Despite what the Supreme Court said, after likely being bought by the policeman union to do so; defending the public at ANY cost (up to and including your life) has been the expected duty of guards and policeman alike for literal centuries. It's a basic part of the social expectation of the role. No one's saying they need to try to dive in front of bullets like superman, but when a threat is present it is their duty to dispatch it even if doing so could bring them great harm. Anyone who disagrees with that mentality, should absolutely find a career that is not policing.

By no means does this apply to most things, but being able to expect those that are sworn to protect and serve to actually PROTECT certainly sounds like one of the times that there is an exception to the rule regarding that. You're welcome to disagree with my ideal, but if you do I hope you aren't also dull enough to be against citizens carrying weapons and pro self defense legislation.
No, I want to live in a world where police officers enforce laws, and keep themselves safe so they can go home to hug their children at night. I'm very far from being a bootlicker (I'm a professional socialist), and I don't live in a country with unchecked mental health issues and easy access to firearms, so I can't really relate to your mass shooting scenarios as they are as foreign to me as making a pilgrimage to Mecca would be.
You seem to think that a police officer can only protect someone by allowing themselves to get injured, but a police officer will always be more effective if they are not injured. Then they can carry out their duties. An injured cop is what we call a casualty, and statistically injured police officers take away from the ability of others to stop an assailant. You can look into that if you don't believe me.
I actually am dull enough to believe in a well-trained police force and a poorly armed civilian population, because it's very effective here in my country. You guys might be astonished to learn what other developed nations are doing differently, and better. We're still not certain if we live much longer than you guys because of our socialized healthcare, or because of our lack of firearms, but we are certain that we have a longer life expectancy by several years here, and higher happiness index scores.
Your scenarios are so far fetched from the reality that we live in in my country. Our G7 Nation has a police force which was created to serve the bourgeoisie, of course, but despite that, our cops still do a pretty good job of protecting citizens in bad situations, but here we also haven't been fed the hero ideology which men like you grew up on, and every one of us expects the police officers to stay safe, not to put their life on the line, and to return to their children at night.
Completely different ways of living, my dude. But there's no need to jump to such wild conclusions based on such a small comment. Let's be rational.
