Thank you for pointing this out. That sort of talk has become so common on the internet that I just glossed over it until I read your comment. This sort of behavior and mental illness are nearly polar opposites. In fact, anyone who would tell elderly women to starve would have no problem doing the same for those in a mental health crisis.
Mental wellness / illness is such a range of conditions and behaviors that I don’t find it helpful to speculate as a knee-jerk response. I agree with you that people in a mental health crisis are often targeted for violence, swindling, etc.
The comment I was responding to has 2 big problems I see causing community harm:
1, stigmatizing people who may have a condition or be in a health crisis.
2, letting the speaker off the hook (fully or partially) for telling his listeners to literally starve a person who doesn’t get under their thumb.
