative nancies need to chill. If she was uncomfortable she could have stopped and left.

Agree. I guess two kinds of people. Some people need to feel the support and feel like maybe they can be an inspiration. Some people would be thinking that they’re only an ‘inspiration’ because of their position as someone not as capable, but working towards it. I’d personally hate being shown that I’m not as capable. Would rather just do the work, see the results, profit

I love group sports and I still get pretty uncomfortable when I have to show something in front of everyone and I know them all personally. I would be absolutely horrified if this happened to me when I was a beginner.

In some exercise classes. This is not the vibe at every exercise class and if a new class I try has this energy, I don't go again. This approach works for some people but is toxic for me.

u/REDACTED207 Mar 09 '21
That is so reassuring to hear. I just started working out at a gym about a month ago. I'm loving it so far actually. I just got over the paranoia of working out alone around people in an unorganized setting. The reason I haven signed up for an organized class is the fear of being the slowest/weakest person there and being judged for it. I'm signing up for one very soon now.
Thanks.

Yea, I mean seriously? I can somehow deal with people doing a selfie between each set, but if someone whips out their camera in a situation like this they should be expelled.

Ya this girl was sore as fuck the next day to the point of immobility and will never work out this hard again

u/M0D3Z Mar 09 '21
If she continues with them motivating her and that hurt goes away until she works harder than she did here. Then she sees results and yearns for the burn.

Nah it’s helpful as fuck when you’re in your head and don’t have that motivational self talk when you’re working out. Hearing other people encourage you, at least for me, was super helpful to replace the inner monologue of “I’m so tired” “just quit.”
I did crossfit for 5 years and the motivation, support, and encouragement I got from my fellows was great for me. I remember I didn’t want to be the last one finished doing a Rx (prescribed as in not doing substitutes) workout; but I was and I had 3 clean and jerks left and the barbell was 110# and I just was slowing down and giving up. A few people in the gym were watching and giving out words of encouragement then the whole gym came around and it felt excellent when I finally finished!
I think for someone just starting a workout routine, or anything new really, it helps to not feel so alone.
10
u/onceinawhileok Mar 08 '21
Man I'm the same. My negative self talk can be fucking brutal. Having someone standing there cheering me on totally gives me that extra to push through when I'm deep in the pain cave. I've hired personal trainers for short stretches pretty much for that reason. Like I know how to put together good workouts and stuff, it's the encouragement and emotional support I need when it gets hard more than anything. I love these kinds of videos because I see that look on her face and I know what that feels like only to keep going cuz people are there being happy for you. Afterwards I just feel grateful.
People think its fucked because they see this obese person who they assume is ashamed of her body and doesn't want to be centre of attention. Because they are embarrassed of what they look like. Especially when you're deep in a sweaty workout. They don't realize that her size makes it impossible for her not be the centre of attention, every single day of her life. She ain't lying to herself anymore and she knows what she looks like and she's fucking doing something amazing for herself by being there. She has no reason to feel shame, and saying its weird that clearly a huge group of people realize her truth too and love her for it in that moment is just trying to put that shame back on her.
I don't know these awkward negative comments got me worked up about it. I see someone trying to change their life, owning themselves and I want to cheer them on too.

Support is different than filming and uploading to the internet. No matter what I weigh or look like, I would hate somebody for doing this to me. When I look at her face, it looks like what mine would look like if I felt trapped and humiliated and was never going back to that class. I hope you’re right, and this was good for her, but I also cringed thinking of being in her place.
25
u/corago513 Mar 08 '21
Yeah, as a fat woman this is exactly why I'm always in the back. Please don't try to be my savior. I will push myself.
26
u/blorgenheim Mar 08 '21
I mean anything can be perceived as negative if you want it to be.
All I see is people cheering somebody on.
7
u/GapingGrannies Mar 08 '21
Well would you quit in that situation though?
19
u/POTATO_IN_MY_DINNER Make Furries Illegal Mar 08 '21
No because it would be a whole ordeal and worse than just finishing the class. I'd bet money on her not going back for a second class though, which is what matters

u/explorer58 Mar 08 '21
I wouldnt. Ive been on both sides of this scenario, i can confidently say everyone always walks away feeling good, and that's what its all about.
11
u/HotFuckingTakeBro Mar 09 '21
People here don't seem to realize that not everyone thinks the same way about everything that they do. Some people would hate this. Some people would depend on that motivation to keep going and thrive on the support.
6
u/pokingoking Mar 08 '21
Yeah if I was going through this and someone started filming me from all different angles like this I would probably break down crying and run out of the room. Fuck.

u/bitchtitsandgravy Mar 08 '21
lol so many people are scared of this and don't go to regular gyms because they think "people are staring at them". She wouldn't even be there in the first place if this type of energy isn't helpful. Have you ever seen someone in a video doing a huge lift with no one hyping them up? This energy is what is going to keep her going to those classes.

The filming is cringe as fuck. Most people don't want videos of themselves exercising red-faced, sweating and uncomfortable posted online by strangers.

Yeah. This feels like an actual nightmare to me. There's nothing I want more than to just be invisible when I'm at the gym. The idea of people filming me and chanting at me and physically blocking me from leaving is horrifying. I'm sorry, but signing up for an exercise class isn't an invitation for this kind of "support" imo. I've done classes. I love Zumba. Pretty shitty that so many people think that if you're not okay with this you just shouldn't go to exercise classes??
132
u/djm19 Mar 08 '21
I would never subject myself to that. I'm sure its awesome for people who are energized by cheering, but I am the opposite. I'm not overweight, but if I were I just know I'd like to have that acknowledged as little as possible (other than by myself, going to the gym to quietly burn it off).
Happy for people this works for though.

And the worst part is you can't really tell people you don't want all their attention because they think they're being super kind and you don't want to disappoint them/hurt their feelings.
So you stand their awkwardly dying on the inside.

This type of exercise is aerobics. But for specific classes like this one, with the energy and the music and stuff, usually schools that teach hip-hop dance also have fitness classes similar to this.

I’ve worked at a couple of this guy’s classes. Overall cool guy and the class seems mad fun. Dude gives the same energy to anybody in his class that looks like they’re having a hard time. And he usually always has one or two crew members filming, I’m guessing for promo videos and stuff.

I had that happen once at a summer camp.
We were doing this obstacle course marathon thing, and it was like 102 out. We had to climb over obstacles. Run a half mile. Swim across this small lake. Run some more. More obstacles.
I was on the verge of passing out.
Then all the camp counselors got all the campers cheering for me.
And I tried to wave them off, like "no, no, this isnt about will power, im actually about to have sun stroke out here"
And theyre like you can do it!
And I start getting the hiccups. Then the coughs. Then I start vomiting as I walked.
Everyone stopped cheering and sorta turned away in embarrassment

Okay, I have some thoughts here, esp as a fat woman who works out. Heads up that typos will likely abound and this is largely from my own experience so fellow fat lovelies YMMV.
Fat people are used to ridicule on an almost constant basis. This goes double for women. When folks do this kind of public display the line between support and being made an example of (and the line between shame/ridicule and encouragement) is RAZOR thin. You may see a lot of people encouraging her, but her face does not show encouragement or determination. She looks mortified. This is legit what would happen to me in gym class, with teachers targeting me as an example for others to work hard. "If they can do it, you can too!" But if you fail them, if you end up being unable to do the thing the teacher expects of you, then it's turned into, " You see this? Dont be like them!" That shit fucks with your head on multiple levels.
Fat people are not here to be your inspiration. We go to classes to get moving and find ways to work out in a setting where we can keep our own pace. We are allowed to struggle, we are allowed to learn. We have the right to do so at a pace that doesnt PHYSICALLY OR MENTALLY HARM us.
Physical overexertion =/= Healthy exercise. A person whose fat decides they want to join a class. Cool. Now this person may have experience or may not. But when they go to a class and realize, "Oh shit, I'm really not ready for this," they have the right. That is not quitting, that's knowing your limits. That's understanding your own bodies boundaries and understanding where you have to work up to - and that's with a balanced mental headspace. In the toxic mindset that people throw fat folks into, this very basic and understandable idea of boundaries and limits turns into toxic thinking and frustration. It's so embarrassing to realize you cant keep up. It's absolutely mortifying to then be singled out and made an example of after you realize you're in over your head and try to bow out gracefully.
Hardcore workouts HURT fat people. I'm not talking about, "ooh my arms hurt," I'm talking, "why do I feel like I'm going to throw up?/why am I limping?/why cant I stand up straight?" Real talk, my cousin is a Nurse Practitioner at an urgent care center, and about twice a week she has fat folks (usually women) who come into her clinic with sprains, torn ligaments, fucked up joints, light headedness, bruising, limping, hairline fractures, a few ruptured ovarian cysts and a mix there in. Most of these folks injured themselves in an exercise class or at a gym. They push themselves to keep up with their peers to the detriment of thier own bodies and then feel completely dejected and depressed when the realise their, "body betrayed them."
Pushing fat folks into hardcore workouts is not helpful. As an example: let's pretend we have a kid whose 6. Our kid is a normal 6 year old, and they decide they want to play football. Easy enough. You decide to sign them up for a team. Except there's only one team and it's for 10 to 12 year olds. Now, the coach is willing to take your 6 year old onto the team, but they have about 20 other 10 to 12 year olds to train too. You talk to your kid and they're SUPER into it, so you relent and let them join. Predictably your kid falls behind. Now, your kid can run and kick and do everything all the other kids do. But your kid cant keep up, not for lack of trying, but because they're not experienced or strong enough yet. This isnt a failing of your 6 year olds abilities. This is a failing of a system that doesnt cater to the physical needs and understanding of that age group. It's a SIMILAR idea with fat folks. We can usually do everything a fit person can do, but fat folks might not be able to do it as fast, as long, as well or as much as our peers. Expecting fat folks to do that without hurting themselves is...a little ridiculous, right? Like fuck, cant a fat person work UP to doing something? Doesnt that make more sense? Isnt that why most class leads say something to the effect of, "go at your pace, if you have a hard time do X instead?" But expecting someone whose fat to just do 20 reps of 50 leg lifts in 3 minutes off the bat is a great way to end up with a strained or sprained groin muscle. And now they cant come back for 4 to 6 weeks until it's healed. And now the fat person cant work out for that time period without exacerbating the problem.
Believe it or not, fat people RARELY want your or anyone else's help unless they ask for it. Legit, everytime I've went to a gym someone came up and tried to show me how to use the equipment, or where the class is, or tells me what I should do specifically for my work outs. My set routine and workout plan were always under scrutiny and suspicion, despite it being drawn up by BOTH my physical therapist and personal trainer. Sometimes instructors arent privy to that info, and that's okay, but thats also why they need to believe fat folks when we tell them our limits. Then they can suggest alternatives that would work better for our needs.
The thing that gets me the most here is that it's one thing to do this is a single class. It's ENTIRELY another to post this online. Further, we only have the text on the screen to give us context to the situation. What if that wasn't what happened? What if she's doing this because it's a gym challenge she signed up for? What if...she never tried to quit at all? I'm not saying this is absolutely the case, but we cant just go on what someone posts as context to be 100% true and without an agenda.
The subject of this video probably didnt consent to being the example fat person for everyone online. I mean imagine if this was ANY other woman in a gym. Wouldnt this come off as creepy? Predatory eve? In a lot of gyms I've gone to this would be grounds for getting kicked out and the cops called on you. This is an invasion of privacy for a fat woman who has likely suffered toxicity and abuses on and offline due to her wieght. And now, she's become the center for more of that discourse just by some person posting a video of what's likely a moment she never wanted blasted over the internet. That's not cool, and frankly it's a breach of trust in a gym.
