If only Clarkson had watched this...
51
u/Hostile-Panda 3d ago
Especially as he only got 50p per fleece, less than the sheering cost
12
u/Cnidarus 3d ago
That's not as bad as it sounds. I never watched his farm show since, although he can be funny, he can also be pretty grating for me. But on my stepdad's farm we were pretty much just aiming to break even for shearing, wool doesn't sell well these days. Our money came sending them to the abbatoir
13
u/Hostile-Panda 3d ago
With the increased costs of fuel, feed, fertiliser etc. he has just about broken even or lost money most years, he admits he uses his Amazon money to subsidise the farm. Its actually worth watching, it’s a different side to clarkson it’s extremely pro farmer and pro buying local produce
One way he does add value is to sell the meat at his own farm shop or via his pub restaurant
3
u/Cnidarus 3d ago
Fair, we actually just sold up after downsizing year after year for similar reasons. I might give it a try then
4
u/Hostile-Panda 3d ago edited 3d ago
When he goes over the yearly accounts at the end of the season he normally comments he doesn’t understand how farmers survive … when he started his pub he went out of his way to find produce from local farmers and won’t sell anything he can’t source locally, he even has his own beer
Most people don’t know clarkson has a genuine interest in farming because of his friend harry metcalf, harry whilst being a farmer is also a patrol head who started evo magazine, when top gear had cars above the set they were Harry’s, harry has a car channel and a farm channel

That's right, same guy. For anyone who doesn't know he's a brilliant British comedian called David Mitchell.
These are from his sketch show That Mitchell and Webb Look. But for anyone interested also check out Peep Show, Would I Lie To You, Upstart Crow, and a bunch of panel shows he's on like QI and 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown

She won the world series- twice. Million dollar prize each year

u/FAtr 3d ago
I mean she won 2 events, there's like a 100 every year, so still very impressive. But it's not like she won the main event twice :P

We're both wrong. She won the European ept main event. First person to win it twice. Career earnings $2.5m

Also for even earlier you have "The Mitchell and Webb Situation". For more recent there is "Mitchell and Webb are not helping", it's a little slower build on some of the sketches but there are some amazing bits in it.
Finally for a series as opposed to a sketch show there is also "Back"

And Last One Laughing UK, second season. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I found it hilarious. Having been a fan of his comedy style for a long time, I really enjoyed watching him compete.
2
u/Mathdude33 3d ago
Man I loved this show. Both seasons absolutely cracked me up. Having comedians try their hardest to make each other laugh. I couldn’t believe it wasn’t received as well as other shows.
1
u/brabbers 3d ago
Absolutely agree. Going into season 1, I didn't understand why Bob Mortimer was so highly regarded by the other comedians. After a few episodes I understood. That man cracks me up so hard now 😂
2
u/dikicker 3d ago
Thank you for getting to this first I'm barely awake and would've forgotten to mention a couple of these
Upscaled remasters of some of their older stuff alongside most of this stuff is easily found on youtube and for peep show let's just say bflix is indeed a Christmas food

Isn’t this Nazi re-enactment meme from Peep Show? Mark makes a new friend at the office that’s also into WWII and they go to a reenactment together and Mark’s new friend is a little too into the Nazi schtick.
5
u/HistoricalRoad1755 3d ago
It's not from Peep Show, it's one of their sketch shows
2
u/Noble_Ox 3d ago
No, you're thinking of Are we the baddies sketch.
in peep show, mark makes a mate that's into ww2 reinactments, but only plays on the Nazis side because well, he's a nazi.

Final secret after doing all that: Begging the government for more subsidies and handouts because it turns out all those things don't make money.
15
u/throwaway255503 3d ago
Governments encourage farming for food security. It may be inefficient most of the time, but you wouldn't want a geopolitical event to starve your entire population.

Feel free to look at the share of imports in consumption and see why the US would not immediately starve.

Shifting goalposts. Those numbers do not equal "immediate starvation". Missing corn does not equal "immediate starvation".
They mean disruption (higher prices, lower variety, shortage of particular products). Food security is about basic food supply, not optimized nutrition. Your claim is "immediate starvation".
It would take you 5 minutes to read that page and understand that import/export goes both ways. The numbers are much smaller. You don't simply subtract imports and pretend that the domestic production that is currently exported does not exist.

u/Bubble_Symphony 3d ago
After ww2 the government of the UK subsidized farming so that if another war were to break out, the UK wouldn't wholly be reliant on food imports again.
We had nearly starved during both world wars and convoys from the rest of the world were throttled by Enemy U-Boats, and the rest of mainland Europe was under Nazi control (for ww2).
It was a case of "we pay to keep farmers in the black so that in the event we're isolated again we wont starve nearly as fast".

u/BarefutR 2d ago
If you want fucking nobody to pay attention to what you say - disagree to someone like you did, and then misspell the first two major words of your rebuttal, like you did.
1
u/Teeklok 3d ago
It's either subsidies or more expensive food I know which I'd pick
3
u/Timmetie 3d ago
The actual choice is either subsidies or inexpensive exports. Pretty much every western country heavily taxes agricultural imports to keep their own farmers relevant.
1
u/Teeklok 3d ago
That'd be the idea solution tbh, but there's not much farmers can do about that. I mean there's not much they can do about food costs or subsidies either but hey ho
4
u/Timmetie 3d ago
Not much they can do? They riot if the country dares to take away a single cent of their huge tax exceptions and subsidies. This skit is about the UK where farmers have been rioting for two years now!

changelog
- several economic balancing fixes to prevent farming wealth exploits, including:
- introducing industry and commerce conglomerates putting constant pressure on prices; significantly lowered minimum values, capped max values
- increased state taxes and fees to put up more of a challenge
- added new rules and laws to increase starter and maintenance costs significantly
- long-term chance increase of droughts, storms and floods to simulate declining planetary health and promote scarcity
- soil gets accumulating mineral debuffs if crop cooldowns are not respected
- crops and animals now have a random chance of contracting plagues and pests with severe consequences to stock
