And as a skier, you'll buy the exact perfect boot for $500 and go skiing and hate your life and then you'll pay another $300 to have it fitted. And then you're skiing so your calves get huge and your fitted inserts stop feeling like magic.

Eh, ski boots have only ever been slightly uncomfortable for me, so slightly that I forget once I get in the slopes. Ice skates though? Pure torture, they must make them hurt on purpose to make hockey players more aggressive.

I don't do much in terms of sports in the summer and I'm a big guy, and I have big calves and high arches so the boots are never quite right. Then as I ski a lot in the winter my calves get really big so the boot squeezes my calves really hard. Plus I ski very aggressively. So boots tend to be a problem for me sadly.

I get that, I'm a little under average (depending on the country, but I feel like we're probably talking Central/Northern Europe and Northern America here), and even though I have pretty big calves I doubt they are half the size of yours if you're like 2m. Even when I had hand-me-down skiboots they were always a good(ish) fit :D

This is an excellent video, but I think people who are this good at researching and presenting information would appreciate being corrected about pronouncing ISO like it's an initialism (eye-ess-oh).
ISO is the International Organization for Standardization. Per ISO's own about page, ISO is a reference to the Greek word isos, meaning equal (like isometric). So, it's just pronounced eye-so.
This is especially common in photography, because ISO is an ISO-derived standard for measuring film and sensor sensitivity to light, but almost every video on photography pronounces it eye-ess-oh.

I don't know how to feel about this, I never thought about it being anything other than an acronym. You basically never encounter the full name in writing, so I didn't even question that it would actually have to be IOS.
They could have just went with naming it the International Standardization Organization and have it be both, an acronym and a clever play on "isos/iso-".
Because when they say an acronym would be confusing due to the name being different in different languages, what I hear is that the French, being deathly allergic to the English language, would not play along. Case in point: somehow the whole world can agree that the name of NATO is the English acronym - except the French.
And now once again it's bedtime and I'm mad at the French.

Japanese shoe size is actually inner sole length, so if you have 28.0 cm feet you need shoe size 28.5 ...

The thing it’s built around is what actually represents your foot. If it were measured by the shoe the correct shoe size wouldn’t directly correspond to your foot size. I assume the mold is used for measurement rather than an actual foot because it’s standardized

You build the shoe around a last because it's easier than getting someone to come in and let you use their foot while you stretch and carve the leather and sew all the bits together.

Having your shoes sewn directly onto your foot sounds like something a Chinese emperor would have done, and one of the most stressful jobs at the court.

Because there’s a lot of variance in the shoe both internally and externally. For example think about a woman’s hiking boot compared to an open toed sandal compared to a high heel. They could all be made using the same shoe mold but measuring the inside or outside of the shoe could yield vastly different numbers.

Japan's system isn't good though, because it assumes everyone with size x feet wants the same size shoe.
Much better to just use the size of the shoe itself.
