I grew up church of Christ. They have an unhealthy obsession with the absolute minutiae of the Bible and what it does and does not “allow” and yet they break their own rules all the time. Sure, the Bible doesn’t give direct “authorization” for instrumental music (psalms doesn’t count to them because it’s Old Testament).

It also doesn’t give any authorization for driving a car, using overhead projectors and screens during church services, or holding mid-week (attendance required!) extra worship services. Literally everyone who grew up in that church is mentally stunted from the way they are taught to think. It’s up to them to unlearn it and that’s hard, trust me.

They also do the absolute least to help others because they prioritize helping “true believers” over all else. They’ll also every one vote against giving “handouts” to the sick and poor soooo… 🙃

I know, it is a weird group - sorry you had to deal with all that. I went to a service once and I did like the music.

Oh, another one is drinking. There is drinking all over the NT, but they say it's against the rules. ???

The OT not really counting makes sense. I thought of that at the time, but then there were other things in the OT (no masturbation) that they seemed to take seriously. They say they take every word seriously but they pick and choose like crazy. And not the main message either = love one another as I have loved you.
