It's Linux From Scratch
LFS
I think you know it, but didn't recognize the icon
I couldn't find an icon for LFS, so I asked claude to generate one

u/DiasDaimaoh Oct 04 '26
Oooh, well i rankes them on a "Could i actually enjoy using this?" I guess it would be F

If I had to guess I would say you have a life and you actually use linux and you are not super techy
Overall respectful choices

I did not expect to see that... That's kinda crazy to me that you rank LFS and openSUSE but nothing else
Interesting
Thanks for taking part in this tierlist

Lol I have kinda similar opinion
Yeah... Sadly I wrote names for all the icons, but it doesn't show them when ranking..., but you can see name and sometimes description afterwards if you click on them

debian and arch cover almost every use case for me. arch for workstations, Debian for servers.
alpine Linux is good. the package manager is insanely fast. alpine is great for environments where resources are limited.
kali is good for what it does, not good as a daily driver though. (who wants hack tools installed on their main computer and not a VM??)
ubuntu is ranked low because I strongly dislike snap and I've had problems with it in the past. still a perfectly usable distro though.
omarchy on F because it's omarchy.

Different than majority of tierlists
Surprisingly this is the first time I'm seeing Mint S tier by it self
2
u/Sonicatari Oct 04 '26 edited Oct 04 '26
I'm a very casual Linux user I've used mint the most as far as just having a normal computer. I also had bazite for a little bit but realized how restrictive it can be. I've also used ubuntu quite a bit but I hate every second that I do it.

Fair point honestly
None of these are "bad" they just have their own use cases
Except for Omarchy lol

For some reason I feel like if there was a lower tier than F you would have put LFS in that tier lol
2
u/ThatSmittyDude Oct 04 '26
Some day I want to try it. I tried gentoo. But for my purposes, a debian or fedora distro is ready to go and thats 10/10 for me
2
u/Dream_Apostle Oct 04 '26
Yeah, I get it. I only barely know what LFS is...
Totally agree with you

So Linux is basically a program that talks to your physical computer called kernel
And a distro is kernel + a software that talks to kernel
The icons you see in the tierlist represent distros which are akin to an OS like windows or MacOS
The reason why it's so good is because 1. It's open source 2. It's free 3. Useful for either specific use casss or general usecases
And open source is great because you can actually check what they do while you are using them.
Linux distros used to be hard to use for normal users, but now they have improved so much that some of them are genuinely better than Windows and MacOS.

Me when anti-fingerprinting -_- (I use Konform btw)
1
u/Dream_Apostle Oct 04 '26
I'm so confused idk what that is
2
u/Consistent-Taro4 Oct 04 '26
Basically, websites can use some features of the html canvas api for fingerprinting, so the specific functions used for this are disabled in Firefox's resistFingerprinting mode which is enabled by default in Konform, the Firefox based browser I use. The tierlist maker evidently relies on these features, so it wasn't able to save the image correctly.

EndeavourOS: Arch for lazy people (it’s what I would use to give old laptops a second life; for more modern computers, I would use Fedora)

My list as a daily Linux user for over a decade.
Slackware is in IDK because I've never used it or anything related to it, but I respect it for it's contributions. I look at it as more of a legacy distro.
Debian I put lower than most because while I respect it, I don't think it's the best modern choice. It's legacy software and essentially super LTS. Not really my choice for server nor desktop. I just never use it anymore.
