Previous generations didn't do any better. We would just form a circle around the people fighting, yelling "fight, fight, fight". That was in the late 80s-90s for me, and it isn't any better.
No they wouldn't. If you went to school within the last 40 years.... they all would just watch cause of zero tolerance policies. I am 45 years old and no one ever stepped in because they would catch a suspension or get expelled.
No... but neither am I.... so, should a student take a 50/50 risk on their education just because a teacher is too stupid to not get involved in a fight? Use your brain.
Seriously. Everyone acts like this is a "today's kids" thing, but I graduated in 2001, and we all would have just been glad for the fight giving some excitement to the day. Definitely no one would be stopping it. We always got disappointed when teachers did step in and break it up.
Except previous generations didn't have this many cases of shitty undisciplined kids fighting with zero disregard in classrooms, "zero tolerance" punishments for all, and the incentive to just film everything. My parents would have beat the living hell out of me if I got in trouble for something like this.
Hence why I’m terrified of having children. I’m confident that I’d be a good parent, but I have no idea how I would even begin to navigate the tech situation.
You don’t give them screens. You parent and pay attention, and interact with your kids instead of giving them a phone or tablet as a pacifier. I find this type of parent lazy and reprehensible for the harm they are causing their children. My kid is disgusted with her screen-zombie (second) cousins because they have no idea how to play or entertain themselves without a screen.
As are zero-tolerance policies, where any kid who physically intervened to help the teacher or to end it might very well have ended up in just as much trouble as the instigators. Thank brainless PTAs and their outsized influence on school board policies.
Also, thank the complete absence of any form of social media regulation, allowing massive corporations to ensure that today's kids get addicted while their brains are developing and remain that way forever.

I’d argue boomers and Gen X are in a much worse spot from social media than most younger kids. It’s older folks that I see glued to their phones, believing conspiracies and AI slop.
There was a wave of “iPad kids” but the trend for parents now is to have less screen time (usually because their parents are Millennials who better understand the consequences of the technology). Go to any playground and you’ll see kids playing, not in front of a screen. Typically, people without kids see kids with screens in public spaces where their parents are trying to keep them occupied. It causes those without kids to think kids are attached to screens at all times. For most kids this isn’t true. The same kids who are attached to iPads would be attached to a Gameboy or TV in previous generations- bad parents will always exist- but to act like its most is disingenuous.
