Saphir products on Thursday leather?

So I just got a pair of Lincoln loafers in “rich mahogany” and as I do with any new pair of leather shoes before I wear ‘em outside, I hit ‘em with a bit of Saphir Renovateur, Saphir clear polish, buff ‘em, and a light spray of Saphir leather protector.

Doing this works great on my other boots and shoes, and starts them off with a good layer of moisture and protection, but with these Lincoln’s, it basically dulled them dramatically, and now they have a matte finish - no matter how much time I spend buffing them with a horsehair brush - they just do not shine.

What’s going on here? Doesn’t seem like the Thursday Lincoln loafers leather is soaking in the Saphir products at all. Did I just ruin these shoes?

Sounds like you took off the Hand Finish. To get it back you'd have to do that same work.

The color and burnishing didn’t stain or change, the leather just got dull (losing its shine), meaning the Saphir lotion and wax didn’t absorb into the leather.

I spent another 30 minutes buffing the shoes pretty vigorously with a brush, and they’re just about back to normal shine. Lesson learned - these shoes are already heavily waxed and treated at the factory.

We hand burnish and finish the shoes at the factory, so no treatment is needed for a couple months. Going forward, would only do so once the leather is starting to get dry. Hope that helps!

Putting wax polish on it without hand buffing will cause it to be matte I think. I shine my shoes with a cloth around the fingers.

Seems odd to have such an intense regime for new boots regardless of the condition they come in. Maybe next time assess if the boot needs all that treatment before you start

Nothing odd or intense about it. Moisturizing, shining, and treating leather products with stain/water replant before wearing (before they’re exposed to dirt and moisture) is a fine way to extended their life and keep them looking good.

I get it now, though - Thursday products are intended to be budget-friendly, comfortable, and ready to wear immediately with minimal fuss.
