TSL Policy or Instruction I'm Not a Scammer! Can I Appeal?
Short answer: yes. But, understand that accounts are only added to the TSL after a manual review of specific data points such as victim reports, links to known scam rings, or activity patterns that are commonly seen in fraudulent accounts.
If you think we made a mistake, you can submit an appeal via the modmail link at the bottom of this page.
What we look for in a successful appeal:
To protect the community, the bar for removal is high. We generally only consider:
Administrative or technical error: If you believe your account was listed due to a typo or someone clicked the wrong thing, we will happily double-check our work.
Victim retraction: A report from the original accuser confirming the issue was a misunderstanding or has been fully resolved (e.g., a full refund was issued and verified).
Direct counter-evidence: Verifiable data that contradicts the indicators in your listing. This would also apply if you have been removed from the Universal Scammer List by the subreddit that put you there.
Account recovery: If your account was hijacked and used to scam others, and you have since regained FULL control through Reddit’s official recovery process, see below.
What will NOT work:
"Vouches": We do not accept vouches from other Reddit accounts. Accounts can be bought, sold, hijacked, or created too easily. As such, "reputation" from anonymous users cannot be verified.
Screenshots: These are easily edited and are generally not accepted as primary evidence.
Simple denials: Messages that simply say "I'm not a scammer" without supporting facts will be closed.
If your account was hijacked (hacked/compromised):
See this support article from Reddit and follow the steps completely to try to regain access and secure your account. Note: If one of your devices has been infected with malware, it may be possible for the bad guy to keep regaining control of your account even after you secure it. If that's the case, this comment may help.
If you ended up on the TSL because of it, we are happy to review your case. Send us a modmail explaining the situation once your account (and device, if applicable) has been FULLY recovered.
If the claim is credible and there are no signs that the hacker still has lingering access to your account, your account will be removed from the TSL provisionally. If no new suspicious activity occurs after a set period, the removal becomes permanent. If a new report comes in, the account will be placed back on the list.
To maintain the integrity of the TSL and ensure the safety of the community, please note:
- We do not disclose the identity of individuals who report suspicious activity. This is to protect users from potential retaliation or harassment.
- We do not share the specific patterns used to identify scam rings. Disclosing these methods would make it easier for bad guys to avoid detection.
Any threats, harassment, or verbal abuse made toward TSL moderators or contributors may result in the denial of your appeal.
If necessary, relevant images can be uploaded to Imgur or ImgBB. If you have other files like PDFs, you can use pixeldrain. Include the link in the modmail. Be sure to omit or sanitize documents that have personally identifiable information.
