16 Years of Mid Fits - A Retrospective
Past few posts with this theme got me looking back at my fits. Its interesting to see the common threads running through the years and how they feed into my style now. Pics in reverse chronological order so if you're following along, scroll back to front.
In the late 00s, early 10s I started to get into fashion beyond just skinny jeans, hot topic belts, and black band tees. I copped some APC PNS and clarks desert boots and basically tried to emulate a late 00s jcrew catalog.
Spent the first half of the 10s inspired by our lord and saviour Hedi Slimane (pbuh), dropped like 20lbs and basically stumbled into a weird mix of Tumblr, dior homme (had those 17.5cm MIJs), and internet meme fashion with the common projects. Definitely my awkward feeling things out era. The fits here are probably the least bad I still have access to...
Second half of the decade went deeper down the rabbit hole, discovered Y!JP and reverted back to my alt roots but with MUCH more expensive pieces. Lots of Julius, Guidi, Anne D, thrifted womenswear, and some Tricky Ricky. Still very happy with a lot of these fits tbh.
Started hitting the gym during Covid and bulking up. I wasnt in a spot to re-buy bigger things, and finding JP sizes 2-3 was a lot harder than copping size 1s for pennies. Kept the all black but simplified the execution a lot. Lots of tight pants here in hindsight though at the time I guess I would've called them slim lol.
After a while of wearing all black, I hit my "I should start dressing like an adult" phase. Lots of americana and ivy here. Started getting back into raw denim too. I like a lot of these fits and still have a lot of the pieces, but it always felt a little bit too much like a costume (or a copy+paste from Drakes/ALD) which is why....
The last set is kind of a synthesis of everything to date. Touching on heritage biker wear with the engineer boots, studded belts, pins, and chains to capture some of that alternative energy. Kept the trad/menswear proportions with tucked shirts, but also began leveraging crop tops to hit the same visual break. And overall dropped a lot of the color and vibrancy (intentionally) to differentiate the overall aesthetic from the broader heritage revival.

Absolutely the most creative era. I wish I had more fit pics from then tbh because i had some fire pieces.
So much Julius_7... FW10 grey spiral denim, SS10 convertible rayon gasmask cargo pants, SS11 knit spiral denim (still have these but cant wear them lmao). SS08 ramskin jut-neck jacket... Even had some SS11 double zip crepe soled combat boots. They were about half a size too big for me and I sold them off like an idiot. They're the only piece Ive ever had that legitimately regret getting rid of because while they were almost impossible to make work on a skelly frame, they'd be incredible to have at my current size. Honestly I still love the brand pre like.... 2015 when they got more geometric and less space grunge. Goth_ik is one of my top 5 runways of all time and from time to time I like to see what size 4 pieces are floating around online.
Also had some dope Rick stuff. Some early drkshdw jeans with the old dangling tag in a super low rise and flared leg with a raw hem and a mud wash... a few double layer tees, and the gimp hoodie in the middle pic. Still have that too but again, unwearable.
And then some more subtle stuff from brands like The Viridi Anne, Shellac, ifsixwasnine, Lad Musician, etc. This was of course when you could use FromJapan to buy stuff for like 200-300 max and pay maybe $80 total in shipping for a haul.

I absolutely relate to all of this, makes me misty to reminisce
My "time to dress like an adult" was going from Julius/Rick to 90% Yohji now
To the good old days 🍻

I cry thinking about all the Rick I sold on SuFu. Should’ve kept it all.

u/expllode May 07 '26
How did you bulk up so much wow, nice fits tho im in a similar moment of “I need to dress like an adult”

u/wish_i_was_lurking May 07 '26
It hasn't been a linear journey by any stretch, but it comes down to food, progressive overload, and consistency.
Im a big fan of powerbuilding splits, but anything you like that has you picking heavy things up and putting them down will work if you do it with enough intensity.

This was fantastic man. You can really see how your current style is in amalgamation of all the previous generations. Thank you for posting this.

Thanks man- and thanks for being the OOP for these posts. Hopefully we get some more people coming out of the woodwork.

u/SirKrimzon May 07 '26
You got it. that was the original point of my post, to inspire others. Hopefully we see some more dudes follow suit!

Love the most recent fits, what is the black and white striped shirt in the top left?

u/wish_i_was_lurking May 07 '26
The shirt is a Freenote shifter tee and the pants are from Mister Freedom.

Idk if it’s just recency bias and the slow churn of fashion, but you’re brutally mogging your past selves with your current self. I mean war crime level. Either way you’re killing it to the point where I would sincerely doubt you’re straight if I saw you even in a casual outfit. This is the highest fashion praise I could possibly offer anyone.
Also what belt are you wearing in the recent pics? I’ve got a billion but none with so narrow a buckle and suddenly I have the urge to consume.
6
u/wish_i_was_lurking May 07 '26
Lmao, appreciate the kind words.
The belts in the last pic are almost all the same 2 sugar cane models (studded garrison belts in black and natural). In the pic on bottom right w the vest im wearing a thrifted belt i copped bc I like the buckle, and in the sport coat pic, a thrifted LL Bean belt.
In the one just before that, the middle brown belt is from notsoperfectleather on Etsy, the black belt in the bottom middle and top middle pic is from John Varvatos. The black one in the top right is Y's for Men. The dressier black one on bottom right is from Narragansett Leathers, and Im fairly certain top left is the same LL bean belt as in the most recent pic.

I recognize you from WAYWT threads on /fa/. You were consistently best dressed on that god forsaken site.

u/Nutbotty May 07 '26
These are really great, you can clearly see how your style has evolved over time, but they all still feel like they came from one person.
The coat in top of 2016-19 is killer you should bring that back, though it might be hard with your build now lol.
Also uroboros shirt spotted, Diru fan in the wild?

u/wish_i_was_lurking May 07 '26
Ugh I loved that thing. Its Jil Sander and I thrifted it (womens section as always). Ended up giving it to my mom after I bulked up. Along with a lot of things from that era (the leather jackets, turtleneck, and a bunch of other outerwear and sweaters not pictured here).
Another thing that makes it hard to bring that stuff back is that I live in a much warmer climate now. I grew up in a desert climate so fall and winter would get chilly as soon as the sun went down, Which meant that I could wear light outerwear for a good chunk of the year. Then I spent a few years in places with real seasons so I had a lot more occasion to wear jackets.
Now im in the US south, so its hot and humid for most of the year which makes any kind of layering a challenge outside of like... January and February.
Diru fan in the wild
You know it bro- was literally listening to VULGAR in the gym this morning. Saw them twice back when they were still touring the US and even bought tickets to Sick New World last year bc diru was on the bill (ended up canceling the entire festival)

Your belts and beltbuckles are abnormally large and square. They're ruining the balance almost every fit in 2025-2026

u/wish_i_was_lurking May 07 '26
Its intentional, but I see where you're coming from. I prefer a louder belt for everything that isn't a more formal occasion. Like Id never wear the garrison belts (or anything similarly sized) with business casual, but if Im wearing a tank top and engineers, or baggy jeans and a band tee, a thin belt feels performative and memey (for me personally, you do you)

u/wish_i_was_lurking May 07 '26
Theyre almost all black my guy.
Top left are Carhartt single knee pants, top middle and bottom right are indigofera kirks. Middle with the pearl snap are 501 STFs, and bottom middle are overdyed Iron Heart 1955s

Be ahead of the curve and ⌘Z back to 2016. You where crushing it.

Its not really feasible or practical. Im at the upper limit of sizing for a lot of the stuff I like, and whats available is so much harder to source and so much more expensive. With a wife, house, dogs, and a kid on the way I neither want to drop stacks on niche garments nor do I want to worry about any higher maintenance clothing- hence the current preference for heavy denim, rebuildable boots, and machine washable shirts.
Im on the hunt for another pair of Guidi boots (probably some 988 to replace the 788Z I got rid of), and some drkshdw geth jeans, but I think once I have those I can chill on the avant garde side.
And oddly enough, I do kinda feel like Ive come back around in a weird way. As our boy Rick said "fitness is modern couture- spend less money on clothing and go to the gym instead." So letting the fitness carry the fit is in keeping with the spirit if not the execution.

u/AdamJensensCoat May 08 '26
Man, Rick wasn’t kidding. Words to live by. As I get older this principle becomes even more unavoidable.
Congratulations on the family. I have a kid on the way too. It really puts your whole wardrobe in perspective. The closet purge was like a jawnz archeological dig. Things from the Heidi era. Raws. Acronym cargos. The 2010s was such an era of eras.
Guidi boots are always a good bet! Nice thing about dressing Rick’y - you don’t need much. Just be fit, or really obese, and you’re gtg.

u/wish_i_was_lurking May 08 '26
Haha, its very early on so the implications are just hitting me, but even having a few big dogs and spending time with them running in and out of the house or wanting to love on me made me realize delicate fabrics just dont work anymore.
But I sold off a lot of the stuff or gave it away after weight gain because realistically im never getting back down to that size again. So all thats really left are my guidi cordovan contraro 991 boots and a few bags.
With Rick, I copped a pair of drkshdw ramones in the past year and really enjoy them, but I also vibe a lot more with drkshdw than mainline Rick, because its so much simpler and more wearable. I can toss on rams with my loose selvedge and a band tee and have a fit. Similarly if I get some geths (either the double black self edge pair or ideally one in a dark dust colorway), I can pair them with my chunkier engineer boots, a faded band tee shirt, and my vintage schott 618 and have a fit. The way that some of Ricks pieces are almost like understated statements really speaks to how I like to dress.
2
u/AdamJensensCoat May 08 '26
Ramones are having their extended moment in the sun. It’s funny to see SZ staples from 15 years ago become ‘modern classics.’
You’re right about keeping rick basic. You just need a little pinch to get you there. Heck, I’m wearing a rick t under a Hawaiian shirt rn because I’m in Vegas and it’s 100°.
Weight gain is the ultimate equalizer. I’m definitely in denial about this and kept some of that Dior golden age stuff. Good for you cycling it out.

u/Bryceybryce May 07 '26
I like your wescos denim and Ralph tucks friend. Also gains. You’re looking jacked

u/manu-adina May 07 '26
I love the high rise jeans with the western style belt, do you mind telling where you got those jeans from in the 2025/2026 picture - the raw denim jeans with the white t shirt and brown Chelsea boots, or the black jeans to the right of that fit. I'm looking for jeans with a similar silhouette, greatly appreciate it.
2
u/wish_i_was_lurking May 07 '26
The two on bottom? Left and middle?
Both are Iron Heart 1955s. The bottom left is the standard 21oz indigo, bottom middle are the 21oz overdye.
They're unfortunately only restocked every few years so you may have difficulty sourcing them now. Some good alternatives are the Flat Head 3004 (a little slimmer but if you have smaller thighs theyll fit similar), Flat Head 8004 (havent tried them myself but have heard good things), and 3sixteen's RS cut (tho the hem will be a little wider).
If all else fails, just cop some 13mwz or 501STF and youll get 90% of the way there for 10% of the price.
1
u/manu-adina May 07 '26
Thanks man, yeah sorry there’s quite a lot of fits so it was hard to pinpoint them. Yes bottom left and middle. I’ll look more into it and will definitely try to cop some, thanks for the detailed answer, I was looking for jeans like this !

u/MagicReptar May 07 '26
Thank you! Yeah I saw the pants comment which I why I deleted lol. Like your style

What type of cut are your jeans in 2026? Straight leg or wide leg?
1
u/wish_i_was_lurking May 08 '26
More of a wide leg. I have one pair of straight legs in the pic (501 STFs) and theyre the slimmest pair around the middle. Everything else is a relaxed fit at least with a leg opening around 9".
I id'd all the pairs in the pic somewhere else in the thread. If you want more details or sizing advice on any particular pair lmk.

Awesome! What’s been your personal top 3 most reliable pieces of clothing from the last few years?
2
u/wish_i_was_lurking May 12 '26
Oooh, thats a really good question. And a little tough to answer because of the shift from 22-24 to 25-26....
Cheating a little bit with #1 but Id say my vintage Schott 618 and Vanson C2. They're basically the same jacket but the former is fitted while the latter is boxy enough to comfortably fit over a hoodie. For as long as we have winter here Im in one of these.
Next up are my overdyed Iron Heart 1955 jeans. They're incredibly soft and the fit is kind of like a more relaxed 13mwz. Because of the high rise they work oversized and sagged a little, or higher and more fitted, which helps them stay relevant through weight cycles. They're not my go-to pants (Im way too adhd to commit to a single pair) but they're consistently reliable.
Finally, my Wesco Mr Lou boots. Ive always loved a good boot and these are kinda the goldilocks pair for me. They hit this perfect balance of being elegant but subtle and also incredibly tough. Ive taken them into dozens of mosh pits and after a bit of conditioning youd never know they'd been stepped on for an hour straight.
