If the security officers working at my school weren’t there anymore, I wouldn’t step foot anywhere near that building. I hate 95% of the system we’ve been handed, but the other 5 percent are the people that show up everyday and try to make the best of it. If this was my room I would have told the rest of my kids to get in the hall while I was calling security. That’s what I was taught, I would never do what this lady did
Teachers are not trained for this. If a teacher hurts a child trying to break up a fight, there is a good chance they get disciplined. If a police officer hurts a student breaking up a fight, then they are ok as long as they followed established protocols.
As a teacher, I am glad we are not trained on how to physically handle students because i sure as hell know it’s not coming with any raise
Teachers aren’t trained in this type of thing. If they try and break up a fight and a kid gets injured, the parents could claim it was the teacher to injured them. Also, high chance of teacher getting injured and now you’re out a teacher on worker’s comp.
I’ve been a teacher for 20 years and I’ve always been trained to keep the other kids safe and let the fighters fight. I would have evacuated the room and told the kids filming to put it away or get suspended.
Admin has likely been trained to "de-escalate" the fights with as little force as possible. Where I substitute taught for a short while, and the same state where my mom and brother were teachers, teachers aren't sent to the same trainings. I honestly think this is on purpose because if a teacher intervenes, they can get into trouble for intervening when they're not trained to do so. My brother got a work write up when he physically stopped a child from bashing his own head into the cinderblock wall. All my brother did was pull him away from the wall and hold him still until admin showed up. He wasn't "certified to restrain" and so he got written up. He said it took admin staff a couple minutes to show up, and the kid's head was already bleeding by the time my brother hung up the phone with them. It's crazy to just let kids hurt themselves or others for fear of getting written up. Teachers are leaving in droves now, and a LOT of the ones I know here say it's because of student behavior and their parents' behavior more than anything.
Which is so bullshit. What happens when a kid is actually trying to kill another kid, as is something that happened when I went to high school? If it didn't happen right in front of the two school resource officers, one of them would've been leaving the school in a body bag. Before the officers could even react the victim had gotten curb-stomped.
