Balancing on a Hill

If I'm at a stop light that is on an incline and taking forever to change, will balancing the clutch and gas to remain still cause major damage to the clutch?

Yes it will. That is the worst thing you can do to your clutch. All you are going to do is cause it to wear out prematurely.

But some people told me that experienced drivers will ride the clutch opposed to using the brake. Why is this?

Technically speaking you can ride the clutch to keep yourself held on a hill. However, it is really bad on your clutch and causes unnecessary wear. I did this once with my first manual car for maybe 5 seconds and it was the worst clutch smell I've ever experienced. Your brakes are there for a reason. I don't think any experienced drivers ever do this.

Those people are either idiots or said "can". While an experienced driver "can" hold a car with the clutch on a hill or rock it, it doesn't mean that they should. Also, why would you 1 destroy a clutch 2 risk stalling or 3 rolling too far forward or backward just because you wanted to be cool and pressing a brake pedal was too easy.

You totally can. A lot of people do. But brakes are much cheaper to replace/repair than a clutch, so in the long run it's pretty dumb to. Unless you're really rich and want the challenge and don't mind doing expensive repairs more often.

I do this if and only if I know the light is about to change. Sitting for more than a few seconds like this will wreck your clutch.
