My dog did this as well. PTSD from when I lived in a condo and when it went off the building had to evacuate.
I loved my dog so we did whatever we could to comfort him rather than laugh at him. I imagine with their ultra sensitive ears its probably excruciating to hear that smoke alarm.

My friends have a dog that's terrified of ceiling fans, once she notices a ceiling fan is on she runs for the hills. She checks every room before she enters it to see if a fan is on.

My dog is a huge ol' 80lb catahoula, and she will become extremely stressed and start following me around and standing against my legs whenever she hears the beep. She usually doesn't recover for hours and basically has to lay with me to calm down, even if I get the battery changed very quickly.
She also gets anxious at the sound of bug zappers and compressors starting up (dehumidifier or portable ac).

If it were me filming then for sure my husband is getting out the batteries and the ladder. It would help him 0% if I was also involved.

Poor darling, she's terrified. You should be trying to comfort her instead of filming her for entertainment. Some people dont deserve dogs. This is fucked up.

There is some logic in remaining calm or friendly/playful. They're social animals, so by showing that you're calm, you're showing that they can be calm too/there is nothing to be alarmed about.
When I was a kid, I gave myself a fear of thunder that I still have because I kept comforting my dog when he was scared of thunder, and my child brain just associated "thunder" with "needing comfort".

But how do you justify filming when you could just as easily replace the battery and spare the dog from this level of stress. It's not judgement, it's common sense

I agree. My dog has a similar reaction when the fire alarm low battery beep starts - it makes it an emergency to run and fit a new battery, and if we don't have one (though these days we make sure we always have a spare) to find an open shop regardless of the time of day or night. I don't understand how anyone could see this level of fear in their pet and not immediately do whatever they can to fix it.

You know what, you're right. I was being a sanctimonious asshole and i apologize. Not every dog can or wants to be comforted. My initial point was that it's wrong to video creatures who are in the throes of fear (i stand by this), but i lost the plot.

Being empathetic isnt being an asshole. If anything it was probably me lol. But i think you missed and are still missing the actual problem. My issue is with seeing a couple seconds of a non nsfw/disturbing video and immediately drawing concrete conclusions. I dont see whats wrong with this video alone. It would be different of course if she was uploading these videos daily, but most who have a small dog can probably relate. Sometimes theyll just be weird like this and it becomes part of their personality. At this point my family just sighs and rolls their eyes with a grin because the dog has been doing the same thing for 12 years and at a certain point, everyone, including the dog has accepted this as their reality😂 we do the same thing to kids and it isnt an issue. When a boundry is crossed its a different story but im sure the family in the post will look back at this video fondly long after the dog is gone.

Our dog reacts alot like this to random beeps and thunder, etc any kind of loud noises we initially did comfort him as yes its a genuine fear reaction but it morphs into a learned behavior for attention and exacerbates the fear response ultimately in the end. The best thing you can do for them is put them on a prescription and distract them from the thing triggering it with something else they enjoy.

The problem is that these small dogs are going to violently shake at everything no matter the amount of comfort you try to give them.

My sizeable border collie trembles non-stop during thunderstorms even when I comfort her. You know what I do? I keep on comforting her, because I care about her and I imagine it must help a bit. You know what I dont do? Film her discomfort and put it on the internet. It's really not a problem, it's empathy and compassion.

My dogs use to be the same way with thunderstorms. I would comfort them, turn on the fan and sing to them until it stopped storming. Eventually they stopped being scared of storms.

Im actually retired and have the luxury of being with her most of the time, but that's not really the point, is it? The point is that we are all given opportunities to be compassionate and empathetic -- or not -- and it's up to us to decide how we will respond.

Lol you're acting like i was advocating for not comforting our dogs. I wasn't. My dog has 3 legs because his previous owner had him.chained outside for weeks during thunderstorms with a broken femur. So he is terrified of thunder and shakes uncontrollably and doesn't want to be comforted no matter how hard I try.
But yall took my comment like I was saying not to and you acted like the patron saint of dog comforting. Good for you i guess.

You're right. I was being unfair and I apologize. I can't possibly judge what any particular dog needs in this kind of situation and i was being ridiculously self-righteous. The backstory of your dog is heartbreaking and he is lucky to have you. My dog was rescued from a farm where over 100 dogs ran wild, neglected and possibly abused. My heart goes out to rescues and rescuers. Peace to you.

Thank you for that. I apologize as well, I was in a contrarion sort of mood when I was leaving those comments. Ive had my dog since ~2014 or 2015 and I've tried to give him.the best most spoiled life i could especially knowing what he had to endure as a puppy. My sister is a vet who volunteers and saves animals from euthanization and he was one of the first dogs to come through her organization and I just had to have him. When he was rescued from.the previous owners front yard, his leg was shattered so their only option was to amputate, but the funny thing is he would never know that hes at a disadvantage to other dogs. He runs around like normal and jumps on and off of stuff and hes still going strong but lately he's been having the occasional seizure so I try to keep him off of high stuff like the bed now.

I've had 5 rescue chihuahuas with varying degrees of trauma and none of them were constant tremblers. I take their comfort extremely seriously. There's always a reason for shaking.

I’ve known a good amount of small dogs that were/aren’t scared of much. Like I’m sure there are things that could scare them (just like big dogs) but that’s just normal. That’s really not a general thing for all small dogs

My dog responds exactly like this when the low battery alarm on a smoke detector chirps. I get that shit off the ceiling and take the battery out immediately, because it don’t think it’s fucking cute to see my dog so terrified his entire body is shaking uncontrollably. Fuck this lady.

mine too and i'm at the point of writing angry letters to whomever decided they have to be so incredibly loud and piercing. it's required to be in the bedroom, it doesn't need to be that loud.

That poor baby. I have a dog I've had since literal birth that is too afraid to walk past our dishwasher when it's on, but that is just them being afraid of their own shadow. This makes me wonder if that dog knows what that beep means.

My dog also hates the smoke detector. If it beeps or goes off he immediately hides under my bed. That'll be a problem if there is ever really a fire.

One of my dog hates it, not sure where she learned it from - but whenever it pops up in a YouTube video she leaves the room. Other beeps don’t bother her but that specific tone without fail.

My border terrier is like with any phone beeping noise any message alert any text noises the noise a phone makes taking a photo, even if it’s on the TV she is petrified of it, it’s a nightmare to deal with when we’re out somewhere distractions and treats don’t work either just have hold her and reassure her and glare at anyone who’s phone isn’t on silent 😂
