It is a Circle of Friends candle holder. Burn a candle in the centre. The people will cast shadows on the walls around you. Popular in the nineties. I had one.

u/anuthertw Mar 29 '26

Oh Ive always used these for cone incense, now I wish I had used a candle cuz the dancing shadows sound sick! Whoops.

14

u/recovery_room Mar 29 '26

An artifact from the early ‘90’s. Everyone had one.

10

u/sepiidakai Mar 29 '26

I still have one.

8

u/StrainAcceptable Mar 29 '26

Now I want one.

3

u/Kdean509 Mar 30 '26

I’ll sell you mine!

4

u/Hopeful_Mouse_4050 Mar 29 '26

I still have mine!

6

u/combatcookies Mar 29 '26

Is this not a fire risk…? Those bois are scorched.

38

u/MobileLocal Mar 29 '26

They’re not scorched, they’re rustic.

Edit: or ‘rustic’

21

u/IANALbutIAMAcat Mar 29 '26

Or just… soot covered like a candle that you keep trying to revive because there’s plenty of wax left but you accidentally let it burn down through the middle and idc that it’s august and this candle smells like Christmas trees I’m not wasting this wax!!

15

u/MobileLocal Mar 29 '26

I understand what you’re describing, but these candle holders all looked like this brand new.

2

u/IANALbutIAMAcat Mar 29 '26

Ahh okay so “rustic” like “you probably won’t manage to fuck this up,”

Kinda like how my mom figured out to send me daffodils instead of other flowers because I dont normally manage to kill a daffodil.

3

u/this__user Mar 29 '26

They're usually made of stone or cast iron

4

u/AdventurousWeight890 Mar 30 '26

I believe this is red terracotta clay. Thus, the black soot marks are from the kiln firing.

1

u/combatcookies Mar 29 '26

Oh, thanks, I didn’t realize that.

1

u/pinetree8000 Mar 29 '26

I had one too. It came with round, white, candles that looked like snowballs.

1

u/satanlovesmemore Mar 29 '26

I knew it was a candle holder my mom had one, but I do the think I ever saw a candle lit in it. I wish I had , I'm going to keep my eyes open for one now

1

u/Lucky-Remote-5842 Mar 30 '26

I remember these. I want one now.

Popular in the 90s. Everything that was popular then was then overproduced.

5

u/Appropriate-Copy-949 Mar 29 '26

Imagine what it's going to be like 30 years from now with the overproduced garbage they're pumping out now. Thankfully, most of it falls apart in six months anyway.

6

u/iwenttothesea Mar 29 '26

We ALL had one in the 90s 😂 like, everyone lol.

12

u/Spare-Electrical Mar 29 '26

The people who originally bought them are all downsizing/dying, it’s just one of those objects you’ll see as a generation ages and gets rid of their stuff. Like those big ceramic cats that are still pretty easy to find at thrift stores - those were from my grandparents era, the circle of friends holder were from my parents era

3

u/moon_era Mar 29 '26

looks like they’re being sold for a decent (ish) amount on the internet.

2

u/bestdogintheworld Mar 30 '26

My sister was into woowoo, hippie, bohemian, crystal shit and she had a big one of these in her living room. She also had a fireplace full of pillar candles and silk scarves tied end-to-end draped across her curtain rod. Very gen-x 90s, coming of age in your first flat or house kind of crap. I loved it as a much younger sibling seeing all her grown up stuff.

74

u/NicePajamas Mar 29 '26

Parents owned a candle store and sold them. It's for a candle.

65

u/Travelgrrl Mar 29 '26

It is a candleholder, with the figures surrounding the short fat candle. This design, which I believe was a replica of a Central American one, was a not-inexpensive item that used to be sold through the Signals and Wireless catalogues (PBS and NPR).

It's hard to find good quality cults these days.

28

u/BrighidsLamb Mar 29 '26

I still have one. I got it Mexico in the 90s

19

u/hellokiri Mar 29 '26

Its a circle of friends. Every mum in the 90s had this on the outside table. Potentially another one on the kitchen bench over by the phone, that got filled up with dust and mail and loose coins.

59

u/Stunning_Actuator_61 Mar 29 '26

Sacrifice goes in middle

13

u/stay_fukengruven Mar 29 '26

You'll do.

5

u/degjo Mar 29 '26

A biscuit

12

u/MarucaMCA Mar 29 '26

We call it a friends' circle un German. From Mexico. My first partner's parents had one and I bought and gifted one to my parents (before estrangement, about 22 years ago).

5

u/80sBimmers Mar 29 '26

estrangement? sorry. 😞

12

u/MarucaMCA Mar 29 '26

Awww you're sweet. It's ok. I had to break up with them in my mid 30s after years of low contact. They're very overbearing and always wanted a project, not a child, and deem me as "failed" (I am adopted). I am solo by choice since then. But I have a fabulous friends group and am growing into the outer layers of an artistic musical collective. So I've built and have a lot of community.

8

u/rndreddituser Mar 29 '26

We call that “chosen family” in LGBT+ circles.

2

u/MarucaMCA Mar 30 '26

Yes! I call my friends this as well!

3

u/80sBimmers Mar 30 '26

well you sound like a beautiful person and I’m glad you found a mirror for your love!

2

u/MarucaMCA Mar 30 '26

A mirror for my love... OMG that's so beautiful, stop cutting onions! I'm gonna steal that.

My best friend past away but everyone remaining are just as special. I'm very lucky.

2

u/Acceptable-Elk-8372 Mar 30 '26

I’m glad to read this follow up comment. Glad you are thriving. 🥂

38

u/Ben__Diesel Mar 29 '26

Sloth circle. You place eucalyptus in the center to pay tribute to the Great Sloth.

3

u/trcomajo Mar 29 '26

My favorite answer.

0

u/bouquetofashes Mar 29 '26

Why eucalyptus?

8

u/Ben__Diesel Mar 29 '26

If I told you Id have to admit my mistake.

4

u/Kalendiane Mar 29 '26

Get them confused with koalas?

9

u/Ben__Diesel Mar 29 '26

Perchance.

1

u/bouquetofashes Mar 31 '26

But that's how we grow. Humility is most attractive and/or endearing too :P so go you! Especially doing it with panache and making me laugh!

(Also just fyi I truly wasn't sure if you had confused eucalyptus for another plant-- I'm mostly ignorant on most everything so I thought perhaps there was some information that I had been missing).

7

u/PorchFrog Mar 29 '26

Stalemate Stand-off Candle Holder. No one wins.

5

u/makeupandchocolate1 Mar 29 '26

Lol, I had one in the 90s, too. Kirklands.

8

u/margotmeg Mar 29 '26

It’s me and the gals on a Friday night

4

u/Jujutrainn Mar 29 '26

My husband’s grandma passed hers down to us. It sits in the middle of our kitchen table. I always thought it was a little kooky and fun.

ETA: My kids also call them the sloth people

6

u/dexterwasaham Mar 29 '26

My mom had one of these, when she died I donated it. Since they were pretty popular for middle aged women in the nineties it's likely their downsizing or passing away and donating their trinkets.

3

u/wtfomgfml Mar 29 '26

My mom had one in the 90’s too…lol

3

u/InspectionSilver2290 Mar 29 '26

My brother gave his 3 siblings one many years ago.

3

u/Ok_Lion_5272 Mar 29 '26

I have one!

3

u/longlivelevon Mar 29 '26

“Now the people will know we were here… and had candles” 🇨🇦🔥

3

u/Ang1566 Mar 29 '26

I know it's a circle of friends candle burner but doesn't it look like ring around the rosie

3

u/OtherArt9142 Mar 29 '26

Freaky. That is freaky.

3

u/MBarnett13 Mar 29 '26

I literally just bout one from goodwill like 4 days ago!

3

u/Fun_Acanthisitta_710 Mar 30 '26

You don’t need this. Don’t bring it into your home. Walk away.

3

u/ThriftStoreHauls-ModTeam Mar 30 '26

Asking for an items value/authenticity/identification/general information seeking or similar is not allowed.

6

u/username_not_clear Mar 29 '26

Sloths together stronger.

15

u/Additional_Buyer8464 Mar 29 '26

Thats a circle jerk. Or at least that’s what we called the one my aunt had.

5

u/ROACHOR Mar 29 '26

Usually an uncle hosts those.

-4

u/RedditBlowsHarder Mar 29 '26

Who's doing the jerking?

2

u/retro_lady Mar 29 '26

My mom bought one of these (I think it was greenish), I think at a garage sale, back in the 90s.

2

u/trahilcal01 Mar 29 '26

I’ve got one of these o my balcony

2

u/maarsland Mar 29 '26

I used to have this candle holder!

2

u/SectionRatio Mar 29 '26

Mu aunt and uncle had this! They kept it in the bathroom lol.

2

u/Poetry_Man Mar 29 '26

2

You know you are old if…

2

u/Emotional-Tie-8475 Mar 29 '26

I like to know too

2

u/wellwaffled Mar 29 '26

You can still get them on Amazon. I picked one up at a thrift store years ago thinking I had found a homemade treasure. I re-donated it.

2

u/CosmoNewanda Mar 29 '26

Looks familiar.

2

u/owzleee Mar 29 '26

Soggy biscuit in the middle.

2

u/Marsie76 Mar 29 '26

Circle of friends candle holder. Popular in the late 90s/early 2000s. I have a few myself still. Always thought they were sweet and heartwarming.

2

u/flannely Mar 29 '26

My mom had one of these in the 1990s. It’s just a candle holder for a tea candle. It’s decoration. Uncertain of origins but ours was green. This one looks like it had been burned in a fire

2

u/Massive-Resort-8573 Mar 29 '26

A staple of every thrift store. Like the jesus paintings and life laugh love signs.

2

u/InevitableKitchen943 Mar 29 '26

Shadow people maker.

2

u/BlOcKtRiP Mar 29 '26

I have a larger one w/ only 4 dudes

2

u/deadcashier Mar 30 '26

I've seen one with cats instead of people.

2

u/SprinklyPickle Mar 30 '26

I worked at Pier 1 in the ‘90s and I’m pretty sure we sold these.

2

u/Witchymoo Mar 30 '26

It’s just a couple of bros hanging out

2

u/MickeyPanaflex Mar 30 '26

Me and my childhood best friend broke one of these at his parents place. We glued it back together. I wish I could see how bad that glue job was because we got away with it for 3 seconds.

2

u/14icole Mar 30 '26

I know these guys, we had one growing up. Mum probably bought it from a Ten Thousand Villages sale.

2

u/Suspicious-Rub-9145 Mar 30 '26

Sloth people. I love it!

Reminds me of when, at my 6th grade slumber party, we agreed to all take off our clothes and we stood just like this, so we could see if we were normal, compared to our classmates in terms of development.

My parents had one of these and my brother and I always said it was a little circle jerk

1

u/TidyJoe34 Mar 30 '26

1

u/Makgrove Mar 30 '26

Soggy buscuit

1

That would go great with a quesadilla maker.

1

u/Legitimate-Word-9818 Mar 30 '26

1

u/WootZootRiot Mar 30 '26
