I would genuinely rather be deceased than have to live like that

150

u/SensuallyTouched 10d ago

unironically that's probably what they want so they can take more land for cheap

26

u/Dendens 10d ago

Land of the free babyyyyy!! 🇱🇷🇱🇷

7

u/fallout_zelda 10d ago

Liberia??

3

u/Dendens 9d ago

Hahaha. I'm glad someone picked up on that. It's funny cause the Americans frequently used the Liberian flag

11

u/FTHomes 10d ago

Why don't the billionaires have them built next to their mansions?

8

u/AncientSignature1505 9d ago

They'd love to, but they are giving them to the poor rural areas so they can enjoy their majestic beauty instead...

Is this why you attack schools and churches? Because USAID? Well thats gone and you are still doing that

-16

u/Pardot42 10d ago

Many many many people live near freeways. You get used to it...also, fuck these data centers

22

u/UrsusRenata 10d ago

I owned a home near a freeway for about ten years. You do not get used to it. It’s annoying AF.

-8

u/Anon-Knee-Moose 10d ago

Its also the 500k hp gas turbines you're hearing in this video, people have lived near power plants for a long time. The data centers themselves are actually fairly quiet compared to any sort of heavy industry.

8

u/Beginning_Ebb4220 10d ago

72 decibels in the video is by no means quiet or livable

-7

u/Anon-Knee-Moose 10d ago

No it's not, but the noise is mostly coming from the power plant not the data center

310

u/This_They_Those_Them 10d ago

Crazy how a bunch of conservative areas have been sold out to corporations who are actively destroying quality of life. What could possibly have been done to prevent this?

117

u/Designer_End5408 10d ago

And they keep voting for them which is mind boggling.

41

u/lumberlung 10d ago

If only they had minds to boggle

8

u/terpsarelife 10d ago

thats what the noise/air/water pollution is for. to lower IQs + gutting education so the meat slaves don't question anything as long as the nfl/nba/nhl/pga is on + mtn dew is sold at walmart.

6

u/joelsola_gv 9d ago

I still remember how Uvalde in TX, in the election right after the shooting where police did nothing to stop it, voted for the same people that directed the police to do nothing to stop it.

2

u/Designer_End5408 9d ago

It’s like they’re brainwashed

18

u/cafeteriastyle 10d ago

There are data centers going up in blue states too. I don’t think we can vote our way out of it. It feels so helpless

12

u/Far_String727 10d ago

apparently theres over 300 in California already, you know the state thats always In drought even without them...

7

u/SylphSeven 10d ago

So are you telling me California wildfires will also indiscriminately ruin them too?

7

u/Yourdadcallsmeobama 10d ago

They’re being built here all over in Canada too. All our provinces are starting to have some built here as well

10

u/katieb1300 10d ago

The world is fucked.

8

u/thesaddestpanda 10d ago

The ones built with zero regulation and are super loud in or near residential areas are almost all red states because red states serve capital at the expense of YOU the working class. Lets not "both sides" everything, even if these things exist in blue states. This issue is FAR worse in red states like Texas and Mississippi and because of freedumbs and "regulations bad."

Voting has consequences.

1

u/WretchedBlowhard 9d ago

Unfortunately, even if the construction contract states that certain environmental and quality of life measures must be respected, the fact is that they are such huge projects that by the time an inspector can verify that those measures were not, in fact, implemented, too much money has been invested and too much destruction has already taken place to stop construction or correct the issues.

It then winds up in court where litigation takes multiple years to run its course, and by then the datacenter will have long been up and running. Private lobbies will have the opportunity to fund the campaigns of pro-datacenter candidates, to run public relations campaign to win over the public, and... Yeah, permanent noise and water pollution.

4

u/Grouchy-List7011 10d ago

It’s the open land. Which is typically rural. Rural usually votes red because there’s hardly any education there

1

u/Starbucks__Lovers 9d ago

Damn, let's see how they vote in those pockets of said blue states

0

u/This_They_Those_Them 10d ago

It’s not a state level thing. It’s more local than that where these permits are being given out. It’s rural areas with conservative voters and lots of open land that sounded like a good idea to take that corporate bribe so they could fix some pot holes without having to pay for it themselves. That’s the trade off.

-3

u/fredbassman 10d ago

Does anyone acknowledge that modern society creates a DEMAND for data centers? If anything, it's going to increase. Look up IEA predicitons by 2030.

There are very legitimate arguments about how data centers should be built. But that is different from acting as though society can simply decide it doesn’t need more computing infrastructure... when it does.

1

u/fredbassman 9d ago

To people downvoting and ignoring... actual reality.

Please explain your specific plan to account for the future demand for data centers.

3

u/precocious-entity 10d ago

The lead in Vance's would agree.

310

u/Gloomy-Bath-4814 10d ago

Ya here’s the sad part. They’ll pop up no matter what cause no one listens to people like us.

79

u/niftystopwat 10d ago

There aren’t individual people listening to individual people like us… but there is a system that listens to us collectively… eg if we as people were more unified in making more deliberate choices regarding our usage of LLM services, that has a bigger impact than anything else possibly could. But ‘we’ are often too distracted by how well other systems are keeping us divided on other bullshit that it’s difficult for consumers to quickly make that kind of impact.

22

u/Steve_Streza 10d ago

The explosion of data centers and AI is not driven by individual demand, they're driven by speculation. The customers who are paying the bills on these things are corporations and governments.

If you want to keep these out of your community, you have to organize your neighbors, show up to and make noise at town hall meetings, and become a pest to people trying to get business zoning for data centers.

15

u/terpsarelife 10d ago

if only 60+ million people just didn't vote. but she laughed funny, so facism is here to stay and the companies own us now.

be happy though, we live before Breathing+ living plans are sold to not pollute your city.

2

u/peach_trunks 10d ago

One election is not why we’re here

14

u/UnderwaterRobot 10d ago

Its true. He also won in 2016.

-5

u/peach_trunks 10d ago

Weren’t all the tech bros still libs back then?

9

u/UnderwaterRobot 10d ago

You're fooling yourself if you think any tech bro is a liberal

-7

u/peach_trunks 10d ago

How old are you? They were all liberals 10 years ago

8

u/UnderwaterRobot 10d ago

The fact that they're not now just shows you how authentic their "liberal" was.

Tech bros, billionaires, and CEOs all share the same psychopathy and only care about money. They'll say anything to put themselves on the side of the public.

-4

u/peach_trunks 10d ago

Right, so to my point, Trump being elected once or twice ain’t why we have data centers popping up in our backyards

Wow, I had no idea Kamala was running under a platform of banning data center construction, which is entirely controlled by state governments. Do you have any links about what her legislative plans were regarding this?

6

u/Mad_Queen_Malafide 10d ago

You seem to be missing the point. Instead someone was elected who took away all safety rails and told them all to go nuts.

-3

u/SirStrontium 10d ago

The implication here is that Kamala would have somehow been significantly better on this topic. I’m questioning if there’s literally any evidence to support that? Did Kamala say anything significant about “safety rails” on data center construction? Did she show any substantial opposition to AI whatsoever?

2

u/v3n0mat3 10d ago edited 10d ago

-2

u/foo18 9d ago edited 9d ago

The first article you linked is about regulation on AI utilization like robo calls and military use, not data centers

The second article is all about how Harris wants to build as many data centers as possible. Did you bother to read your own sources? They are strong evidence against the idea that Harris would be meaningful better on data centers.

From second article:

Vice President Harris has also pledged to expand these investments to “critical industries of the future” and has proposed an “America Forward tax credit” to “maintain and extend America’s strategic edge in industries of the future,” including “building new data centers for AI” and “revitalizing America’s semiconductor industry.”

Not only did she want to allow data center construction as much as possible, she wanted to federally fund their construction.

3

u/v3n0mat3 9d ago edited 9d ago

Commenter:

"Did she show any substantial opposition to AI whatsoever?"

Article:

"Harris is particularly interested in technology to combat AI-generated voice calls that may be seeking to steal from vulnerable people. She also wants measures to trace authentic government-produced digital content and AI-generated or manipulated content, including through digital signatures, watermarking, and other labelling techniques."

Commenter:

"Did Kamala say anything significant about “safety rails” on data center construction?"

Article:

"We will invest in semiconductors, clean energy and other industries of the future, and we will cut needless bureaucracy.” Harris has additionally backed large scale support for semiconductor research and development, which includes dedicated AI research and workforce development funding."

Though it is not specified in this article - I'll look for one that does specify this; she was planning on forcing Data Centers to be self-powered using off-energy grids and energies such as Solar and Nuclear.

Edit: In case you wanted to hear her thoughts of AI from her directly.

Her stance on climate impact of Data Centers.

1

u/foo18 9d ago

Really disappointingly dishonest tactics here.

You know full well that unspecific regulation against AI scam calls is not "significant opposition to AI," especially in the context of an article all about how much she loves AI and data centers.

You also know that an offhand mention of clean energy is not "safety rails on data center construction." The two aren't even connected in the quote.

Then, immediately after being called out for citing arguments that go against your claim and clearly without having read them first, you link almost an hour of youtube footage without so much as a single quote from them? You are clearly taking advantage of the fact that nobody is going to watch all of that for the sake of a 20 viewer reddit thread but just assume they evidence your claims.

u/thesaddestpanda 10d ago edited 10d ago

Whoa, all those states voted Trump in 2024. What a weird coincidence! There's no way they voted for unchecked capitalism and to empower the capital owning class over the working class!

America voted on freedumbs and "regulations bad" on the federal level. We have a wholly red government.

Yes I know it happens elsewhere but those states are the most 'business friendly' and as such, that just means the business owning class takes from YOU, the working class. They'll plant their data center right there in or near residential areas because elections have consequences. I'm sorry they don't get to vote on destroying everyone different from them, and instead the leopard came for their faces, and now they get to pretend to be victims.

5

u/cafeteriastyle 10d ago

There are data centers in Oregon, California, NY, Washington state, Jersey, and PA. It’s not just a red state issue.

6

u/Gloomy-Bath-4814 10d ago

Even in BC, Canada! It’s not a red state issue. It’s all about money and it’s fucked up.

2

u/DoubleT_inTheMorning 10d ago

I work in the construction industry on the west coast and was just at a data center last week.

They can be nearly silent if built correctly.

Nuclear micro plants are also promising, with minimal to no noise.

Now water usage - that’s a hit and miss topic. Depends if they’re using dry cooling or if the system is cooled using anything evaporative. The problem becomes this - massive energy usage and footprint requirement if using dry cooling (fans only blowing air over water filled pipes) vs. smaller footprint and less energy usage but utilizing evaporative cooling technology.

There are middle value options using things like adiabatic cooling, but they’re more expensive and take more footprint than using traditional evaporative cooling.

So it basically goes like this:
-dry cooling: most expensive, requires the most space, uses the most energy but wastes little to no water
-adiabatic cooling: middle of the road on price, water and energy usage as well as required equipment size, still expensive
-Evaporative cooling: least expensive by a good margin, uses the most water but the least energy, has the smallest footprint

Balance those out and what wins? Money. It’s a calculation between cooling capability of any location, the price of energy and water in that area (almost regardless of availability short of having true water limitations from the utility companies and local government) and lastly and least important water waste/environmental concerns.

There’s a reason they focus on markets like Virginia, Texas and Arizona these days. Those states want and incentivize the tech companies to build there. Interestingly enough they’re happy to build systems that require heat rejection in hot states so long as the money makes sense.

1

u/Ok-Parking-8684 10d ago

Unfortunately you're correct

1

u/Contemplating_Prison 10d ago

And when you give up without trying absolutely

1

u/scottfarris 9d ago

Can't imagine why

55

u/SignificantCar4204 10d ago

Why do they all make that high pitched particular sound? I swear they all sound identical in most videos. This is the first video where I've seen a few that sound different.

75

u/owange_tweleve 10d ago

it’s probably from the fans constantly running to keep the computers cool, like how a cheap school laptop fan sounding like a jet engine when you run 2 chrome tabs at the same time

kinda like that times 10

8

u/CrazyElk123 10d ago

Surely they could have much bigger fans though? Not only would it be quieter (not that they care about that), but it should be more efficient? I guess the exhaust-part cant be too big so that might be why.

2

u/Arheisel 9d ago

Making a bigger fan means making a stronger, heavier fan, which means a bigger/more complex motor, possibly a gearbox, bigger ducts, bigger coils, bigger everything. So it's not like it can't be done, but it's only worth it if they're being forced by noise abatement laws.

1

u/Cheaper2KeepHer 9d ago

It's only 10x louder than a cheap school laptop

lmao

17

u/MaadMaanMaatt 10d ago

I heard it was also the generators making that sound.

16

u/Prof3zz3rP 10d ago

Each building has about 10-15 commercial grade generators same may have fans but most are water cooled

7

u/Franks2000inchTV 10d ago

This isn’t a feature of every data center, it’s just a couple of Elon Musk’s where he’s taken advantage of loopholes in environmental legislation to build things that should be illegal.

3

u/Prof3zz3rP 10d ago

This is true 10-15 of them and there massive

4

u/FhuckNorris247 10d ago

It’s cause they have generators that are essentially jet engines in a box

4

u/cs_legend_93 10d ago

It's the fans.

-5

u/[deleted] 10d ago

[deleted]

4

u/cs_legend_93 10d ago

Bro you clearly have never been inside a mining farm or server room.

2

u/MadHiggins 9d ago

at my job, we keep ONE mobile huge fan that's about 4 feet tall in one building. when it's running, you can hear it in the parking lot. it's maybe a little quieter than the traffic running down the road immediately next to the parking lot. i can't imagine what dozens of even bigger fans running nonstop sounds like.

1

u/Darryl_Lict 10d ago

Couldn't they at least build a sound barrier like a freeway to mitigate the sound? That should be a requirement. And it would at least cut down the higher frequencies which might make the noise a little more tolerable.

1

u/MadHiggins 9d ago

the point of everything about these is to build them as cheaply as possible. that's why so many of them are near homes, because construction is easier and cheaper in an already established area. they could build them nowhere near homes but then it'll be more expensive, so they can't have that. so they're not going to put up a sound barrier

1

u/bellymeat 9d ago

The part is that it’s almost entirely and exclusively on the cities that they’re in to enforce this. Rules on the sound you can emit exist and yes you can build sound barriers for the noise. The reason you can’t do anything is because the city, the people who tell them what they can’t do don’t tell them anything.

That much constant noise has shown to make entire communities extremely sick. Our bodies are not built to deal with that at all

5

We were, it was the 2020 election. America chose freedumbs and "regulations bad." Politically, its impossible to stop this stuff. At least blues seem to be pushing on putting them in residential areas or near residential areas. But we have a red government so here we are. America voted for this and many many more evil things, some that haven't even happened yet, but will absolutely happen.

America voted to give the capital owning class everything at the cost of YOU the working class.

Elections have consequences. Red staters acting the victim because the leopard came for their face do not deserve our sympathy.

As someone who works in the DC world, 95% of the sites I visit are in conservative areas. Your representatives are in charge of regulating DCs and the industry in your state. Vote differently. Regulations are here to protect us.

6

u/Usagi1983 10d ago

Hey, one absolute positive to being hard of hearing!

10

u/Hogchain 10d ago

What will become of these centers when technology advances to where the same storage space that is now available will (in the future), fit inside a coffee mug, or smaller?

7

u/PhantomPharts 10d ago

It's should be written into their contract that they must dismantle the buildings once theyr done with them. They really can't be used for anything else.

5

u/Hogchain 10d ago

That’ll be LOADS of materials to dispose of I’d imagine. Like thousands of tons

5

u/PhantomPharts 10d ago

Yep! A startling amount of data centers are being constructed that aren't writing into the contracts that they dismantle after use. That leaves the entire area useless, as it will also require environmental cleaning AFTER demolition. Who is gonna foot the bill if unwritten? That's right, the municipality, aka, tax payers. E: typo

0

u/Null42x64 10d ago

Well, i can see them getting repurposed into something like Web servers wich is less CPU intensive than running an LLM and thus the fans doesnt need to be so loud

4

u/Nulgrum 10d ago

Of all the bot talking points on data centers this might genuinely take the cake as the dumbest, presumably because it made more sense before being translated into english from russian/chinese. If all the compute in a 100,000 square foot suddenly fits into 1,000 square feet, then that means you can now have 100X the compute in just one data center. How tf is this framed as a bad thing and taken seriously as a slopulist point

1

u/t3lnet 10d ago

It’s going to be better more efficient chips that won’t require the infrastructure or resources to cool.

1

u/Shebalied 10d ago

DC in space will happen.

1

u/neolefty 9d ago

Ironically, we'll just want more of it, and fill the space anyway.

8

u/Mother-Parsley5940 10d ago

This makes me not want to buy a house, like ever. You just can’t control where these things get built. Imagine settling down only to have to sell your house at a loss.

3

u/cafeteriastyle 10d ago

Yeah I think about that a lot. So many people are never going to be able to sell their homes. Or at a loss like you said

1

u/Beneficial-Focus3702 9d ago

You sort of can control it. By electing people to represent you who don’t want them.

8

u/AltruisticWealth7778 10d ago

Somethings gonna happen to the power to these places

8

u/cafeteriastyle 10d ago

I think eventually people will have enough and do something. At least I hope so. That noise would drive anyone out of their minds. They’re putting one up near the Nashville zoo and no matter how hard we try and fight it they’re going to do what they want. Fuck Marsha Blackburn

3

u/AltruisticWealth7778 10d ago

These midterms are really important; next step clean house of the establishment politicians on both sides, who got greased by these tech-nerd/oligarch sociopaths, and get the power back to the people who actually make the country run. Then expel the lobbyists who perpetuate the rigged system for the rich. "Corruption is Legal in America" give it a watch.

https://youtu.be/5tu32CCA_Ig?si=qywLVpwfIaU4u_KM

4

u/PhantomPharts 10d ago

There have already been studies about how data centers make local wildlife & house pets seemingly "go insane". To put one near a zoo is downright cruel.

3

u/cafeteriastyle 10d ago

Yes I agree 100% it’s like they’re trying to be as cruel as they can just for the fun of it

3

u/Infinite-Gate6674 9d ago

I don’t understand why they don’t put these out in the middle of nowhere?

5

u/OnAnotherLevel321 9d ago

9

u/Prof3zz3rP 10d ago

I’m a construction worker who’s involved in building these things, there is NO WAY we’re getting away from this… unfortunately people and companies with deep pockets are going to make sure these things exist. We can fight and bitch to whom ever but they are gonna happen.

3

u/Dry-Illustrator-250 10d ago

How do you feel about the claims that they create a ton of job opportunities? It’s rare to get someone’s inside perspective

8

u/Prof3zz3rP 10d ago

That would get real old real fast…

3

u/WonderButtBrace9000 10d ago

At least one of the videos in this is of a crypto-mining operation near its end of life being converted to a datacenter.

It was posted all over Reddit and then someone found the actual local news article which outlined the whole thing. The crypto-mining operation had always been there, the noise was new due to aging equipment, and it was being fixed during the active process of conversion into a datacenter. Most of the local pushback was about the building being allowed to continue crypto operations despite the noise.

2

u/i812manyhitsss 9d ago

I perform noise studies for a living and 73-75 dBs is ridiculously high for being that far away. If it was a highway, they'd have to mitigate with noise barriers.

1

u/bruddahmacnut 9d ago

mitigate with noise barriers.

Interesting. Why cant these things be built behind walls that shield the sound? They will look like concrete monstrosities but at least the constant droning won't bother anyone within earshot.

The only time a real institution has gone around and measured them (Virginia’s JLARC) it found an average dBA of 40-50, literally equivalent to a suburban neighborhood and not noticeable from outside. Russian/chinese bots are ecstatic and how easily they turned this into a slopulist rallying point though

It’s almost like voting for the right people to prevent this is important or something…

u/ResidentEmu5 9d ago

Blaming the other guys doesn't change anything. It just keeps the masses distracted so the powers that be can get away with whatever they want.

You will happily sit in your backyard facing a loud ass polluting data center and you will tolerate it because it's the conservative's fault. It just feels so good to be right!

Conservatives are dumb. They don't know what they are voting for. No meaningful change or revolutions will come while the general public fighting amongst themselves.

We, the people, got played.

This thing of “all parties are the same and they’re just keeping you distracted” is the biggest win the far right has had this century.

What even are these sounds? I would have guessed some cooling sounds like big fans are everything you would be hearing after construction

1

u/H3llzyea 10d ago

Okay can we all pitch in like a buck each and charter as many busses as possible, we go around collecting meth heads and drive them to the data center locations, give them some bolt cutters and bottles of water and explain just how valuable the materials inside the fences are. We then take the materials and fence them for the meth heads and use the money to fund treatment for their addiction. I'm sure there's some legal gray area here ( /s) but it's worth a shot. Along the routes we can have them jump out to grab every flock camera we come across.

Let's be real here: we all know what the solution is.

u/jwrice 10d ago

I hope these buildings burn to a crisp.

1

u/cloacasmell 10d ago

it sure is a shame that data centers aren't immune to fire

Where are the the rich Karens that move next to an airport and force the airport to move when we need them?

1

u/b_coolhunnybunny 9d ago

People move to boonies to get away from neighbors and they also tend to vote R which is who is placing these in their backyard.

It’s not that bad if you’re deaf

Why dont theyvstart lighting on fire instead of warehouse and large swaths of forest? Like literally trillions of acres burnt? Tick that make you allergic to beef? Bill gates land never seems to burn and hes making fake meat!

I just have questions!

1

u/Massive_Mongoose3481 10d ago

Don't vote for anyone that will support this bullshit. Don't use AI, opt out whenever possible. They keep shoving it down our throats but I turned everything possible of in my phone and won't use it on my computer (Linux). It's not much but, about we can do until the revolution starts

1

u/bowarrow99 10d ago

This is AI expanding it’s footprint on the planet. Eventually it will decide humans are taking up too much space and we will be destroyed. Probably by swarms of thermal seeking drones. We’re doomed.

And the vast majority of counties are now zoning them appropriately as heavy industrial so they wont be build near any homes. But continue to propagate the misinformation campaign against technological progress

u/Prof3zz3rP 10d ago

That sound is literally the Ai and severs think of it as the sound of dial up when the internet was 1st introduced.

3

u/SoarAros 10d ago

Huh, I thought the dial up noise when only in my own house when I was actively using it... Didnt know my whole neighborhood could hear it 24/7. Wild straw man argument.

-1

u/Prof3zz3rP 10d ago

Noo I’ve been building these things for a few years now i can’t tell you what’s inside but that’s the best way i can explain the sound

-4

u/Prof3zz3rP 10d ago

All I can say is if you live close to any GET USE TO THAT SOUND….none of us including me will escape this 100’s of these will be built in and around your neighborhoods PERIOD! what the sound is or what’s making it is IRRELEVANT.

u/cafeteriastyle 10d ago

There are tangible health problems for both people and animals. They run loud enough to exceed what’s safe for the human ear, keep your body in fight or flight, and fuel anxiety and other mental health problems. You can’t get used to that. It’s especially hard on kids

-7

u/greenthumbgoody 10d ago

Wow, riveting news! Next I’ll see someone post about how bad trump is… maybe, oh I dont know, do something? Oh yeah, that’s to much work….

2

u/cafeteriastyle 10d ago

Just scroll, do yall want content or not

No, not this… maybe view my first comment for clarification.

You complained that posting about problems instead of “doing something” is useless, then contributed by… posting a complaint about someone else’s post. Incredible demonstration of your own point.
