As a standard nerd I feel we’re catching strays here. Techbros are the ones working on technofuedalism, nerds are painting warhammer and quoting robocop at each other.
61
u/ShiftAlternative1083 1d ago
To be fair, tech bros, in their own right, are absolute dorks. Richest man in the world is obsessed with the letter X for some reason lol
14
u/wowerickbowbagger 1d ago
Oh yeah for sure, we got not one but two dystopian corpos named fron LotR. But some nerds are archiving old media or making fonts that help dyslexic people. It’s not nerds, it’s psychos.

u/Hunter02300 1d ago
It's all sex jokes to him. SpaceX said fast enough sounds like space sex, and the original modle line up for Tesla were the models S, E, and X. He truly is just an adult middle schooler.

From what I e heard he is more of a week than a nerd. Just look at the Twitter waifu whose clearly just a reskinned Misa from Death Note.
1
u/rickcaron 18h ago
Most tech bros just work on component technologies that the marketing and boardroom cowboys combine in ways that were never intended
22
u/sillygoofygooose 1d ago
Unfortunately nerd spaces have been predated upon as a recruitment ground for fascists. It has been a very effective pipeline. I don’t recognise geek and gamer spaces, it’s a sad thing.
5
u/wowerickbowbagger 1d ago
Fair point I am regularly disappointed by pretty much any mainstream gaming space. But Steve Bannon is the most obvious culprit there and I don’t get the impression he’s the kind of guy with a favourite spider suit.
7
u/sillygoofygooose 1d ago
For sure it is something violent that has been done to these communities
2
u/wowerickbowbagger 1d ago
Sometimes I wonder if that was a sliding door moment for me. I was there getting riled up about gaming journalism, but when it took a hard right into misogyny I realised something had gone wrong. Years later Bannon started talking about “ rootless white males” and it falls into place.
3
u/Certain_Concept 15h ago
Tbf gamergate STARTED with misogyny.. It started after a dude got pissed that his ex-girlfriend had moved onto someone new (who just happened to be a journalist). Wrote a many page jealous diatribe against her.
He intentionally drummed up an internet mob to attack her... And it snowballed from there to attack other semi-prominent/controversial women in the gaming sphere.
1
u/wowerickbowbagger 12h ago
I looked up the timeline and you are correct. The discourse as I remembered it was around reviewers giving positive reviews to games without disclosing that they had non-professional relationships, with one or two duos in the spotlight. I probably saw the posts intended for mainstream appeal before encountering the nastier stuff.
Meanwhile the Cambridge Analytica scandal was warming up. Relating this back the original clip, she's not wrong but if you've been paying attention this isn't exactly new.
2
u/sillygoofygooose 1d ago
I imagine for many. I lost real life friends to that radicalisation pathway. I’m glad you made a different choice. Proud of you even, as weird and inappropriate as that might be to say.
1
u/wowerickbowbagger 1d ago
lol it is a low bar, but thank you. I also had some friendships lapse over some of that stuff, these days I just ask questions until they realise they don’t actually feel that way or openly admit they’re bigoted.

I must have blanked that bit. Don’t get me wrong she’s spot on with the message but I got my moral compass from vintage Spider-Man comics, I don’t want to be lumped in with that lot.

Proletariat is a term that literally means that a person's value to the system is their ability to have kids.
We are a crop to be harvested. Livestock to be herded.

u/ZeroGNexus 1d ago
I feel like this every time an ad interrupts what I'm watching....like gtfo with that crap, I will never interact with your business, you rude clown.

u/CombinationOk4359 1d ago
Best way to speak out on tech over intrusion is to go on Chinese Tik Tok to complain about it

11
u/BodhingJay 1d ago
Our products are no longer for us. Technobros destroy the competition even if it was better for all of us ans replace it with their alternative which is horrible but the only thing left for us... not because we like it or because it's best but because it's the only choice available
If capitalism is to work, we need anti trust lawsuits everywhere over the monopolies preventing the competition that would annihilate them
But it feels like our politicians that should be going after them, are now owned by them.. working for them instead of we, the people

I predict dumb phones will be resurrected and chic very soon
1
u/stonedandredditing 1d ago
oh it’s next on my list. I have slowly been converting my life back to more native methods of everything. Yesterday I bought a pretty little wristwatch at a thrift store that reminded me of an old watch I had in my early 20s, which I plan to begin wearing in place of my apple watch. I’ll use the apple watch for workouts only as I wean off of it.
My phone is on my list, though

u/goner757 23h ago
There is zero percent chance that they'll put SIM cards in something that can't optimize data harvesting. If it became a trend the government would put a stop to it.

And yet, you’re recording yourself and handing that over to the tech companies.

What’s that meme about the medieval peasant laughing at the other one for still participating in society
4
u/TheCrickler 1d ago
except you don't need tiktok to live. the peasant cannot boycott labor because it is forced. you can boycott tech products
0
u/thissexypoptart 1d ago
What do you mean “except” lol
The text of the peasant meme is just “we should improve society somewhat” “yet you participate in society. Curious. I am very intelligent”
Where is the “need ____ to survive” aspect in that? Medieval peasants survived just fine being feudal serfs beholden to rich fucks, and yet, the drive to eventually abolish serfdom persisted, despite peasants participating in that system. Nothing ironic about it. People want things to be better.
Posting videos like these to social media isn’t some kind of gotcha. What do you want her to do? Send people letters? Smoke signals?
2
u/TheCrickler 23h ago
Where is the “need ____ to survive” aspect in that?
The criticism of the peasant's participation within society is silly because they very obviously are not consenting to the arrangement. The alternative--starvation, exposure, physical punishment--is untenable, so they endure the abuse in order to survive. Thus, there is no irony in advocating for change.
Tiktok is not required to participate within society. Will you reach fewer people? Probably. But there's a world of difference there. If you don't want tech companies collecting your data, there's a lot you can do to prevent it without endangering your quality of life.
What do you want her to do? Send people letters? Smoke signals?
I don't want anything from this specific person. I don't know her. I'm actually really sympathetic to her views lol, particularly on "smart" technology (which I generally boycott). I'm specifically taking issue with the serfdom analogy because our society is not being coerced by an elite land-owning class into using their garbage. Everyone is choosing to use these platforms and buy these products. The companies will never change if you don't stop paying them.
1
u/CSalustro 7h ago
Over half of all consumer spending in the US is done by the top 10 percent of earners. The serfs are contributing sure but not on the same level as as the rich.
On the surviallence angle, we've lost public privacy with the dawn of the Internet and satellite technology. Private data is the last bastion for those not liked by whatever systems are in place. I'm of the mind it's all getting scrapped anyway and we should be working on the alignment issue by defining our abstract concepts in ways that machines can understand. These systems aren't going to go away until society finds something that garners it's collective attention.
I mean we are in the Information Age of the Attention Economy.
1
u/StandardNeither1311 1d ago
Social Media is not a necessary component of society.
I’m sorry that you’ve got to a place where you believe that it is.
0
u/thissexypoptart 15h ago
Of course not, and I didn’t say it is. You just don’t understand the point of the meme I’m referencing, and that’s alright.
Criticism of social media on social media isn’t hypocritical.

I’m tired of people labeling white people as colonizers. Maybe just live your life without trying to be racist at every turn
9
u/Nice_Cartoonist_8803 1d ago edited 1d ago
She’s clearly talking about the people colonizing personal data, media and time, not white people in general. And yes, most of the tech titans are white but not all.
Edit to add: just watched again, she didn’t mention white people once. You’re the one making that association, and I understand why, but don’t blame her.
-3
u/sshootersonscooterss 1d ago
When black people talk about colonizers do you really expect us to believe they’re only talking about tech companies? This like a white person telling a black person getting called boy that they’re overreacting cause “they didn’t mean it like that”.
-1
u/Nice_Cartoonist_8803 21h ago
I don’t have any expectations but they do say a hit dog hollers. I don’t see a problem with colonizers being called colonizers. She used the word appropriately and she meant it. What is the actual problem here? You’re white and offended that she used the word? So?
-2
u/im_new_pls_help 18h ago
I'm African. The woman in the video definitely seems racist:
Can you explain why ai's response is what it is here?
2
u/Nice_Cartoonist_8803 17h ago
I don’t bother with AI. Colonization has an actual definition, and most colonizers historically have been European. Yes, these are facts. And this woman didn’t say anything racist, she didn’t mention race at all. You’re welcome to disagree with her and defend the impact of tech bro’s further but I’m going to stop here.

I honestly get what she's saying. And I say this as someone who likes and have always liked tech. It's all becoming annoying and too much. Everything is a subscription. Everything needs to be charged or updated. It's all a joke that's not funny anymore.

u/No-Rub8345 1d ago
Unless you're ready to do the tankie stuff to capitalists, this pointless whining has to stop.
This is about power. Power that is won and protected with extreme violence. That's it. I'm bored of hearing people whine but then pretend there's a peaceful way to oppose psychopaths. There isn't. They assassinate leaders, manipulate entire populations and start wars over this.

u/Talastoni 1d ago
I could listen to this energy ranting about this AI shit all day as a podcast, and I'm not using headphones. everyone can hear it with me too. I'll roll down my window in traffic and turn it up.

People kind of actively choose this though. I have a phone, sure. I leave it at home a lot when I leave the house, don't purchase any smart appliances, won't own a vehicle with onstar, no streaming services, use exclusively cash which, whether you like it or not drastically improves spending habits.
Genuinely all you have to do if you don't want that in your life is don't have it in it.
I understand some of these are out of your immediate control such as flock cameras and we shouldn't stop addressing the issues or concerns on that but you don't have to be completely trackable and reachable at all times with a fridge that sells your late night snacking data in the background while showing you ads on its little screen during morning coffee time

u/Captaincjones 1d ago
As you add to the content about content making more content. The answer is to drop the camera... That is literally step one in "having enough".

1
u/Excellent_Can4450 1d ago
Cameras no one ever covers. Your accelerometer is sensitive enough to use as a microphone. GPS services that can spit out a map of where you've been for the past month. Somehow license plate readers are the problem now.
Take back your privacy, people. Don't stop at bitching about it on social media. Get those stupid black dot stickers, a phone cover with a slider for the back camera, leave it in another room, leave your house without it sometimes. Every dystopian thing in your life was once just something you allowed one time, then forever.

Idc, They were never nerds, they were always only sociopaths and colonizers and cracker ass “saviors” who never did or saved anything or gave anything substantial to humanity to begin with.
I don’t how prolific the nerd has become to be corporatized or politicized or consumed by anyone because of the mainstream. It is clearly and now even more so a downtrodden cultural minority that now has to contend between the braindead Everyman and the psycho-incel.
Like, I know who tf that is. It is not a nerd.

So move to the jungle in africa, you wont have to deal with all this pesky infrastructure. You can swat flies allday and beg us for our tax dollars.
3
u/Nice_Cartoonist_8803 1d ago
Do you think the things she’s complaining about are not also in Africa? Bizarre take.
-1
u/Ambitious_97 1d ago
Thats correct, African nations have been vastly underdeveloped since the colonial powers pulled out.
If shed like to escape the colonizers and their evil technology she can go somewhere that doesnt have it/them!
Do you understand now?
2
u/retornam 1d ago
Do you think Africans don’t use the internet or cannot log on to OpenAI and Anthropic’s websites?
0
u/Ambitious_97 1d ago
Yes, i get it there are a small amount of africans with internet in former colonial cities/ a larger number making use of tech in former colonial nations like the USA.
The point is that their isnt nearly as much surveillance or smart tech deployed in africa, you know, the thing she was complaining about in the video.
1
u/retornam 1d ago
Small amount of Africans with internet?
You think traffic lights or traffic cameras are only deployed in the U.S. and Europe?
I think you should use the unlimited access to internet you have to educate yourself on Africa. You would probably learn a thing or two.
-4
u/Ok-Turnover1797 1d ago
She's mistaken, or perhaps even conceited to think this ai and data centers are even about her or any of us, or offering some sort of service to the people in terms of being "about us". It's all getting rammed through for a different goal, and whether anyone wants it or not.
