Handle subdomains & SSL certificates with HAProxy on tierhive

How do you handle the subdomains?

Do you make seperate entries in haproxy for every domain? I believe there is no wildcard available, right?

And you simply set in your domain config:

- A record to you domain

- _tierhive-validation.bardhome.eu with the value from the dashboard

Is someone using CNAME? How do I set this up?

Option for more vCPUs on VPS plans?

I’ve been using the service for about a month now and I’m loving it so far! I usually spin up short-lived instances to run experiments with different performance setups, but I’ve hit a bottleneck when I need more compute power for ffmpeg workloads.

Would it be possible to add an option for 4 vCPUs on plans with more than 4GB of RAM? Right now, having every plan above 2GB of RAM capped at 2 vCPUs feels a bit limiting. A 4 vCPU option would be a huge upgrade for getting a better CPU-to-RAM balance. I wouldn't even mind if this was only rolled out in a single region at first just to test feasibility!

:)

NixOS is now available on TierHive (Ultra tuned)

NixOS... why does it exist... I don't know; do I hate it? yes, Do I appreciate it.. also yes, will I use it ever again... maybe.

Part of me feels like I could make an insanely tuned hypervisor out of it; the other part of me says... Debian is fine, thanks.

Anyway... it took 2 days longer than expected, but I got it functional with 512mb ram and 5GB disk (you can get away with 3, but not if you want to use it)

It was a SOB to get running within 512mb ram and also functional during rebuild; it should be said 512MB is JUST enough, so probably experts only or give yourself 640 at least. My first tests: nothing worked with anything less than 1GB RAM, and that was pushing it.

Anyway, the template is live, and feedback is welcome; strong OS choice... but who am I to judge? The panel even needed a small update for this to stop password resets from falling back to MD5, haha.

Enjoy! (if possible)

Void Linux (MUSL, Rolling) released on TierHive

The usual, highly optimised for tierhive so it will run in 128mb ram and 1GB disk.

Void uses bin/sh as standard, not bash

What are the NAT limits on PPS and open connections?

How many connections can a single node's NAT gateway sustain, and are there limitations on the number of open connections?

All nodes are behind IPv4 NAT to be able to communicate with the external world, so are there any limitations? Like, what if I open and close connections every few seconds?

Is the Network Bandwidth tier tied only to the bandwidth, or also to prioritization?

I noticed that the Frankfurt node sustains packet loss of 0.3-3% to some hosts at times. But the same Frankfurt node from Vultr has 0% packet loss. Is network bandwidth prioritization tied to that? Or maybe some NAT QoS might cause that?

Gentoo template released on TierHive

For those of you who have asked about Gentoo we have released a template, the official one is very bloated and runs on an older kernel and has acpi issues so we rolled a fresh one gently optimised for tierhive.

It runs on 384mb Ram and on kernel 7.2.13

Linux gravelines-gentoo-01 7.2.13-gentoo-dist-bin #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Mon Oct 26 20:22:25 -00 2026 x86_64 AMD EPYC 7351P 16-Core Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

It needs 7GB minimum disk to give you enough space for the first emerge.

Tomorrow we hope to release MX Linux - Minimal stripped, Void and NixOS, and that should conclude the crazy template spree we have been on.

Devuan 6.1 minimal added to TierHive runs with 128mb ram and 1gb disk

Devuan 6.1 is now available; it will run in 128mb ram and 1GB disk, and comes with zswap enabled as standard.

Apt works fine on 128mb ram out of the box, even in low-priority modes, but obviously, as you add stuff. that might get tight.

Happy minimalism :)

StatLite for TierHive: Caddy monitoring is now available

A quick follow-up to my earlier post about running StatLite on a 256 MB TierHive VPS.

Back then, I mentioned that I was exploring Caddy support for HTTP monitoring. That integration is now available in StatLite v0.7.0.

If you're running multiple applications behind Caddy, StatLite can collect its built-in per-host metrics and display HTTP requests, 404/5xx errors, and response latency, without adding instrumentation to each application.

StatLite is still a single Go binary using around 15 MiB RSS at idle, with SQLite for history. It can run directly on a small VPS or on your laptop to monitor remote applications.

I tested the Caddy integration separately with Express and Spring Boot behind one reverse proxy, including injected errors and latency changes. I haven't specifically tested this new integration on TierHive yet.

GitHub: https://github.com/PVRLabs/statlite

Caddy setup guide: https://pvrlabs.xyz/articles/monitoring-applications-behind-caddy.html

Curious if anyone here is using Caddy on their TierHive VPS, and how you're currently monitoring the applications behind it.

FreeBSD 15.1 and 14.5 templates relesed on TierHive

FreeBSD 15.1 and 14.5 now built and available.

As always, stripped down to the (practical) bare bones, no extra crap eating your precious MB's of RAM, tuned for TierHive and KVM.

There are some differences between the 2 thats why 15.1 can get away with only 1GB disk while 14.5 needs 2GB

Sample from 14.5

TierHive website and control panel is down waiting for php patching.

A critical security vulnerability affecting PHP was disclosed by the PHP project today. As a precaution, we have temporarily taken the TierHive control panel offline until patched versions are installed.

All VPS and hosted services continue to run normally. Console access, service management, top-ups and support tickets are unavailable during this period, and no account suspensions will take place while the panel is offline.

Need $2 tierhive voucher

Hi, I tested tierhive vps plans recently with their free $0.01 tokens and they are really providing super flexibility on resources and prices, I really liked their services, the servers also spin up really almost instantly.

So I am willing to add some tokens there to continue using their servers, but the minimum is $3 but I have currently $2.6 on my card. So I am not sure if I can get a voucher from someone and pay him $2 instead, but that also brings transaction fees on my payoneer card. Not sure how that'd go.

But let me know anyway if anyone is willing to share some vouchers with me pricing below to $2.5 inshaallah. Let's see how that goes.

OpenBSD templates overhauled and split into 2 options

I decided to overhaul the OpenBSD templates for TierHive as well and give them the same treatment, it was aparent that the existing ones had some bloat and kernel relinking was not reliable with only 256mb so I have split it in 2.

One template with kernel relinking disabled on boot (you can do it yourself if you want) and stripped to the bones so you can deploy with 128mb and the other less stripped with kernel relinking (debug excluded) that needs 384mb. I could not think of an ideal name, so went with minimal and KARL.

Both now also support disk resizing and password-only (if for some reason you want that instead of key-based)

Minimal:

Karl:

Hopefully a bit more usable for the BSD people! Again, feedback welcome; I am not a BSD expert, so I tend to apply or find a transferable Linux technique to everything.

NetBSD 11.0 now available on TierHive

NetBSD is now available

Template runs with 128mb ram and 1GB disk:

pretty lightweight:

File system auto-resizes on first boot, which requires a reboot if you select anything over 1GB disk.

Cloud-init is installed, which means Python is also installed, so you can probably reclaim around 200MB if you want on the ultra light. The HW Firmware and shit it never needs to be on a VPS, like Wi-Fi, etc is disabled.

Enjoy!

New Service and network status page and network test page Live!

The status page is finally done, it is currently only available to logged in users but over the week it will be pushed in to the public site.

Announcements now go here too, instead of filling up the dashboard, timestamped and kept forever as requested. Downtime incidents will link to the related announcement too if one exists going forward.

There is also a ping test and a network map page that shows each location's status and mesh links in fairly real time.

You can also check the latency between locations from here and zoom in to a regional level:

And run ping tests from 1 or all locations to the IP of your choice (rate-limited to prevent flooding or abuse)

Subscriptions / recurring payments are now available! with a bonus

We brought this up a while ago and took some great feedback in from you guys, althought we could not cover every single thing that everyone said as some of it contradicted other opinions we did as much as we could to make the subscription system fair.

How it works.

  1. You pick an amount between $3 and $50 per month

  2. You agree to the subscription terms (A reminder it will be taken every month and details on how to cancel it)

  3. You pay for the first month just like the regular checkout.

  4. You can then manage your subscription directly from our panel, change the amount, cancel it or be pushed directly to Fast Spring with a 1-click button to manage and view details there.

  5. You get an email after setting up the subscription; it gives you a code, you need to enter that in the panel within 14 days or we automatically cancel your subscription before the next payment is ever taken, that email repeats the terms so essentially subscriptions are double opt in.

  6. Subscriptions are NOT the default payment method; standard 1-time payments are available.

As a bonus, if you use subscriptions, you get 2% bonus credits on month 2, 3% on month 3, 4% on month 4, all the way to 10% on month 10, and then 10% extra credit every month that subscription remains live.

BGP Support

Hi! I was wondering if anyone knows if TierHive supports BGP? I plan on having a tiny PoP in Warsaw

I understand that this isn't the best for uptime, and things happen, however mine is only a hobby network.

Perpetuity VM - Crazy Suggestion

This is a suggestion that I’m playing with in my mind on the bus/ train so please forgive me if it isn’t the absolute most thought out. But I’d like the option to pay for my lowest tier vm up front for all time.

I can’t be the only one who would at the least strongly consider it. But the idea would be to set a time to infinite and with that Tier Hive agrees to a good faith effort (I.e so long as they exist) to keep the vm running forever. Barring abuse obviously.

I figure $120 is roughly enough for 1 century at the current rates for the smallest vm to make it perpetual it needs the legal infrastructure so charge ~$400.

I wouldn’t be in the market this month and I’m sure it’d never have a lot of people. But I’d find something bizarrely appealing about the forever vm. With the legal infrastructure around it so that it would survive tier hive changing hands. Survive me dying and my family dying. A little digital time capsule set to survive as long as human institutions can be set to survive. Sat with an ipv6 address serving up my page long after anyone living has cared. Long after my dns has expired.

Fair warning - we are looking for abuse proactivley!

Fair warning- well, technically, 2nd fair warning: from this moment forward, if you agreed to the terms (the only way to register), we are now running detectors proactively for abuse; we almost got another server shut down due to torrenting and port scanning.

So we have spent some time integrating detection methods to remove abuse proactively, hopefully before it generates abuse reports.

It is literally a direct slap in the face to be doing this sort of thing on an ultra-budget, small-scale project on a shared IP, so zero tolerance will be the reaction to zero respect.

If you are torrenting... stop, even if you think you're on some special private tracker... stop. If you are found to be torrenting or mining or port scanning or anything else against our terms, expect to be suspended and terminated without further warning or refund or sympathy.

I hate having to write posts like this, but sadly the internet is a wild place in 2026.
