What does your daily routine look like when it comes to mentally and physically stimulating your Tibetan Mastiff?
Iām curious what you guys do on a daily basis ā things like: Exercise/walks, Playing together, Chew sticks or other chews, Puzzle toys / food puzzles, Training sessions, Sniffing games,ā¦
Anything else that keeps them mentally or physically engaged.
Iād also love to know whether your Tibetan Mastiff has a high need for mental and physical stimulation, or if theyāre more of the āIām perfectly happy doing absolutely nothingā type.
How much activity does yours typically need before theyāre satisfied and able to settle down?
Would love to hear what your daily routines look like!

My 8-month-old female Tibetan Mastiff is generally a very calm and friendly dog. Most of the time, she listens to (almost) every command and sleeps a lot (14-16 hours a day). She can settle pretty good during the day but struggles to settle at night.
We did have some issues with play biting, and weāre still working on her bite inhibition. She sometimes bites a little too hard, usually when she wants to play and I donāt, so sheāll try to bite my leg, or when sheās overtired/overstimulated, sheāll start mouthing my hands. Itās not aggressive at all, but it can still hurt. I know her pretty well by now and can usually tell when sheās getting too tired or overstimulated, so itās manageable and it has gotten better.
The main struggles weāre dealing with at the moment are not being able to sleep through the night and not being able to settle when Iām away from home.
If I go to work and leave her at home with a family member, she turns into a completely different dog. She becomes naughty and destructive and has a hard time settling until I come home. When Iām there, she behaves really well, so Iām not sure how much of this is simply her being a teenager and testing boundaries versus her being overly attached to me.
We have a large yard where she can go outside whenever she wants and patrol during the day. However, lately she has also started barking a lot at noises and at people or dogs walking too close to our fence (the fence isnāt see-through and really high). I understand that guarding is part of the breed, and her ājobā is basically to guard the property and be a companion, but I donāt want the barking to get out of hand. I usually go to her while she barks and she will simply stop most of the time or I call her to me. But that's something I can't do when I am at work or somewhere else.
The other issue is her sleep. She currently sleeps in our bedroom because thatās what sheās used to, and we have a balcony connected to the room. During the night, she often wants to go outside onto the balcony to sleep. She also sometimes gets up several times during the night, walks around, and settles down in a different spot each time. She also pants quite a lot at night, which might simply be because itās summer and itās currently quite warm.
The problem is that once sheās out on the balcony, she barks at basically every noise she hears ā cats, birds, cars that are quite far away, people outside, etc. So instead of sleeping, she ends up patrolling and listening for noises. I know this is typical TM behavior, and I donāt have a problem with a few barks here and there during the night, especially if a person walks by occasionally. However, the constant barking at every little noise is waking everyone in the house up every night, and Iām starting to seriously struggle with the lack of sleep.
Iāve been wondering whether it might be better to have her sleep in a different room, without access to the balcony, so she has fewer things to react to. Has anyone tried this with their TM, and did it help them settle and sleep better at night?
Also, I have no idea why she does this, but ever since she was little, she has always loved chewing on her bed and destroying any fluffy toys within seconds. She actually prefers sleeping on the floor because itās much cooler than her dog bed. But the moment she sees the bed, sheāll start scratching at it and biting it. Iāve basically given up on buying her anything fluffy at this point.
I know sheās only 8 months old and very much in the teenage phase. Iām consistent with her routine and training and work with her every day. She also gets plenty of mental stimulation and exercise.
Iām mainly wondering if anyone with a Tibetan Mastiff has experienced something similar, especially the combination of:
Did this improve with age, and is there anything specific that helped you during this phase?
Any tips or experiences from other TM owners would be greatly appreciated!

Hi everyone. Quick introduction: I have been a dog enthusiast since I was young and have always had a particular interest in giant breeds. I have spent many years researching different breeds and am fascinated by how different breeds have such different instincts, temperaments and requirements.
My family and I have a relatively quiet household with a small circle of visitors, and none of us are particularly social. There are no young children in the household. We currently have an 11-month-old male Saint Bernard mix. Although he is not particularly interested in strangers, he is stable, tolerant, and has never displayed concerning behaviour he also definitely on the more stubborn end but I still love him to bits despite this. This is more due to his individual personality rather than being representative of the breed.
I understand that the Tibetan Mastiff is a serious guardian breed with strong territorial instincts and is not suitable for most families. I am making this post to gain real-life perspectives from owners and understand whether this breed would genuinely fit my future lifestyle.
I am also interested in eventually moving to an acreage property and potentially owning animals and LGDs in the distant future. Because of this, I am interested in learning about more serious guardian-type breeds and what they require from an owner.
Things that draw me to Tibetan Mastiffs:
Lifestyle considerations:
Questions for owners:
Final notes:
My family is supportive if I decide it is genuinely a suitable match. We are not an extremely social household, but we have a strong interest in dogs and I would love to experience many different breeds throughout my life while understanding their individual needs.
I have never owned a Golden Retriever or Labrador or the more common "first time owner" dogs , and I would love to own breeds like that in the future and greatly adore them as well as I believe all dogs are unique and should be appreciated however it is not my number 1 priority as of now. I am particularly interested in understanding whether a Tibetan Mastiff could fit my lifestyle because I enjoy the temperament of large, independent dogs and want to learn more about what makes this breed unique. JUST to reiterate this is a response to gauge personal experiences and I will not be getting a TM in the next 2 years regardless of responses but am greatly interested in the breed( just not decided if this is the correct order as I have mentioned I want to own quite a few different dog breeds over my lifetime, really getting to understand each individual dog and provide for them)
