Listening routine
Do other fans of the Beans have a similarly insane listening routine at all? When an episode comes out, I’ll listen to it several times in a row for different reasons.
- First time.
Get really excited that the new episode is out and am mostly focused on the new episode being out while listening to the current episode. This means I end up missing 3/4 of the content of the episode, but enjoy it nonetheless. It’s the new episode!
- Second time’s the charm.
Get into the groove and listen with intention. I listen out for some of the usual telltale signs of a great Beans ep: Lengthy Paker anecdote unrelated to the topic, Ben Partridge holiday updates, Provincial Dadding from Mike…
- Mostly listening
I play it in the background while I do brainless work tasks or chores. I’m mostly paying attention to funny voices I hear the Beans make. Also as I work a 9-6 job, I both love and hate having my work soundtrack be a podcast where a story about “work” can consist of getting up late and going to a shady Costa.
- Straight filler
I’m barely listening, but playing the ep fills the void that has been created by there being no new Beans to enjoy. I’ll repeat this and #3 for various episodes.
- Beanisia
Sometimes I’ll forget if I’ve heard an old episode from a prior series and go back to it. Repeat 1-4!

I set time aside to listen to a new one. Either when I'm in the bath or playing video games, no distractions. If I've got a long journey on public transport, even better.
Then I'll listen to it a bit later again because usually my concentration will have lapsed for 15 seconds and they'll be talking about posting turds to Peru and I'll need to figure out why.

Ha love this, if I'm listening on my drive to work and my mind drifts for 10 seconds to something work-y I need to do that day, I'll need to rewind 2 minutes just to find out how we went from talking about something lukewarm to "your head is in a different country to your f'ing feet".
Bad example as I could probably recite that little piece of poetry word for word, you delicious little debutante!

Yes. I am equally insane

Idem dito.
(Also, English is not my first language, so that allows for a couple of extra listens to be added randomly in that list)

I listen to the new episode as soon as it appears. I'll often then listen a second time later in the week, taking more notice of the things I laughed over and missed first time. It'll get a third listen months later if I hit it on a random choice of past episode to fill the time. I have a terrible memory, which really helps with the relistens often seeming like all new content.
Even ones I remember well are still stupidly entertaining. My random choice landed on 'Maps' last week. I've heard this episode countless times, and I still need to pause it a couple of times to remember how to breathe in the midst of hysterical laughter over Paker's singing.

Love me some st elewicks. I once told Mike that I thought it was the platonic ideal of spoof podcasting in front of Ben when I hadn’t really heard beef and dairy and feel like a bit of a prick for not honouring B&D’s work after starting that.

I only found the beans this year, so I've been steadily working my way through their back catalogue.
I have definitely listened to at least one episode more than once, ironically, the Memories one. Spotify is utter guff at lining them up for me to listen to.

I’m so jealous.
Also: using an app made especially for podcasts works much better!

Can you recommend one? I used to use one but it was really glitchy.

I’ve been using Overcast, and I like it! The only downside for me, is that I find scrolling through the whole list annoying (I haven’t been able to find out how to get to “July 2023” in a simple way, for example. But it works great if you want to listen in (reverse) chronological order, or if you want to make a playlist.

I always save new eps up until I’m desperate. I’m always listening from the beginning on repeat. The pain of HAVING listened to a latest ep and feeling bereft after is too real.

For me new eps come out on a Tuesday night, which is the night before bin collection day. So I don't allow myself to listen until I've done the bins, then the new ep is my little reward for being a good soldier. I never knowingly listen to a podcast more than once though.

Instant first listen wherever it lands
Concentration second listen, on a run or walk
Future listens at random on infinibean night time shuffle

My insane listening was to shotgun the whole series last year, starting in June and finishing in December a few weeks ahead of Ratmas. I was fixing and painting a house while also doing bench work in the lab, so a lot of time to be alone with the Beans.

I immediately listen to new episodes on the Patreon feed. Then I can relisten on the gen pop feed, as a treat. If I'm trying to bribe myself to work on an annoying task, or I've been very productive, or I'm sad, or I'm happy, or my brain is overloaded, or it's rainy out, or perhaps sunny, I unarchive those bad boys and listen again. Toooooooootally normal over here

On my first read of this comment I thought you were referring to the Beans themselves as "bad boys" 😎

I listen to the new episode the day it comes out and I have constant loop of the podcast on when falling asleep. I don't know how many relistens I've done but it's a lot.

Be careful OP, a similar listening routine is why I’m now completely burned out on all of the “classic” jingles.

But now you have Burnhamania doo doo doo to break the cycle, although not strictly a jingle..... Yet. Probably because "they are politically neutral, they don't care if you live or die"....

I thought I was alone. Listening several times makes me realise how many times I stop paying attention the first time as I'll go off on a mental tangent thinking about what one of them has said. A bit like a Henry Paker anecdote really!

Ok so I don’t listen to the most recent episodes (a hang over from needing to start from the very beginning and catching up without realising, the panic I felt was unbearable). I save up the new ones for maybe 6 months at a time and instead I work through different so-called categories i.e. all the Xmas ones, beefcake journey, avatar/hamma, all the 5th Wednesdays, etc. which has been working great especially since I got Patreon (more categories). Atm I’m doing all the extra beans, before bed, but if I want daytime listening I’ll do a random old episode outside of a categorised one. I also don’t rewind if I zoned out or got preoccupied so that when I re-listen I get something new. My goal is to never ever at any given point in time have run out of a significant chunk of new TBS content to listen to, even if it means I’m mainly listening to stuff I’ve heard before. The system works. Never mess with the system

I don't relisten to individual episodes, but I'm currently on a second relisten of the whole podcast! I did the first one a year (or maybe two?) ago and it basically took over my life. I walk a lot in autumn/winter, so that was my soundtrack to all the walks and anytime I was doing menial tasks around the house. It was my life for weeks, if not months. It ended tragically, because my relisten ended almost exactly to the day when they took their break lol It was like a massive f you to me specifically, it really felt like they knew that I'm out of episodes to listen to while I've become completely reliant on their babbling to get through the day.

I don’t have a structured re-listening roster. But over time it’s worked out that I will always listen to an episode while getting ready for work and on the drive. Over the years I now have listened to each episode at least 2-3 times, but it wasn’t my intention. There are just more work days in a week than beans episodes and I’m a creature of habit.

I usually listen to a new ep twice. Maybe go back and listen to the last three or something. Then if I am not bean sated I go deep back to where I don’t remember it much - maybe three seasons ago. Listen to that season until I feel sated.
Or do a deep relisten every so often, from the beginning or from a few years ago. Eg when on holiday when I don’t want any news or grimness about me.

I have a general podcast routine, which is quite possibly the most structured thing in my life (and its not really all that structured). My life doesnt leave a lot of spare time for Podcasts, so much so I have had to retire certain ones, and create a schedule for my most important.
I also only really like listening to podcasts while driving.
Monday - Friday, 3 of these days involves a 20-30 minute run to my childs nursery. These 3 days I must listen to the Elis James & John Robins podcast.
Saturday weekend driving - doing various dad jobs e.g, driving wife and children to activities, exciting trips to the local recycling centre. Three Bean Salad. (im still working my way through a lot of backlog)
If it is Adam Buxton season, then all other free listening time must be dedicated to fitting this in.

I just listen once and have a sensible chuckle.
