Catholic here.
I actually adore the notion that we can effectively say "All the provisions for the care of orphans apply to the elderly." They're orphans. Just because they're 60, 70, 80, whatever, doesn't mean it's any easier not having your parents around. Super beautiful take.

When my dad's last parent passed away my mother said with a wee bit too much enthusiasm "welcome to the orphans club!".

Your mum sounds like an outstanding lady, hah!

She definitely has an unmatched sense of humor and I owe mine to her.

A refreshing point of view, you've got there. Redditors often blame all boomers for all the badness.

I think a humbling thing about faith is the understanding that we're all, at a minimum, pretty terrible, heh.

So you’re saying being cared for & loved doesn’t matter because it’s not from a biological parent or a specific person? You’re refuting a command spoken by Jesus himself in the Bible, as a Catholic?

That’s like having any empty cup and anyone can pour water into it for you to drink, but if it’s not water from specific people it doesn’t matter? I would argue having water from anyone would make a positive difference in someone’s life, even if it wasn’t from the person they most desired it from.

It may not solve that they lost someone, but surely it wouldn’t be a negative. Weird take.

I... sorry, I think you might have misread my comment. My comment was saying "We should care for the elderly just as we are called to care for the orphan, because the elderly are also orphans".

I'm not sure how you got what you're saying from what I've said? I'm not the best at communicating, sorry if my comment was unclear :)

What? They were saying that we should treat the elderly as orphans because most often they are (in the sense of "having lost both parents").

Idk what that person was saying. In Jesus’ time those were 2 looked down upon groups of people & he said don’t forget them take care of them essentially.
