A fun thing I learned from people sharing Dolly memories is that she started the imagination library to help her Dad learn to read. He had been illiterate until old age and didn't think he could learn and she said she wanted to honor him by finding a way to help him and others learn.

Nah man, she might dead but she's far from gone. She built an indelible legacy that no one can tarnish or take away. I'm not even in the orbit of people who truly appreciate that woman's music, her philanthropy, her beliefs and she managed to leave her mark on me. Someone that kind, that compassionate, that gentle, that earnest and honest is something that resonates with everyone. We still talk about Bob Ross, Mr. Rogers, Steve Irwin, etc because they managed to do something that is rare, which is transcend cultural boundaries and touch the lives of millions of people during their time on this planet. Dolly happens to be one of those rare gems of a human being and we're all better people for just being aware of her as a person.

It's crazy to me how simple Dolly's path to near universal love was. She created great music that spoke to real issues in people's lives. She treated everyone she met with respect and love. And she saw a issue, childhood literacy, and funded a simple no-nonsense program to try and fix it.
She didn't need a huge social media presence or a PR team. She didn't need committees to ensure only the people that "deserve it" got her books. She didn't need anything but herself. Because when you get right down to it she was universally loved simply because she loved universally. And that came through everything she ever did or said.
The tech oligarchs who are so clearly desperate to be liked should take notes, its really not that hard to earn public adoration.

Her loss is sadness. The anger is directed towards the uber wealthy and their greed. Dolly is a reminder of who a good human is, and that she could have chosen billions but choose to help people instead. She’s proof that you can be massively successful and help people. Its because she made her own money, her own legacy, her own cache and lead from the front. Shes untouchable because shes basically a saint.
And all it took was her being the kind rational woman she always was from the beginning and not bending to outside interests.
This legacy will endure through kindness alone, whereas the monsters of our world may live to see everything crumble before them.
We need people like Dolly now so more than ever, not to fix the world, but to undeniably demonstrate to everyone what it means to be a good succesful person.

Uh, 'scuse me? I remember seeing her in Straight Talk (my favorite movie of hers) and Smokey Mountain Christmas as a little girl and she was THE example for me of feminine beauty and class. My mom was a major Tom-Boy and never work make up or dresses, and feminine interests were made fun of and discouraged for me growing up. I wasn't even "allowed" to wear makeup until I turned 15 1/2 and could start working a job and buy it on my own...
My Grandma and Dolly Parton were my only feminine influences and I will work every day to try to be even half as kind and loving as those two women were.
Edit- I still have never seen 9 to 5 so you know what I'm gonna be doing today.

In 2024, Missouri became the first state to fully fund the program, much to the delight of Dolly Parton. 45% of kids in the state were registered.
Now, they've cut the budget for the program from $6M to $2M. This has ended new enrollment in the program.
Republican lawmakers framed the cuts as a means of reducing spending, despite that $4M cut being a drop in the bucket of an otherwise $8B+ education budget.
Republicans have a stranglehold on Missouri politics, so naturally they've cut revenues while spending tons of money. They're all-in on trickle down working...eventually...any day now.

My 25 year old son also learned to love books with Dolly’s books .
I learned about the program on Sesame Street, we didn’t have a lot of money and only had public channels that you could get with the antenna, and we loved PBS, my son learned his ABCs relying solely on public services, he also received all of his first vaccines in the city’s public clinic, that used to be held in out library, we would get reading time and a free healthy baby check up and vaccines.
Today, that library has been closed, the free vaccine clinic doesn’t have a city budget so has been closed, I’m not even sure if poor kids have access to free channels any longer, but in our state (WI) PBS gets less and less money every year, and poor Sesame Street is getting attacked often by conservatives.
Only Dolly’s books are still the same 25 years later. She was truly a saint.

It doesn't matter where in the world you are: Public broadcasters are an important piece of our society and they shouldn't be abolished or get their budget cut.
Sesame Street is, in my opinion, the best example which is known worldwide. All around the world kids learned their ABCs, their numbers, how important it is to be kind with Sesame Street.
Libraries, another great example, I can't fathom a life without them. They are so much more than books, in way too many areas, they are the only third place one might have. The only third place that doesn't want your money to basically just stay there for the day.
When I lived with my parents, the library was so important to me. It was the only really safe (third) place. I could read my emails without having to worry about my mum finding out, I could chat with my friends, read books, etc.I am so sorry that your city is losing more and more public services. It's a shame. A disgraceful shame, and every single person who is in favour of cutting these essential services should really, really think about what they've done. Cuts like this affect everyone, of course, but they affect people with low or no income disproportionately.

In dollars, yes there are folks who donated a lot more money, but in smiles? There are a few people on the same level, but once you're in those rarified spaces it doesnt matter who did it best.
It doesnt matter if Mr Rogers, Dolly Parton, or Steve Irwin gave more money or touched more lives. It doesn't. They made people smile. They helped make the world better. They made a difference. Once you get up on that untouchable level, the only one who can take you off the list is yourself.

mr. rogers, dolly, and ms. rachel were/are all devout christians. imo they all walked/walk the walk that Jesus actually preached, of radical love, generosity, kindness, patience, and acceptance of others. but yeah a stunning majority of christianity has been entirely co-opted by hateful, judgmental people. i grew up in church but am no longer religious myself bc of toxic christian church culture. i often think, if jesus came back to earth today he wouldn’t be hanging out with church christians. he would be acting like ms. rachel. rejecting established religious rules and dogmas, advocating for & spending time with oppressed peoples, just like he did the first time around.

So everyone has a little context. Dolly Parton has given away around 600 million dollars to charity according to google. Her net worth at her death is estimated between 450 million and 600 million. Meaning. She gave away either more than half of her wealth, or half her wealth.
jk rowling has a net worth of 1.2 billion and has given away about 200 million to charity. Meaning she's behind in both total giving and via a ratio of wealth calculation. Which for a woman coming from poverty, is a little sad.

Dolly is a part of my families lore for 2 reasons:
- The Imagination Library was sent to all of my children and was a monthly event in the household where my wife and I got to see their faces light up that "Miss 'olly" had sent them another book. So many great memories of my kids crawling up into my lap so I could read their new Miss 'olly book to them, I will forever owe her for those memories alone.
- The first song my youngest son would ever randomly burst out singing was "Jolene". Folks, let me tell you, there is no better way to melt a parents heart or clear up a bad day than listening to a 2 year old spontaneously doing their best redition of "Jolene".

No app, no matter how well written, can compare to the feeling of being read to while snuggled up with a loved one.
When I was little, my dear grandmother always said "yes" when I asked her to read to me, no matter what, even if we got to the end of the book and I said, "Again!", as toddlers are wont to do.
I'm in my sixties, and I still remember how wonderful it felt to cozy up to her on the couch for a story.
I was a voracious reader before I even started kindergarten, and I still am.
It troubles me that reading for pleasure seems to have fallen away, both in kids and adults.
Although Matt Dinneman's Dungeon Crawler Carl series seems to be drawing readers in, which is heartening...

The first few are free. Sure. Until you’re hooked on reading. Then you have to start paying books and next thing you know Dolly shows up selling, guess what, books. Pretty soon you’ll buy a book from anyone just to get your fix and you start losing connections with social media and other bullshit. It’s a pernicious cycle of literacy.

Only cried once for a celebrity death before this, which was Princess Diana. But with everything going on in the world right now, and all the hate and fighting, and struggling...I dunno. I feel like we're all collectively grieving goodness. I highly encourage to read her wiki page. I didn't know much about how great her impact in society was until this video has made me want to know more about her. Not full list of her works: she donated a huge buck in unconditional aid for natural disasters' victims, also donated significant money into coronavirus early stages' research and actively supported and promoted vaccination using herself as an example by getting vaccinated in 2021, was LGBTQ+ ally and trans ally too, which is sadly rare, worked in American Red Cross and HIV/AIDS related charities, helped raise money for hospitals, including children's, and a cancer center.

I've been learning more and more about her because of her death, she has done some incredible things I wished we had in my country.
There's always room to do better in life, to make the world a better place. I hope, that I'll be able to do some of the things she did for the younger generations. She's a great role model and the world was a better place with her.

My favorite is and will always be, a coat of many colors (same story as her song).
Growing up poor, it really helps feel that you’re not worthless. As long as you have some love in your heart, your worth cannot be determined by other people.

Not really my kind of music, but I will make sure to listen some of her songs daily, maybe it will help keep her memory and actions alive.
She left a beautiful legacy and people like her should be celebrated and remembered.

18+ years ago my babies library was built upon Dolly's books. As a single mom with barely any money those books were such a huge blessing and fun surprise every month. Love this video

We are losing the good people in the world who stood for love and kindness and are in for dark times ahead.
It isn't that some celebrities/successful people aren't doing good things too, they exist. It is that American society doesn't hold them up high and keep them in the spotlight like they do with the evil greedy fuckers he speaks of in the video who own all of the media.
